Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?

"So I told him- Ali, are you listening to a word I'm saying?"

I blinked and focused on Tamie. It was Saturday morning and I was over at Tamie's house. She had spent the whole morning talking about this boy she had met and I had spent the morning lost in thought. Ever since that last vision two days ago the song of 'The Hanging Tree' had haunted me.

James had promised me that he would do all the research he could, and so had I, but it had been two days and we had nothing. Nothing at all.

"So hey," Tamie began in a quiet voice," what's happening with you and James?"

That caught my attention alright. "Nothing, Tamie."

Tamie looked hurt. "I've heard the rumours, Ali. Everyone is talking about how they saw you walking together, holding hands, two days ago."

Ok, so that was true, but not for the reasons Tamie thought. James and I had held hands that day because of the vision I'd had just before walking back. I had been shaking and unstable, as I always was after I had a vision, so James had held my hand to guide me.

"Tamie-"

"Is it true that he held your hand?" She asked, interrupting me.

"Yes, but-"

"And why didn't you tell me?!"

Up until that moment, I had honestly been considering telling her the truth about my visions. However, her snapping and shouting gave me second thoughts about doing so.

"Tamie, we were not holding hands romantically."

"It doesn't matter! You should have still told me!"

"Why are you shouting at me?!"

"Because I deserved to know! I'm your best friend!"

I thought of how Tamie had always been the popular one, the one who had a thousand boyfriends.

My voice was filled with venom as I said, "yes, because you always tell me everything."

"Well, I'm justified as I have too much to tell."

"So you are saying that I'm boring and plain?"

"No! Is just you were with James, your crush, and well that is, well, you know-"

"Surprising? Is so surprising that a boy finally noticed me? Well, hell, he hasn't even done that! I guess I'm plain and boring after all!"

"No! Stop twisting my words!"

"Into what? The truth?!"

"You should have told me! I didn't want to hear it from someone else, I wanted to hear it from you!"

"Well, is a shame how you are never available, seeing as you are so popular and beautiful, everyone wants to hang out with you!"

"That is none of you business!"

"You keep saying we are best friends, but that statement seriously questions that!"

"We are friends!"

I hadn't missed the 'best' missing from that sentence. That one little detail, not the shouting and insulting but that little word, finally caused an incurable pain in my heart.

"You don't understand," I whispered.

"Well, guess what? I don't want to anymore!"

That did it. I got up, grabbed my bag and ran out the house. I keep running and running, even when Tamie ran out and stated calling my name, even when tears began falling from my eyes, even when my heart broke.
