Chapter Twenty-Six
The full moon was slowly making its way to the highest point in the sky. Tonight my mate will complete her first transformation. I did want to be there for it, but I was the trail of another werewolf. I came across it's scent as I was leaving my house. The scent hasn't been from anyone in Edward's pack. Instead of informing him, I took it upon myself to track it down. Besides, I was the closest to this side of the border.
Coming to a stop in the middle of the forest, I searched around. The rogue was here somewhere. He seemed to have used the fox tactic of escaping, but it was no good with my sense of smell. Closing my eyes, I focused my nose. The unique scent was all around me. Clearly this wolf had time to run around marking his scent before I caught up.
The second I looked in the direction where the scent was strongest he hurried away. Not wanting to lose him, I went after him. This straightforward chase was getting me nowhere. Using the tree trucks like bouncing balls, I propelled myself forward. Sure a dent would be left, but the extra push should do the trick.
As I gained on him, he suddenly came to a stop. I, however, had already used another tree to help launch me, so I went sailing past him, grabbing onto the next tree behind him. A growl left me when I looked at him.
He was a man on the short side. No taller than the average human female. Half his hair was dried green and the other part white. It was the most noticeable thing about him besides his face. He wore loose fitted clothes that consisted of a t-shirt and jeans with a pair of white sneakers. My guess is that he wasn't from here. He looked the part, but his face showed features that he was a foreigner.
"Who are you?" I asked after lowering myself to the ground. My voice held the tone of an alpha. Normally I wouldn't use the tone as it wasn't necessary, but this man was a stranger. One that clearly had a purpose.
The stranger smiled. He then turned his head to the left.
Were there more of them? Immediately, my senses went up. I didn't realize I could have walked right into a trap.
"You alphas are always on guard. It'll do you some good to relax and enjoy the moment."
His voice was foreign too. I didn't recognize where it was from though. "Tell me who you are and report to Alpha Edward."
"Hmm," he tilted his head slightly to the side, not bothering to even look at me. "I think we will discuss my reason for being here at another time."
When he did look at me, I saw a glint in his blue eyes. One that said he was up to no good. He turned, running. With a sigh, I took off after him. He's too arrogant. As I ran, her voice stopped me. It was distant, but I knew she was close. The thought that this stranger could be heading in her direction and meant to do her hurt crossed my mind.
There was no way I could continue this chase without seeing for myself if Amelia was ok. Looking back in the direction he went, I sighed once more. He was gone, but I could always pick up his scent again. He wouldn't get away from me. Turning I quietly headed in the direction I heard Amelia.
It wasn't long before I caught the glimpse of Amelia's curly, brown hair. I wasn't close enough so that they spotted me, but I could easily hear them. One look around told me that the stranger hadn't come this way. Good.
"It doesn't hurt, right?" Amelia asked. Her back was to my direction, but I could sense the apprehension mixed into her scent.
Romulus turned to face her. He was standing in front of her. "Your first change will, but it will hurt more if you struggle."
"Why me?" She tilted her head to the skies.
"Because you're my pup." An amused smile was on his face.
They must have been talking beforehand. The only reason he would bring her out here was for the transformation, but somehow I thought he would have supervised her change somewhere closer to her house or near Night Walkers land.
She must have made a face because Romulus's smile widened.
"I prefer 'child' or 'kid'. You know, normal labels."
"It's almost time now." He placed a hand on her right shoulder.
Her head dropped a little at those words. "I'm so nervous."
I wish I could console her, but it really wasn't my place. It was the alpha's or parents' job to oversee the transformation of a new werewolf. Sure it is ok to watch, but with her father just coming back into her life, I felt like they needed this moment.
As he moved his other hand to her shoulder, his expression took on a fatherly one. "The change will happen fast. Remember to relax and give your head over to your wolf."
She nodded her head, but the uncertainty remained in her scent. "Can you turn away? It'll be weird with you staring."
He laughed a full belly laugh and said in a loud voice, "O'course, but that means your mate isn't allowed to stare neither. You are still my daughter."
She turned around, searching with her brown eyes. "Lucian?"
I moved from my hiding and approached them. Once I was within range, I arched an eyebrow in Romulus's direction. "I didn't think you caught my scent."
Romulus smirked and placed a fist on his right hip. "I didn't. I heard your approach."
"I didn't make a sound."
"You didn't have to. The forest rodents did it for you."
The amused grin on his face did nothing for my wounded ego. I didn't think the man could maintain his senses that well, especially while trying to put his daughter at ease. I guess that's what experiences does to one who's been through a lot.
"Why are you here?"Amelia easily grabbed my attention.
I couldn't tell her that I was on the trail of a lone wolf. That would probably scare her and make her father on edge. Besides, the stranger didn't seem like much of a threat. Not yet anyway. Besides, he was long gone by now anyway.
Smiling, I took in her beautiful face. "Thought I could be of some help."
She smiled back, which made me happy that I had come to check up on her.
"The moon is almost in position. Go." Romulus held out a brown blanket, I didn't see he had grabbed, to his daughter.
She took it and turned to head behind a tree that was a bit thicker than the one I had been hiding behind. I went to stand beside Romulus, who had turned his back from the tree my mate disappeared behind.
