The Hands That Hurt Us - Part 11
Jin held Jungkook tightly and wouldn't let him go. Yoongi wanted to partake in smothering his maknae, but he let Jin have his moment.
"What on earth is all this about?" Jungkook asked confused. He knew he was slammed with a chair and now his head hurt, but that was it. Ironically, he didn't remember forgetting.
"You haven't had your memory for two damn days. We were so worried. The doctor said it could have been months before you got your memory back. I definitely didn't expect it this soon though!" Jin yelled excitedly.
"Two days?" The maknae asked, still confused. He wondered what had happened during those two days where he apparently wasn't in his head.
"Yeah, bunny. The first day in the hospital and then we brought you home this morning," Yoongi informed him.
"Hospital?" Jungkook asked.
"Jungkook do you not remember even going to the hospital?" Jin asked
"No, hyung. I just remember being in my studio and that's it."
Yoongi decided it was time he asked the million dollar question he knew everyone was dying to know the answer to. "Do you remember how you hurt yourself? You were found on your studio floor with a huge cut on your head, memory loss, and a concussion. You were drowning in blood. Taehyung passed right out when he saw you. How'd that happen?"
Yoongi and Jin held their breath waiting for the answer.
"I...I don't remember what I did to cause that," Jungkook lied. He very much remembered what Shik had done to cause that, but he couldn't tell his hyungs.
"Ugh come on seriously?!" Jin gripped Jungkooks arms, he was desperate for answers. "Think, maknae! You must have fallen or something right? The chair was next to you, were you on it?!"
Jungkook tensed up in Jin's grip and froze. He didn't know what to say. He stared at Jin with wide eyes.
"Hyung calm down. The doctor said even if he got his memory back he still might not remember what happened. He got a bad concussion, and you're scaring him," Yoongi scolded Jin . He could tell Jungkook was nervous.
"Aish!" Jin pulled Jungkook back into a hug. "Sorry, bunny. We were all just hoping you'd have remembered. It's okay if you don't."
"I'm sorry, hyung." Jungkook rested his head into Jin's chest and let himself be held. He liked it when his hyungs hugged him. He felt like they were the only arms in the world that were never going to hurt him, and the only arms that would never let him get hurt.
"You have nothing to be sorry for. But you do have to promise us you'll be more careful. We're all going to have heart failure if you keep scaring us half to death like this," Yoongi pointed out. It was true. The members could only watch Jungkook get hurt so many times before completely losing their minds.
"Should we wake the others up and tell them?" Jin asked Yoongi.
"No, it can wait. Everyone is exhausted, and I know Taehyung definitely needs a lot of rest."
Jungkook got anxious, had something happened to Taehyung during these past two days? "TaeTae? What's wrong with Taehyungie?"
"He's just been up worrying about you. We all have but considering he shares the room with you it's been harder for him. He'll be glad to know your memory is back. But you also need to get more rest. So back to bed." Yoongi gestured for Jungkook to go back to his room. Both his hyungs followed close behind and watched him climb not into his own bed, but into Taehyung's. He wrapped himself around Taehyung and Jin threw the blanket over the both of them.
"Goodnight Kook-ah, see you in the morning. Oh and just so you know it's a doctors order for you to not go unsupervised so if you need anything you need to wake up Taehyung first," Jin told him, but then the eldest realized what Yoongi had said about Taehyung needing rest too. "Actually I'll stay in your bed tonight. If you need anything wake me up, not Tae."
The maknae nodded in agreement and then closed his eyes. All he could think about was how exhausted he was and how badly his head hurt. Yoongi said goodnight and departed back to his own room, smiling to himself. They may not have gotten the answers they were hoping for, but at least his bunny's memory was intact.
Taehyung woke up in the morning confused as to why Jungkook was in his bed, but he was happy about it. He gently crawled over him to get out of bed, giving his maknae a small kiss on the cheek before leaving. All the other members were in the kitchen, Hobi and Jimin were cooking breakfast. Everyone was smiling.
"What?" Taehyung asked them, wondering why everyone seemed oddly happy.
"Hyung's said his memory came back last night!" Jimin yelled excitedly.
Taehyung was still confused wondering when that could have happened, last he knew Jungkook was passed out in bed. He turned to Jin. "Hyung?"
