Chapter 22
James's POV
Ali's sweet voice enveloped me into a sense of security. I almost forgot the meaning song's lyrics. Almost.
She began to drift off, as she usually does by that point. Then, suddenly, she blacked out and fell. I caught in my arms just before she hit the ground.
She was shaking badly. I tried to murmur words of comfort, but I doubt she could hear me.
Eventually the shaking stopped and she became still in my arms. I gently moved her so that she was resting in a more comfortable position.
A small noise came from above me. I looked up and saw a small bird. It kept moving restlessly. I stared at it until I could conjure a name for it. Oh, it was a finch.
Wait, I thought, it was a finch. A memory resurfaced. When we had been at that mansion, a bird had kept following us around. But it couldn't be the same bird. Or could it?
And what about when Ali had insisted on following the bird. Was it because it was a finch? Could it be linked with him?
It was impossible. But if you would have asked me a couple of weeks ago if people could have visions of the past and experience them as if they were actually there, I would have said it was impossible. Yet the evidence for its existence was lying in my arms.
I looked back at Ali. Then my eyes opened widely. Instead of dropping her, like my first instinct would have been, I tightened my arms around her, as my mouth dropped open in shock and horror.
Bruises covered every bit of her. Dark, swollen bruises. Underneath all of them lied Ali, pale as a ghost.
She was fine a minute ago!
The finch suddenly flied down and landed beside me. It began moving around wildly. I ignored it.
"Al-" I tried to choke out, but the words got stuck in my throat. Sweat began pouring down my face.
"Ali," I finally managed to say, "Ali!" I began shouting.
Tears were streaming down my face. I tried to ignore them.
"Alison! Please wake up!" I sobbed, as I looked at her beautiful face, covered with bruises.
But my frantic sobbing stopped when I felt her grab my hand tightly.
Her eyes suddenly flied open. But my face turned pale to see them.
"He's coming for you," she told me urgently, gripping my hand even tighter, "he is coming to kill you. Run and don't look back. You must live. You must therefore run. Go, Finch, and don't look back! I love you."
Her eyes closed and she fell back into my arms.
I trembled.
Her eyes had been vicious, full of urgency, but mostly filled with love.
However, the expression in her eyes haven't been the most shocking thing.
When I had looked at them, I had expected to see Ali's warm chocolate brown eyes. But instead I had seen sparkling, blue eyes.
Sapphire coloured eyes.
