The Hands That Hurt Us- Part 21
Practice came bright and early the next day. As soon as they got to work manager Shik asked if they had "worked out their issues." In which they said they did.
"Good," Shik started, "Because we have a lot of work to do." He started going over practice schedules and all the back to back events they had to prepare for.
The members were all getting a bit flustered seeing all the things they had to do in such a short amount of time. It was a good two weeks full of non stop concerts, promotions, TV interviews, and some commercials they had to shoot.
"I understand we are a little behind on things, but isn't this a bit much? There isn't enough time in the day to get everything done on this schedule," Jin said as he looked over the paper again.
"You, I mean we, will get it done." He gave Jin a pat on the back, making Jungkook tense up at the gesture. He made sure to stay behind everyone and not bother talking or expressing his opinions on the matter. He knew for his own sake it was best he just kept his mouth shut. But it was extremely hard suppressing the need to scream at his manager to not touch his hyung.
"Anyway, get to work. I have things to do." Shik took back the schedule paper as the members dispersed out across the dance floor.
Namjoon ran up behind Shik. "Do you have a second?" he asked.
"Not really, no. I have a lot to do Namjoon. Can it wait?" Shik asked impatiently as he opened the door to leave.
Namjoon wasn't too sure if it could wait or not, he and the rest of the members were extremely worried about their maknae's behavior at home and needed the mans input.
"I uh...I don't know, can we talk at some point today at least?" Namjoon asked.
"I'll see if I can find time," Shik said as he escaped out the door.
Namjoon was a bit confused, he had never seen his manager in such a hurry before. He turned back into the room to get ready for practice.
"He seems kind of stressed," Namjoon pointed out.
"I wonder why?" Taehyung asked.
"Well we've been slacking so clearly he's trying to get us to make up for lost time. People are angry and honestly, we've probably cost the company some money," Yoongi said.
The members agreed that they felt bad and guilty for causing some issues. Jungkook didn't partake in the agreement. He figured Shik did it to himself. If he didn't beat me up half the time, we'd be right on schedule. So whose fault is it really? Although knowing his manager was more stressed than usual made him apprehensive. If the man could be so mean while calm, Jungkook didn't even want to experience how nasty he could be while stressed out.
"I guess we have no time to waste then, do we? Let's go, everyone into position!" Hobi yelled as he began dance practice.
Dance practice was intense today considering they had live performances they had to do shortly that they hadn't been aware of until now.
Jungkook was feeling particularly stressed because he knew that every single time he performed he was risking getting his hyungs hurt if he messed up. He was already a perfectionist but he was becoming a lot harder on himself during practice. Every little mistake he made, which Hobi told him not to even worry about, he'd make himself practice over and over again. He couldn't risk it.
Before they knew it, it was already night time and time to go. The members agreed that practice had gone well and they felt ready for the busy schedule ahead. Jungkook thought about asking one of his hyungs to stay behind with him so he could practice more, but he could see how exhausted they all were and figured he could practice at home if he really wanted to. He felt like he'd been burdening them enough lately.
On the way home from practice, Jungkook realized he hadn't seen his manager at all aside from the one time that morning. Today was different. The man usually stopped by multiple times and always needed to speak with him 'privately', or something of the sort. He became aware that for the first time in months, he was leaving work without any new bruises or injuries or limps. He couldn't help but smile to himself, it felt nice. But at the same time, what the hell is going on? Why hasn't he hit me today? Or even acknowledged us after this morning? What is he up to?
Namjoon was feeling the complete opposite of Jungkook. He was sad he hadn't gotten time to speak with Shik about his concerns regarding his maknae. He knew it would have to wait for now. He hoped him and the rest of the members could handle however Jungkook would act at home until they could finally go to their manager for some advice on the matter.
Namjoon wasn't all too sure what he needed from Shik, he figured he'd tell him his concerns and ask if maybe the company could investigate online to see if they could find anything that maybe they'd been missing. He also needed to talk to Shik about Jungkook trying therapy again. Jungkook was unaware that Namjoon wanted him to try again, he knew his maknae wasn't ready to hear that quite yet. He wasn't ready to tell him.
Once they got home, all of the hyungs tried to prepare for the worst. They prepared for Jungkook to start acting out or fighting with them, asking them to smack him, whatever it might be. To their surprise, he seemed completely fine.
"Are you okay?" Jimin asked Jungkook as they gathered into the kitchen to start helping make dinner.
"Me? Yeah, why?" Jungkook asked.