"It's true, Tae. He woke up in the middle of the night after you went back to bed and his memory was back," Jin informed him.
"It's really back?! Jungkook!" Taehyung turned to run back into his room yelling for Jungkook.
Namjoon tried to grab his arm to stop him and told him the youngest needed sleep, but Taehyung got out of his hyungs grip and ran into the room anyways.
"Jungkook! Jungkook!" Taehyung shook him awake.
Jungkook opened his eyes and grabbed his head. "What, Taehyungie? Why are you so loud?" he mumbled groggily.
Taehyung jumped into the bed right on top of him and held him in a death grip, at least that's what it felt like to Jungkook.
"You remember me again?!" the boy grabbed his maknae's cheeks in his hands, smiling.
"Yes, hyung." Jungkook rubbed his eyes.
Namjoon showed up in the doorway. "Sorry, I tried to stop him," he shrugged.
Jungkook smirked, he knew by now it was basically impossible to stop Taehyung from doing whatever he wanted.
"Kook-ah hyungs are making breakfast, come eat." Taehyung grabbed Jungkook by the shirt and tried to pull him out of the bed.
Namjoon stepped in. "Taehyung let him sleep." He tried to sound more stern this time.
"It's okay. I need a drink anyway." Jungkook also crawled out of bed. A wave of nausea hit him when he stood up. He felt like garbage. His head was pounding a million beats a minute and his body felt weird. He let himself be dragged to the kitchen by Taehyung.
When he went to the cabinet for a cup, he reached his arm up and paused, he felt eyes glaring at him. He turned to see Jin standing behind him, watching him, "Plastic cup," Jin reminded. So he grabbed a plastic one. This is a stupid rule. Everyone knows water tastes better in a glass.
Once breakfast was ready, everyone helped set it out on the table. Yoongi already told the others that Jungkook doesn't remember how he fell, and that he probably never would and told them not to pry or pressure him about it. But they still wanted to talk to him about what happened, however they decided to at least wait until after breakfast.
"I'm not all that hungry, I don't feel good." For the first time in what felt like a while, Jungkook knew he wasn't lying. He really wasn't hungry, because he really didn't feel good. Hobi walked over to him and put his hand to his forehead. "Uh-oh."
"What?" Jimin asked concerned.
"He's warm," Hobi informed.
Namjoon went and got a thermometer and to their surprise Jungkook had a 100F fever.
"Is that bad? I mean that can't be good right? What if his stitches are infected or something?" Jimin cried.
"Infected?" Jungkook frowned. He didn't want an infection on top of everything else, but he really felt sick.
Jin walked over to where Jungkook was sitting at the table and gently took his bandage off. "They don't look infected but I'm not a doctor so I don't know."
Namjoon decided to call the doctor, who had left his number in the care packet. He talked to him on the phone for a few minutes and turned to his members. "He said sometimes fevers are normal with concussions but not to worry too much about it. However if it rises above 101F he has to go back to the ER."
Jungkook groaned.
"They couldn't possibly be infected anyways after manager Shik accidentally dumped all that antiseptic on it. That definitely would knock out any infection," Yoongi said.
Jungkook felt himself fill with not anxiety this time, but anger.
"Why did manager Shik give me medicine?" Jungkook clearly had anger in his voice. Maybe I feel like shit because he poisoned me or something?! Why was he even at our house!?
"He was here and wanted to help you because he felt bad," Jimin told him.
Felt bad my ass!
"Yeah he offered to clean your stitches but accidentally spilled a bunch of it on you at once, it definitely hurt," Taehyung added.
Accidentally, right.
Jungkook's blood was boiling at this point. They just let Shik hurt me right in front of them?
"You guys are supposed to-" Jungkook stopped himself.
"Supposed to what?" Hobi asked with a mouth full of food.
"Nothing, nevermind."
You guys are supposed to protect me.
"Actually speaking of, he wants stop by later again to check on you," Namjoon told him.
"No!" Jungkook didn't mean to sound panicked, but he was panicked.
"What do you mean no?" Yoongi gave him a questioning look.
"I just don't feel good, hyung. I'm really not up for visitors. Are we allowed to tell him I don't want visitors right now?" Jungkook frowned and held his breath.
Namjoon stared at his maknae for a moment and could easily tell he truly didn't feel good. "Okay, I'll let him know he can't come today."