"What we talked about -- I realized it was wrong of me to request that from you. You should forget it." Romulus was looking straight ahead.
I didn't look his way. I wanted Amelia to have all privacy without me catching a glimpse from the corner of my eye. It would make the whole ordeal as comfortable for her as possible. "It'll be wrong if I didn't consider it."
He chuckled once. "That's why I said you should forget it. I know you won't though."
He was right. I wouldn't forget what we discussed. Especially since it concerned her.
"Alright. I'm finished." Amelia's voice interrupted my lingering thoughts.
We turned around at the same time to see Amelia with the sheet wrapped around her body. She was a sight to behold. My wonderful mate looked even more beautiful in just a sheet.
"Just remember: she's still my daughter," Romulus nudged me before stepping forward.
I could sense the meaning behind those words. A silent threat to keep my eyes to myself. I smiled at that. I'm pretty sure he already knew I've seen her, but there's nothing like a father's protective nature to put a potential partner in his place.
"Alright, the moon has ascended to it's rightful spot in the night." Romulus placed his hand on her shoulder once more. "All you have to do is look up at the moon. The change will begin. Just remember to not struggle. Let it happen. Are you ready, Amelia?"
Amelia inhaled then exhaled. "As ready as I'll ever be I guess."
"You can do this. I will be by, and you have your mate here as well." He patted her shoulder and then moved back some.
Amelia's gaze wandered between us both for a moment. Then she turned around. I could hear her heart rate speeding up. Mine did as well. I wished I could make this a bit easier on her.
As she raised her head to the moon, her body pulsed and the bark of a wolf came to our ears. We watched as her body's bones began breaking and re-shifting. Groans and grunts left her as she felt on all fours. Her heart rate had picked up in order to beat at the rhythm of her wolf. With the blanket covering most of her, I couldn't tell if her fur was sprouting, but judging by her arched back, I'll say that it was.
The scent of her wolf's mixed with her unique scent. Her head was lowered. As she turned her head to face us, her eyes were a bright amber. As if they were glowing instead of flashing. A deep growl left her. As she shook the blanket from her body, the shiny black fur of her wolf emerged.
She was the size of a dire wolf instead of the normal 4'3' height of a werewolf. All in all, she was my perfect mate.
"Looks like she pulled through just fine," Romulus said. "She's smaller. Must be the blood running through her veins."
Moving forward, I approached her. She looked back at me strangely. Kneeling in front of her, I reached forward to touch her only to receive a low growl.
Laughter drew my attention to her father. "You know better than to touch an alpha wolf right after their first shift."
Oh, right. I lowered my hand. We stared at each other. There was no doubt that she recognized me, but she must have been feeling confused by this whole thing. Getting used to all the new sensations that came with being a wolf was a bit overwhelming. Not to mention scary.
I watched her eyes seem to relax from the tense filled glare to the familiar warm gaze. She then looked down at her paws. A wolfish shrill left her. She spinned on her feet trying to see the tail she realized was there. The sight brought another smile to my face.
"You should take her on a run." Romulus suggested coming to stand beside me.
I looked up at him. "Do you really want me to do that? It is your right to take her on her first run."
He looked down at me. "It's fine with me. Times have changed after all. Besides, I think she'll have a better time with you than her old man."
I studied the older alpha a moment before nodding my acceptance. Amelia was too busy trying to fully see herself to notice that I had stood up and shedding my clothes. The transformation came easy for me. With my eyes closed, I gave my mind over to my wolf. When I opened my eyes, Amelia's golden ones were watching me.
Romulus chuckled once more. "You two have fun. I'll be following on my two feet. Your mother would kill me if I let you get lost in this forest. Even though you have your mate right there."
Neither one of us was paying attention. We were busy staring at each other. I could see my white wolf staring back at me in her eyes. I barked which startled her.
"Don't do that!" Amelia said loud and clear.
I allowed my tongue to fall to the side of my mouth. "You were staring."
Her mouth parted in surprise. "You heard that? Wait, I can hear you?!"
"Yes. Werewolves can telepathically communicate with other werewolves. It's as easy as that."
"But I thought only pack members could do that. The things I've read says so."
"That is known as a pack bond. It's not communication based really, but the minds of the pack do work together. I'll explain later. For now, let's take you on your first run in that form." I moved by her, brushing my side against hers. The tingles that followed confirmed our bond. With a bark, I took off.
I hear her following after me moments later. So my mate is faster than I first thought. Interesting, since this is her first time adapting to her new body.
We ran through the forest at a steady speed. I didn't want to exhaust her nor push her. This was a time for her to get used to her body and senses. Like a Trevino, she moved like she was one with the forest. It was a beautiful sight to see really.
After about an hour of free running, I decided we should take a break. I came to a step near a small stream of flowing water. Looking at her, I noticed she was panting. The water should help. I allowed her to take the first drink.
Just as I took a step toward the water, a force knocked into me. When I fell to the ground, I was back up in an instant, growling at the tawny brown wolf. Amelia had turned around at this point, baring her teeth. I wasn't going to let her fight for two reasons. One being she lacks the experiences. The other was: this wolf was Alaric.
