Chapter Six

She's a werewolf.

The only question is: does she realize she's one?

She showed no signs of being aware. What's more, she doesn't seem to belong to either pack.

As students passed me on their way to class, I went through the possibilities of how she is a werewolf. It's clear her mother is a human. Her father on the other hand could be a werewolf, but that's impossible.

No werewolf would go against law and interbreed with a human. Which brings me to my next thought: turned into one.

She didn't show the symptoms of a turned werewolf. No, if anything, she was almost normal.

Looking at my watch on my right wrist, I noticed it was two minutes until the bell rang. Looking into the classroom, the majority of my class were already inside. I went to pull the door closed.

"Wait!," said an out of breath voice.

Pausing, I saw her running toward me. "What are you doing here?" I asked the moment she was close enough.

"I'm going to class," she said while trying to catch her breath.

"I didn't expect you back so soon, Amelia." I couldn't believe she was back.

"I'm feeling much better now." She casted her gaze downward. A light pink colored her cheeks.

"Well come on in. We have work to do."

She looked up, a brightness in her face. Nodding, she entered the classroom and went to her seat. Pulling the door closed, I turned to my class.

"Alright class, let's begin."

It was after classes for the day that I stumbled upon my mate. I was just rounding a corner when I saw her. Stepping back behind the wall, I watched as a male student approached her.

I didn't want another incident like with the Harris Groundhog boy to happen. So, I stayed and watched.

The guy that approached her was Dean Foreman. He was in my four period class. An average student who was on the football team. He excels at strategy and math, but he lacks the mind to study literature. Which was normal for most male students.

Tuning into their conversation, I rested my back against the wall. I had to know what started her first phase of shifting. I peeped around the wall.

"Hey Amelia," Dean said as he scratched the back of his head with his right hand.

Amelia gave him a smile. "Dean, hi."

Her smile warmed my insides. I found myself smiling.

"I was wondering if you wanted to go to the welcome back dance Jack is throwing Friday."

A frown formed on her face. "I don't think I'm cut out for going this year, Dean."

"Stick with me and I'll make sure you have a good time." He leaned toward her, wiggling his eyebrows. "Come on, it's the first party of the year."

She brushed a loose strand of her curly, black hair behind her ear. "I don't know."

"Look I really like you and I want to take you to the party. Your friend,  Clara, will be going."

"Really?"

"Yeah, Jack's bringing her. She actually told me you were single."

"Oh." There seem to be a surprised notch in her tone, but it was clear Dean didn't pick up on it.

"So will you come with me?"

She was quiet for a moment. I could feel my own heart pounding in my chest. What would she say?

"Ok. I'll go with you." She smiled and took his hand when he offered it to her.

As much as it annoyed me that she was going out with another guy, I knew I had no right being jealous. This was her senior year, and she should experience everything this last year had to offer her. Besides, in time, she will eventually seek me out.

I'm her chosen partner after all.

Pushing off the wall, I turned back the way I came. Going out in a different direction to the parking lot, I got into my car and headed home.

I was exhausted by the time I reached home, but I still had enough energy left to have a discussion with my brother.

Walking into the beautifully designed log house, pieces of conversation filled the hall. I followed the noise, which led me into a living room that resembled a hunter's dem. It had the antlers of some rather large deer hanging on the wall to the far side. A fireplace sat to the right of the wall with the trophy antlers. No fire was lit however. Then, my gaze settled on the long sofa to the left. On that sofa sat Jace and his best friend, Alex.

They were so engrossed in the video game they were playing. Walking up behind them, I looked over their heads to see that they were playing one of those all-out fighting battle games.

Turning my right hand over, I used my knuckles to knock on Jace's head. "Where's Edward?"

"Don't know," Jace smirked at the game and turned his controller to the side. "Almost…"

I frowned and looked back at the game. It seemed like Jace was winning, but I couldn't really tell with the colorful graphics.

"Surprise sucker!" Alex pressed in a combination of buttons that caused his character to unleash a energy blast on Jace’s character.

Jace groaned. "Crybaby. Surprising me like that all because I had got the drop on you."

They continued playing when their characters reappeared on the platform.

"Alpha said he was going out back," Alex said.

I turned to go look for him. Behind me, the good friends continued to shout and boost about who had who. Walking toward the back, some pack members were hanging out in the kitchen. Reaching the back door, I side stepped a werewolf in her wolf form coming in when I pulled the back door open.

The sun's rays hit me right in the eyes the moment I stepped outside. Grunts and groans sound right in front of me. Once my eyes adjusted I spotted Edward. He was twisting the arm of another pack member.

I recognized the guy whose arm was being twisted as Ryan. He was one of Edward's best warriors.

"Uncle, uncle! You win." Ryan was hitting the ground with his other hand.

I watched my brother release him. His signature smirk appeared on his face as he moved aside.

Walking up to him, I arched an eyebrow. "Aren't you two a little too old to be wrestling?"

"I had to remind Ryan who's top around here." Edward rolled his right shoulder.

Ryan sat up, sitting with his legs crossed on the ground. "I did have you there for a moment. Did you really have to twist it?"

Edward chuckled darkly before turning his gaze on me. "Want to give it a go?"

"Wrestling with you, yeah I'm good." I shook my head.

"It'll be like childhood when we were just messing around."

"We're not kids anymore. Fighting with you will turn into a real match. Plus I'm not getting my outfit dirty again."

"Alright, alright, what are you doing here?" He chuckled once more.

That's my big brother for ya. He knows me the best. "It's about my mate."

Ryan's eyes lit up. "You found your mate? Congrats man."

"Thanks, Ry."

"What about her?" Edward offered his hand to Ryan, who took it and pulled himself up.

"Well…" I studied my brother's face for a few seconds. "She is one of us - a werewolf. "

Many emotions flashed in Edward's face. But I caught the expression of shock for the most part.

"She is in the beginning stage, but I'm sure. She fainted the other day. I think her wolf was reacting to something or me."

"She doesn't have a pack?"

"No. I don't think she's aware that she is a werewolf."

"And you said her name was…"

"I didn't, but her name is Amelia O'Connell."

Edward looked at Ryan, who nodded. "I'll have Amy check into Amelia O'Connell. If my hunch is correct, well let's see first."

"What does that mean?" I asked him.

"It means," Edward placed a hand on my shoulder. "That I want to look into some things. In the meantime, tell her you're her mate and that she is a were."

"What do I do if she shifts?"

"Watch her carefully. Your responsibility now is to make sure your mate doesn't expose us and to see that she makes it through her first change."

"Werewolves usually make it through. Look I don't know what you're thinking Ed, but I don't like to be kept in the dark." Just what was he talking about?

Edward dropped his hand from my shoulder. "Just give me some time and I'll explain it to you later. Watch your mate. That's an order."

Frowning, I couldn't snag the feeling that Edward was keeping something from me. That he knew something I wasn't even aware of. Whichever the case, I will watch my mate, Alpha's orders or not.