"Thanks," Jungkook whispered to himself as the tension in his body subsided. He was glad he had hyungs who listened to him, at least for the most part.
Everyone cleaned up after breakfast and Namjoon requested everyone remain at the kitchen table afterwards. He knew they all needed to have a serious talk with Jungkook. Once everyone was seated again, Jin took one of the care packets the doctor had given him and placed it on the table in front of the maknae.
"What's this?" Jungkook asked.
"Go to the back of it," Jimin commanded. They all watched Jungkook turn to the back of the packet. The domestic abuse brochure.
"What's this?" the maknae asked again, confused.
"Is there something you want to tell us? Or want to tell us, but can't tell us?" Taehyung asked.
Jungkook was still extremely confused. "Umm...no?" He looked at the brochure. "I don't know what this is." He looked up to see all his hyungs staring at him.
"Well to get to the point, your doctor said you're showing signs of being in some kind of abusive relationship. We told him you're not in a relationship, but according to this book." Namjoon held up his psychology book. "It's kind of saying the same thing. So we're a little worried."
"I'm not though," Jungkook protested.
"See, I told you guys," Yoongi boasted. He knew Jungkook wouldn't keep a secret like that from them.
"Well how do we know you're not lying to us?" Jimin asked.
"I wouldn't lie."
"Yes you would," Hobi spoke up.
"What?"
"Jungkook-ah you've been lying about your injuries since you got them. You tried hiding your wrist from Taehyung. And-" Hobi hesitated, "-You lied to me too."
"When did I lie to you, Hobi-hyung?"
"Your sock had berry juice on it? Really? Jungkook I saw the bottom of your foot yesterday. I know it was blood on that sock. If you have nothing to hide from us, why are you lying?" The sadness was evident in Hobi's voice.
Jungkook was caught off guard with that one. He didn't think Hobi would have ever figured out he had lied. He was internally panicking as he tried to come up with more lies. He knew he could not under any circumstance tell any of them Shik was hurting him. Shik had threatened and proved enough that he'd hurt them if he spoke up. And Jungkook would let Shik beat him to death a million times over before ever risking that man laying a finger on one of his hyungs.
"I was just embarrassed. I'm sorry. I've just been clumsy lately and didn't want all this concern to happen, but apparently it did anyways. I'm supposed to be the golden maknae and I feel like getting hurt disappoints everyone." That was the best the maknae could come up with on the spot.
"Bunny, we'd never be disappointed in you. Don't hold yourself to such a high standard all the time. It's okay to make mistakes. As much as we hate seeing you get hurt, if it's going to happen, just be honest with us. We're here to help you, not look down on you," Jin said reassuringly.
"That still doesn't explain the night terrors you've been having, and you clawing away at your own skin. Jin cut your nails in your sleep by the way," Yoongi spoke up. He was the one who had been witnessing the night terrors, so he knew how bad they had gotten.
Jungkook finally noticed his nails, what the hell?
"I've just been stressed out."
"Why?" Namjoon sounded a bit demanding.
"It just comes with the job. You know that."
"But what specifically has you so stressed out?" Namjoon was persistent.
"I just am, okay?" Jungkook was getting more defensive. He wanted this conversation to be over. He took the care packet on the table and shoved it aside. "Are we done now?"
"No, we're not. If you don't want to talk to us about what the problem is, would you consider talking to a therapist?" Namjoon asked.
Jungkook angrily stood up. "A therapist?! Why the hell would I need a therapist?! I'm not crazy!"
Taehyung held Jungkook's hand. "Nobody said you were crazy. If you're so stressed out maybe talking to someone will help."
"Only crazy people need therapists!" The maknae crossed his arms and huffed, "And I'm not crazy."
Namjoon furrowed his brows and grabbed his forehead, sighing. He was hoping Jungkook would have been on board with some kind of help.
"Okay, okay. No therapist," Hobi chimed in. "But Jungkook you have to know we're all here for you. Whatever it is that's going on. We're all in this together."
Jungkook glared at him, no we're not. I'm in this alone. Taehyung gestured for him to sit back down. Jimin came over and knelt in front of him, taking his maknae's hand in his own.
"So you don't want to go to therapy?" Jimin asked. Jungkook shook his head no.
"Okay, that's fair. And nobody, at all, is hurting you?" Jungkook shook his head no again.