"You're just different today," Jimin noticed. Although he wondered if he could really consider it as different, if anything Jungkook was acting like his old normal self, something they hadn't seen much of lately.
"Is that a bad thing?" The maknae asked.
"No, of course not." Jimin walked over and squeezed Jungkook's shoulder. "It's nice."
Jungkook gave him a confused look before turning back to setting the table. Taehyung noticed that Jin was keeping a close eye on Jungkook while he took the glasses out of the cabinet to set out, he couldn't help but chuckle.
The atmosphere that night was different in the house. It was calm and relaxing. And to everyone's enjoyment, Jungkook was laughing. The members noticed he was in a really good mood, for whatever reason.
Although he was in a good mood, Jungkook still kept his guard up. Jimin and Taehyung had started wrestling eachother on the living room floor and from the couch Jungkook kept repeating , "Don't hurt eachother," or "Stop before you hurt eachother."
In their playful mood, Jimin grabbed Jungkook's wrist and pulled him off the couch onto the floor with them and started to wrestle him too. He didn't quite mind, and even had fun at first, until Jimin and Taehyung teamed up and both had him pinned to the floor.
"No."Jungkook was okay the first second but as soon as he realized he couldn't move because of his hyungs body weight he felt himself start to panic. "Let me up."
"What's the magic word?" Taehyung asked as he held one of Jungkook's arms down while Jimin lay completely on top of him pinning him to the floor.
"I don't know, let me up," Jungkook asked again, a bit more panicked. The weight of Jimin pinning him down was making it hard for him to breathe.
Although Jimin wasn't heavy to him, but he felt trapped and it was scaring him. He had flashbacks of the times Shik would throw him to the floor or block him in place.
"Well you have to think of the magic word first!" Jimin chuckled.
Taehyung let go of Jungkook's arm when he could tell his maknae was getting visibly upset. His face was turning red and he was starting to hyperventilate as his eyes got wet. "Please, don't hurt me," he whispered to Jimin as tears suddenly fell out of the corners of his eyes.
Jimin quickly sat up and pulled Jungkook up into a hug,m. "Kook-ah you know I wouldn't hurt you. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you upset." Jimin felt terrible. He wasn't too sure what he'd done but he knew at the very least that because of him his maknae was crying and it made him feel like garbage.
Jungkook quickly wiped his tears away, he felt stupid for getting upset. "I'm fine, I'm fine."
Jimin was so guilt ridden seeing Jungkook cry that he also got teary eyed, leading a chain reaction to Taehyung also getting watery eyes.
Yoongi walked in and saw them. "What the hell? What happened? Why are you all crying?" he asked concerned.
"I..." Jimin started, but Jungkook cut him off, "It was nothing, we're fine."
Yoongi turned and left mumbling to himself. How did we end up with the weirdest maknae line in the world?
Right after that Namjoon came in and said everyone should probably get to bed, it was late and they had a very busy schedule ahead. The members made their way to their rooms and after about an hour Jimin still felt too guilty to fall asleep. He kept wondering why Jungkook had gotten scared, or sad, or whatever it was that made him start crying. Did I hurt him somehow? What was it that I did? Why would he be afraid of me?
He also found it strange that half the time Jungkook was asking them to beat on him and then the other half of the time he was asking them to not hurt him. He didn't get it. He decided he wanted to go and be with him that night instead, he was hoping he was awake still so he could talk to him. He went and peeked into the room and saw that both Taehyung and Jungkook were passed out in their beds. Jimin climbed into Jungkook's and wrapped his arms around him, which stirred his maknae awake.
"Are you up?" Jimin whispered.
"No," Jungkook whispered back. Jimin chuckled and hugged him tighter.
"I need to ask you something," Jimin started.
"Hmm?" Jungkook's eyes were still closed.
"Do you feel safe here?"
"Where?"
"Here. I mean at home I guess. Like..with hyungs? Do you feel safe with us?" Jimin felt nervous. He didn't know what answer he was expecting but he was hoping it wasn't a no.
"Of course."
"Okay. Just checking." Jimin cuddled up close to his maknae so the two could fall asleep.
The next day started with three separate TV interviews. Manager Shik wasn't there for the first two, but he was able to make it to the third one. Jungkook's mood shifted once their manager was with them. In the first two interviews he had been silly and playful and talkative, but during this third interview he was reserved and kept still and quiet in the back of everyone. Shik noticed it and wasn't too pleased.
