Chapter 17

James' POV

She lies in the soft grass, moving around restlessly.

"Pain. Stop the pain," she cries in her sleep.

It breaks my heart to see her like this. Poor Ali.

I stroke her hair and she calms down a bit.

I had been so lucky to get us out of the museum without any questions being asked. I had just simply told the receptionist that Ali had been tired out by our long journey here.

Ali has begun crying in her sleep again. I take her hand.

"Shh, is ok," I whisper gently to her.

She continues to cry. I don't know how to calm her down. She needs some rest after the recent events.

A memory struggles to free itself.

I wake up screaming from a nightmare. I'm seven years old and I'm in a more childish version of my bedroom.

Mama rushes in. She looks a little bit younger. She hugs me.

"Shh, my little one. Is ok, you just had a bad dream."

I move around restlessly and keep crying.

"It was so real mama."

"Well, it wasn't real. You are back here with those who love you so please calm down sweetheart."

I calm down a little and allow mama to keep stroking my hair.

"Mama, will you sing to me?"

Mama smiles. "Of course. Which song would you like to hear?"

"The one that you said has been in our family for a veryyyy long time."

"Ok, lie down," mama says while tucking me in.

She takes my hand and begins singing. I join in too.

"Deep in the meadow, under the willow
A bed of grass, a soft green pillow
Lay down your head, and close your sleepy eyes
And when again they open, the sun will rise."

I let her sing the second part alone.

"Here it's safe, here it's warm
Here the daisies guard you from every harm
Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you."

I smile. "I love you mama."

She smiles and continues with the third part of the lullaby.

"Deep in the meadow, hidden far away
A cloak of leaves, a moonbeam ray
Forget your woes and let your troubles lay
And when again it's morning, they'll wash away."

My eyes begin to close. I let go of mama's hand, and by the time she begins the fourth part, I'm asleep.

"Here it's safe and here it's warm
And here the daisies guard you from every harm
And here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you."

Mama's sweet voice stays with me in my sleep. I dream happy dreams for the rest of the night.

Oh, my sweet mama. If only my life was still like that.

Ali keeps crying. I know how to comfort her now.

I begin singing my mama's lullaby.

Ali stops moving around and smiles.

I feel her squeeze my hand gently.

"Stay with me?" She whispers so quietly that I barely hear her.

I smile as I realise what my response is, and will always be.

"Always," I tell her.

She smiles even more and drifts up into a calm sleep.

(Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't posted a chapter in a while!

Does the lullaby in this chapter sound familiar? Is from the Hunger Games.

I'm sure you also noticed the other THG reference? If you did, please comment your answer and opinion.

Thank you for reading!)
