Chapter 4 Captain America
"I was just seeing if there was anything useful on Bucky here," Skye said, glancing to her left.
I smiled, glad she was doing her best to find information for a guy she'd only met a day ago. "Did you find anything that we didn't already know?"
Skye shook her head. "Not here, but... I think I saw him at the Washington Monument yesterday before I met you. I should have told you before but I wasn't sure..."
"It's fine," I said quickly. "I'm still a little surprised that you're trying to find him for me."
Skye smiled. "I trust people a little too quickly sometimes."
I checked my watch, more out of habit than any other reason. "I should introduce you to the rest of the team. If you're going to be hanging around you'll want to know everyone and everyone will want to know another computer person besides Pepper for when she's not around."
Skye's smile grew. "I don't suppose you brought a car?"
"No I didn't. I drove my motorcycle. Lucky two people can ride it."
Her eyes gleamed. "Lucky indeed. Motorcycles are fun."
I led the way through the museum with Skye at my side. I held the door open when we reached the exit. She smiled and walked outside, scanning the streets for something. Either she hadn't found whatever she was looking for, or she had and was satisfied with what she saw, because she didn't object when I gestured for her to get on the back of my motorcycle.
She climbed on the back and wrapped her arms around my chest, resting her chin on my shoulder to see the road ahead. "Ready?" I asked, turning my head a bit to see her.
She nodded. "When you are."
I started the engine and started driving toward S.H.I.E.L.D. Skye took her head off my shoulder about half way there and looked up at the sky.
I parked in front of the doors, where I always did, and turned the motorcycle off. Skye got off and ran a hand through her messy hair. She turned toward the door and stopped. "Captain..."
I slipped my keys into my pocket and turned to her. "Please call me Steve."
"Alright. Steve... Did you by any chance..." she seemed to be struggling to finish her question.
I walked to her side and looked in the same direction as her. Bucky sat on the bench next to the door looking down at the ground the same way he used to when he was nervous. I started toward him slowly, unsure of how he would react to seeing me. "Buck?"
Bucky's head shot up and his eyes flicked to Skye. "Steve."
Skye stood awkwardly off to the side. She was spinning a small computer card in her right hand. She gave me an apologetic look. "Buck, I was going to give this to you later but since you're here..." She walked forward and handed Bucky the card.
Bucky took it. "What's on this one?"
"More old pictures I found..."
I met Skye's eyes. She looked ashamed, but I couldn't figure out why. "Skye," I said. "What's wrong?"
Skye looked away and didn't respond. Bucky got up and put his metal hand on her shoulder. "Skye?"
"Should I have said something?" she asked quietly.
I frowned. "About what?"
Bucky's expression went from confused to pained. "Me. About me. Right?"
Skye nodded. "Yes. About you."
"I'm willing to bet he told you not to," I said, giving Bucky a smile. "That's something you would do. I think I should be amazed that I didn't notice."
Bucky glanced inside. "I should go. I really don't want anyone but you two to know I was even here." He walked away, melting into the crowds on the sidewalk.
Skye sighed. "So you aren't mad at me? That's pretty amazing."
"Not really. I trust almost as quickly as you do. Come on, you've got a team to meet."
"That I do," Skye readjusted the strap on her bag and opened the door. "After you Cap."
I gave her a reproachful look. "How many times will I need to ask you to call me Steve?"
"Until I get it stuck in my head or I go insane."
I rolled my eyes at her and led the way through the headquarters. The only problem was that I had no idea where any of the Avengers were. We came across Sam by chance on the way up the stairs. He saluted to me and grinned. "Hey there Captain!"
"Hello Sam," I said, returning his smile. "We've got another team member I want you to meet. Skye, this is Sam Wilson. Sam, this is Skye Allen."
Skye shook Sam's hand. "A pleasure to meet you Falcon."
I looked at her in surprise and Sam grinned. "I think we have a hacker on our hands. By the surprised look on your face, Captain, I assume you didn't tell her that."
Skye bowed. "I promise that I keep the information for myself, except for some of the old pictures I've found. I've shared them with a friend."
Sam shrugged. "I don't think old pictures will do any harm. They're just... pictures."
I got the feeling that I knew the friend Skye was sharing the pictures with. I smiled. "We have the rest of the team to introduce you to." I continued up the stairs.
"I'll call you if I ever need some information found!" Sam called after us.
"That was kind of the idea! See you around Falcon!" Skye responded.
Bruce was so involved in what he was doing on the computer that Skye voted for not bothering him. Thor, Clint, Tony, Natasha, Pepper, T'Challa, Wanda, Vision, and Janet, were all, oddly enough, in the same place. Pepper wasn't the happiest to hear that we had a hacker on the team. Tony was equally annoyed to discover that Skye was a hacker. Everyone else was of the mindset that if she could prove herself trustworthy, she could stay. Clint took a near instant liking to Skye.
In the four minutes we were in the room with most of the team, Skye had managed to convince Clint to teach her archery and made a possibly permanent enemy of Tony. It was clear they despised each other and the rest of the team had taken notice.
"Let's go Skye," I said. I didn't want to end up needing to break up a technological argument between two geniuses.
Skye shot Tony one last glare, which he returned triumphantly. Skye huffed and walked out the door. I followed her, closing the door quietly. "What was that about?" I demanded.
Skye's eyes sparked with determination. "He said that hackers couldn't be trusted. I'm going to prove him wrong," she growled.
"He's hacked a few computers himself," I said. "I think he just forgot about that detail."
Skye glanced to the door. "I'm going to be the best computer person you've ever had. Even if the team breaks apart, I'll always be on your side."