After the interview Shik went up to Jungkook in the dressing room and leaned into his ear. "I need more effort from you."
Jungkook nodded his head without even looking at the man. He could feel his eyes staring at him. He didn't know what Shik wanted. It seemed like nothing he did was ever right in that mans eyes. He either did too much and it made his manager mad, or he did too little and it made his manager mad. He didn't know how to find a middle ground to ever make him happy.
This interview was followed by two more interviews. Five in one day. The members were absolutely exhausted. None of them knew why Shik had them doing so many things all in a short amount of time.
The next two weeks were the exact same. Interview after interview. They'd even shot several commercials. The members had a final concert on the last day of the two week period that they were still preparing for. Over the past two weeks everyone noticed Jungkook was doing a lot better. He was fine at home, and he also seemed pretty okay at work too.
They'd probably only seen manager Shik twice during the time span, and neither of those times did he ever ask to speak with Jungkook 'privately.' The maknae was starting to become hopeful, he didn't know what had his manager so busy but he was enjoying it. Namjoon was still frustrated because for the past two weeks he kept trying to tell Shik he needed to speak with him about something, but the man was too damn busy every single day. Towards the end of the two weeks though, Namjoon thought maybe he wouldn't need to talk to Shik anymore considering how well Jungkook was doing lately. Maybe this weird phase was over.
On the night of their final performance, the members were looking forward to not only the concert but also being able to relax for a day afterwards as this was finally the end of their hectic schedule.
Backstage while doing warmups Jungkook was looking around for Shik but the man was nowhere in sight. He was full of nerves, he knew Shik couldn't have just changed overnight so he was still absolutely terrified of messing up on stage.
One wrong move and it'd be over for one of his hyungs and it'd be all his fault. He took deep breaths as they got ready to go. Shik was usually standing backstage watching their live performances, so nobody knew where he was.
On stage the cheer of ARMY had all of the members energy high. They put on a full concert, and during the last song Jungkook was having so much fun he wasn't even worried about his manager.
The cheers and excitement of the night had him goofing off and playing around on stage with his hyungs. Letting his guard down wasn't the greatest idea, because towards the end of their last song, he made a mistake. He was in the wrong position for the formation after being distracted by a fan sign and had to run to the correct spot, he had made it to the right spot in time, but knowing he had messed up instantly sent him into a panic. He tried to hide his panic the rest of the song.
No no no! You're an absolute idiot!
Once they were finished, all the panic and anxiety he was trying to hide on stage finally caught up to him. He fell onto his back. He was terrified.
He's going to kill me. He's going to kill hyungs.
Laying there in his panic he felt someone grab his arm and start pulling him backstage, it was Hobi. Once backstage, Jungkook completely broke down and sobbed.
"I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry." He cried into his hands until all of the members gathered around him and hugged him tightly.
"Why are you sorry?!" Jimin wondered. "You did a great job maknae!" He tried to wipe the tears off Jungkook's face but they wouldn't let up.
"I-I m-mmm-messed-up." He was crying so hard he was starting to hyperventilate.
Yoongi yelled for one of the medical staff members to bring over an oxygen can for the youngest.
The staff member came over and Yoongi snatched the can to help Jungkook use it. He wanted to be the one to help, he was feeling extremely overprotective.
"Bunny," Hobi started, "Who cares? ARMY was laughing, yeah? We all messed up. I mean did you see Namjoonie walk right into Taehyung? It was hilarious!" Hobi smiled. The others tried to offer words of encouragement too but nothing was working.
"I don't understand why you're so upset," Jimin gestured, "It's not like you haven't made small mistakes before and you can't expect to never make another mistake at some point. It happens to all of us."
Jungkook didn't want to hear it. They didn't understand that he wasn't allowed to make mistakes. Not anymore. Not when it could cost someone he loves their safety. He ended up clinging tightly to everyone holding him and he began to shake with how hard he was crying.
Yoongi pressed the oxygen can back to Jungkook's mouth."Okay, hey. Deep breaths. You have to take deep breaths before you end up passing out or something."
Jin tried to wipe the boys tears but they were still overflowing.
"What's this about bunny? Is it about Hobi?" Jin asked. Everyone looked at eachother confused.
"What about me?" Hobi asked with a somewhat annoyed expression. He didn't see how he could have possibly had anything to do with this.
"Well sometimes you scold us when we mess up the choreography," said Jin.
"What! Well yeah but I mean not that bad!" Hobi got defensive. No way would Jungkook be that afraid of being scolded by Hobi, of all people. Hobi turned back to Jungkook. "That's not what this is about is it? Because I'm not mad about it."
