The Greater Demons

Dr. Aishik Routh was very quiet as he was brought to the police station. He knew this was bound to happen the first day he met his fellow tenant during breakfast. Dr. Vaibhav Roy is good at holding grudges, maybe all forensic scientists are.

Aishik laid back relaxed on the metal chair. Aishik extended his legs and tried to hold up the empty chair, trying to spin it on one support.

The door slammed open with Biraj entering the room. The chair fell with a loud thud, Aishik was sure he saw the single fluorescent bulb in the middle of the room sway.

Biraj threw a thick file on the desk and sat down with a thud, "Naitik told us about your machines, who was the buyer?"

"You know what those are!?", Aishik said looking down and fidgeting.

"Artificial rain technology", Biraj answered without blinking, "now who was...?"

"I'm a weather reporter!", Aishik put up his hands, "I was just studying the tech!"

"In a windowed...windward...", Biraj blinked twice through his words.

"Yeah", Aishik mocked, "tell him to come inside. No offence, but this is a meeting of greater minds!"

Biraj exhaled angrily as he turned to the viewing glass. Immediately the door slammed open again. Biraj stood up and Vaibhav confidently took the seat.

"Okay stop with this charade of confidence", commented Aishik, "and knowledge, both of you!"

Biraj slammed his fist into the desk, "you got me in one technicality but I'm still here! This greater mind waited outside because I asked him to. I can see your pupils shaking behind these neatly manicured hands! So answer the damn question...."

"It took me some time you know", Vaibhav began speaking, "but it is not only a cloud seeding projector, is it? We saw this lady in a storm...", Vaibhav and Biraj looked at each other.

"...and we can tell you're lying!", Biraj completed his sentence.

All colour suddenly left Aishik. As if all his hope for acknowledgment and fears of revelation all came true at once. He coughed and composed himself.

"Where can I find her?"

Aishik squinted his eyes at Vaibhav, "you try so hard to be unique!", Aishik breathed slowly, "yet you end up sounding as desperate as the people seeking the explanation of the supernatural!"

"She is not supernatural. Someone capable of atrocities, always has limits!"

"Trust me I was her ally for a long time, every attempt to describe her will only limit her magnificence!"

"I examined the machines, they're an acetone-based silver ion generator", Vaibhav got technical, "they are not fine enough to seed clouds, what'll she do with them?"

Aishik smiled at Vaibhav slowly turning to Biraj, "Gullible, isn't he? You see Dr. Roy here knows that cloud seeding tech uses fine ion particles as condensate to form clouds, but he cannot understand..."

"Answer him!", Biraj pointed Aishik to Vaibhav.

"As I told you, it was just research. I didn't know why they were building it..."

"Vaibhav told me about your conversation", Biraj stood up folding his hands.

"Yeah, it isn't polite to ask people about their ethnicity..", Aishik tried to control the conversation again.

"I don't think Dr. Roy gets sensitivity!", Biraj momentarily looked at Vaibhav, "anyway I was talking about your job in the Mirik observatory! I checked back with our local anchor, he says it's not that special...!"

"Who wants to sit around and watch something that is supposed to happen! The real fun of science is to search for the inexplicable, something that doesn't follow the pattern..."

"That is why you had to build them!", Vaibhav cut in, "she didn't need to convince you, did she!? You already created a demon, just too great to resist.....!"

"She offered me knowledge!", Aishik sounded helpless, "this is what we fight for, I couldn't just loose her!"

Vaibhav stood up, ruffling his hair, walking around the room. Aishik's gaze followed him, "...she is as close as we mortals come to say 'let there be light'. You cannot judge her on her worst impulses..."

"I've studied gods!', Vaibhav thumped the desk loudly with his palms, bending over, "gods don't run people over mountain ledges!", Vaibhav panted as he got angrier.

"How does Saikat fit into this!?", Biraj asked calmly.

"Master da!", Aishik answered, "he was our feet on the ground. At first, he was thrilled to have something that powerful on his side!"

"He didn't like it when he realised what was happening?"

"He sent Saikat to steal the machines. She pursued him that night!"

"A direct thunderbolt would have vaporized Saikat's accomplice, not give him a ground current injury!"

"You don't become a goddess by existing! She wanted Saikat to talk about her, but didn't want the police to see her, the disbelief only makes her more divine!"

Vaibhav and Biraj looked at each other making meaningless gestures at each other.

"...you haven't told anyone else yet, have you?", Aishik laid back, "you should. The lost whispers will find life again because Saikat tried, he couldn't get it all, most machines are still out there, waiting to make it rain....!"

The door slammed open for the third time, making all three of them look back. A man dressed haphazardly in a suit walked in with full vigour.

"Dr. Aishik Routh, do not speak one more word!"