"Look me in the eyes and tell me nobody is hurting you," Jimin demanded.
Jungkook looked him dead in the eyes. "Nobody is hurting me." He was fighting back tears. What he wouldn't give to be able to tell them the truth right now. Namjoon looked at the psychology book he was holding, maybe the book is wrong?
"Okay then." Jimin stood up and hugged Jungkook.
The younger couldn't hold it in anymore, he started crying into his hyung's shirt. Jimin rubbed his back. The rest of the members made their way to him and also rubbed his back.
"Hey," Namjoon started, "We just worry, okay? We don't want to see something really bad happen to you. I mean this head thing was bad enough. I can't imagine something worse. The doctor said he doesn't want to see you dead and that thought scared the hell out of us."
It scared the hell out of Jungkook too. Would Shik actually kill me? If he wanted to do that, wouldn't he have done it by now? He's had his chances.
"I guess that's all there is to it, then. However we should probably go over the actual care part of the packet with you," Yoongi said to Jungkook.
The maknae wiped his tears and nodded. The members sat there reading through all the instructions. They told Jungkook they'd help him with his stitches medicine, but when it started to hurt less over time he could do it himself, if that's what he wanted. They also discussed their schedule and how the members had the option to work in the studio or at home.
Jungkook got nervous thinking about any of them being in the studio alone with manager Shik there. He requested that they either work from home or at least go to the studio in pairs.
They didn't seem to refuse or question the request. They told him he's not allowed to go back to work until his concussion was gone, he didn't protest, he had no problem not being at the studio. However he still loved his job, and asked that someone bring home some of his recording equipment so he could still do some work.
A couple weeks had gone by and Jungkook had gotten a lot better. He never really had to deal with his manager.
The man had managed to weasel his way over to their house a handful of times, but his hyungs really strictly stuck to the rule of not leaving him unsupervised, so even when manager Shik was there it was impossible for the man to get his hands on him. The most he could ever do was give him dirty looks or some threatening hand gestures. Jungkook for once felt like he had the upperhand. He had very protective hyungs and there was nothing his manager could do about it.
Jungkook's fun personality started to come back too. He started eating normally, his night terrors stopped, he had no urge to scratch himself, and he was funny again. He'd wrestle his hyungs, although they always went way too easy on him these days and always let him win. He was able to record some songs, and did a great job redoing his vocals for Namjoon. He didn't present any new injuries and Jin even gave him permission to start using the glass cups again, a small win in Jungkook's book.
The members saw the difference and knew their maknae really needed this break from work. Although the reason he got the break to begin with wasn't something they ever wanted to happen again. The members also appreciated the extra time to stay at home, it made them feel closer, which they didn't know was even possible. One day a blizzard had come and they were all able to go out and sled together. However Jungkook still hadn't been cleared of his concussion, so the members made him wear a bike helmet. They all thought it was hilarious.
Throughout the weeks Jungkook had check ups with the doctor. He did struggle with fevers at the beginning but luckily those had stopped without any further complications. He credited that to all the chicken noodle soup Jin had forced him to eat. His wrist had healed completely and at his last visit he was allowed to have his wrist brace removed. The members wanted to keep it, which Jungkook didn't quite understand, but he learned at a young age that his members were weird and didn't make sense most of the time.
The same day his wrist brace was removed, he was also able to get his stitches out. Thankfully the cut had been under his hair, so a scar wouldn't be noticeable.
He had another visit with the doctor today, and he was nervous. All of his hyungs went with him to all his visits, but this one was probably the most important. This one would determine if his concussion was gone or not yet. And Jungkook knew what that meant. When they got into the room, his doctor came in greeting him with a smile. The members all said hello, they were on way better terms now than they were the day their maknae was strolled into the hospital bleeding.
The doctor did a quick physical checkup. "Your hyungs take really good care of you, don't they?"
Jungkook nodded his head yes.
"That's what we strive for," Taehyung replied.
The doctor finished the physical and did a few more tests, and also asked Jungkook a series of questions. The members were super anxious to find out if their maknae was officially healed or not.
"Well, Mr. Jungkook," The doctor started.
Jungkook gulped and held his hands together, sweating.
"You seem to be all healed up," The doctor smiled. "You are cleared to return to work full time."