Jungkook shook his head no.
Hobi turned back to Jin. "See it's not me!" he said defensively.
The members hearts were breaking. They had been hopeful the past two weeks that Jungkook was starting to feel better from whatever it was he was going through. He really seemed like he was doing well. They hadn't seen him injured or cry the past two weeks except that one time when the maknae's had been wrestling. They realized it wasn't going to be that easy. Namjoon knew he still needed to talk to Shik about it.
Everyone turned when they heard the door open and saw manager Shik walk in. Jungkook's crying and shaking got even worse.
Shik walked over to them. "What the hell is going on?"
Jungkook buried his head into Namjoon's shoulder and gripped him tightly, his crying and shaking got even worse. Yoongi was trying to get the oxygen can back against the youngests mouth so he could breathe better but it became too difficult because Jungkook wouldn't back out from Namjoon.
"He's a bit upset," Jimin informed their boss.
"Why?" Shik asked.
Jungkook was confused by his managers question. He wondered if Shik hadn't seen the performance and didn't know he'd messed up. Although he was about to know right now, so that didn't do him any good. He then wondered why his manager wouldn't have watched it. The man had a damn eagle eye on him at all times while they were performing. He really started to wonder what the man was up to.
"He messed up and is just a little bit upset about it," Taehyung said while running his hands through his maknae's hair.
Namjoon felt Jungkook's entire body tense up and grip him tighter. He frowned. He wished his maknae knew it wasn't as big of a deal as he was making it to be.
"Oh." Shik waved his hand, he seemed to not acknowledge it. However, he immediately asked Namjoon if he had a moment to talk.
Jungkook thought he was going to be sick. Oh my God no no no! Not Namjoon! No! Please don't hurt hyungie! Please don't hurt my hyungie!
"Sure," Namjoon replied and tried to stand up but Jungkook had created a death grip around him. "No," the maknae whispered in Namjoon's ear.
Namjoon shot him a concerned look before trying to stand up again but Jungkook would just not let him go.
"Jungkook, it's okay. I'll be right back." Namjoon tried to pry his arms off but it was no use. He wondered why he was being so clingy.
"Jungkook, I need to talk to Namjoon," Shik said as he crossed his arms.
The youngest didn't know what punishment this behavior would get him from his manager later on after this but right now he didn't care. It was still better than letting anything happen to his hyung. The rest of the members helped pry Jungkook away and Namjoon was finally able to get up.
"What's going on with you?" Jin asked again. He knew Jungkook was acting strange lately but this was something new.
Jungkook watched Namjoon disappear out the door with their manager and he wanted to scream. He dropped onto his back and saw black spots in his vision, he felt like he was going to pass out.
The members started fanning him and offering him water that he didn't want. Yoongi kept up with the oxygen.
"A panic attack this bad over a simple mistake?" Yoongi asked. "That's not making sense to me maknae."
The members agreed, this wasn't making any sense to them.
Outside the room, Shik didn't take Namjoon very far. They were right in the hallway.
"I have a quick second while we're here, so what is it that you keep needing to talk to me about?" Shik asked.
Namjoon gestured to the backstage room. "Well, Jungkook."
"What about him? I mean aside from whatever the hell he's doing right now?"
"Well, what he's doing right now is a bit of the concern. He's been like that at home too. We're all really worried about him. He gets himself in trouble and starts fights and then thinks we should all hit him or hurt him and none of us know why and we don't know what to do."
"He's been asking those things at home?"
"Yeah and it's worrying the hell out of us because we think someone or something is scaring or hurting him and we don't know what it could be."
Shik looked at him with a curious expression. Shik was livid. Jungkook is being obvious about things at home?
"I'll look into it." Unfortunately Shik was up to something and he didn't have time at the moment to address the issue. "But first, I have a surprise for you."
Within five minutes Namjoon was back in the room with the members. He was hurt to see Jungkook still a mess on the floor, but he had sat back up when he saw Namjoon walk in. Jungkook stared at him intensely. Eyeing Namjoon's every movement to see if he 'd been hurt. To his surprise, Namjoon seemed completely fine, he was even smiling and had only been gone for five minutes.
"So apparently," Namjoon smiled, "He's sending us on a vacation."
All the members looked at each other excitedly. Jungkook wasn't excited. He was just confused. What the hell is going on?!
"To where?" Hobi asked.
"Hawaii."
