Chapter 12
"Welcome to our museum. Here you can learn about different time periods and how they lived," the man at the counter said. We were by the entrance of the 'museum'. Something that felt like deja vu went through me.
"Hello," James began, "we wish to look around. How much is it for two teens?"
"That will be eight pounds each please."
We raised our eyebrows at him.
"Being in the middle of nowhere doesn't help us, so our prices have to be high."
He had a point. I got my purse out and counted eight pounds. I noticed that James was giving me a look, but I wanted to pay for myself. He sighed, but knew not to argue with me.
"Ok, you may go right in," the man said, giving James some change, "unless you want a guided tour?"
"No thank you," I replied, walking into the next room.
James followed closely behind me. "Feel anything yet?"
"I keep feeling like I've been here before."
We walked through the rooms until we got to the ballroom.
"Wow," I whispered. It was beautiful. The walls were white, the floor red and the decorations gold.
"Must I really dance?" I asked mother.
"Yes," mother replied in a shocked voice, "every lady will be dancing tonight."
I sighed. "But mother-"
"Pearl, you are not a little girl anymore. Go out there and meet some nice gentleman. May I recommend the Richardson' boy?"
I rolled my eyes. "What, because his family is the wealthiest in the room?"
"Don't roll your eyes at me young lady! And what if he is wealthy?"
"Then the family will have more money if we were to marry."
"They will be no marriage if you don't dance with him- oh my! He's walking in this direction!"
I looked over and saw him walking towards us. He really was handsome. He had blond, wavy hair and ice, blue eyes. Nearly all girls fainted if he a's even glanced in their direction.
"Good evening," he said approaching us.
"Good evening, Mr. Richardson. How are you this fine evening?" Mother asked.
"If I'm honest, a bit sad."
Mother looked taken back. "And why is that, may I ask?"
"Well, I haven't had one drink tonight as I can't as even approach the food table without being tackled into a conversation."
"Oh, my! Well, please wait here Mr.Richardson, I will ask a servant to get you one right away." She left. Didn't she know it would be faster to get it herself? Of course she did, but she did not want to be seen getting an alcoholic drink. Typical.
"Well, that should take her a while. Thank goodness," he said.
I raised my eyebrows at him. He laughed. "I have been wanting to talk to you all evening, Miss. Hammond. However, your mother has always been present. Do you mind me being so bold?"
"No, not at all. I'm actually pretty grateful."
He smiled. "Then, will you please honour me with this dance, Miss. Hammond?"
I sighed inside a little, but he had gotten rid of my mother. "Yes, of course."
I took his arm and he led us to the middle of the ballroom. I could feel daggers being stared at me by other girls as he put his arm around my waist. He took my hand in his and we began to dance. All I could think about was how I was dancing with the wrong person.
I gasped.
"Ali, what happened? You had a vision, didn't you?"
I nodded. "Pearl was standing here. Her mother wanted her to dance with a rich man, Mr. Richardson, and they talked about marriage. He then came over, hot rid of the mother and asked Pearl to dance. She agreed but felt like she wanted Finch to be the one she was dancing with."
"Well, that complicates things a little. Oh well, I guess we should find out a bit more about this Mr. Richardson."
I nodded. "He was a young man of a wealthy family. He had blond, wavy hair and ice, blue eyes. He seemed to be a popular one amongst the girls. I guess we'd better see if they have any info about him here." I turned to walk away, but James held onto my hand.
Slightly blushing, I turned around. "What?"
"Ali, you are forgetting something
"What am I forgetting?"
He had a twinkle in his eyes. "We are in a ballroom after all."
I understood. "Oh, no, I can't dance."
"Neither can I," he said, then led me to the centre.
"And is now," he said, "time to dance."
