Chapter 3 Winter Soldier

Is it though? XD

Skye: I had something of an awkward day. I'm on my way back to the hotel. Use the back door where there aren't any cameras, the one in front caught you.

I frowned at my phone before pushing it back in my pocket. What had she hacked into the cameras for? The only reason I could think of was that she just wanted to hack into cameras for the fun of it, but I got the feeling that wasn't it.

I was only a couple of blocks away from the hotel Skye was staying in. I guessed that she was likely already there, since I'd apparently gotten the text fifteen minutes ago. I started walking, turning down the street on the right side of the building, slipping through the back door and going up the stairs to room one hundred seven.

I knocked on the door, forgetting Skye had given me a key. The door opened and Skye stepped to the side. "Hey Buck. You could've unlocked it yourself."

I walked inside and closed the door. "I forgot I had the key," I said, sitting down on the bed. "Did you find anything?"

Skye handed me a tablet. "Keep that. I'm sending all of the information I find to it. The man in charge is Steve Rogers, or Captain America. He wanted me too look for stuff on you."

I stopped. "So is that why you hacked the camera in front of the hotel?"

She nodded. "That's all I showed him, but I found a lot more. You were brainwashed by Hydra, fought with Natasha Romanoff, Steve Rogers, Nick Fury, and Sam Wilson. Another thing you might like..." She smiled slightly. "I found some old pictures. They're all on the tablet. Your name is James Buchanan Barnes."

I turned on the tablet, figuring it must be like my phone. "I like Bucky better," I murmured.

Skye's smile grew a little. "Good, 'cause I'm not calling you James." She tucked her hair behind her ear and turned to her computers.

I opened up the pictures folder Skye had set up and scrolled through them. They showed me in a military uniform. In most of them I was standing with Steve, a cheesy grin on my face. I smiled as memories of all the laughs I'd had with Steve came back. One of the pictures was me with a perfectly straight face that was clearly forced. A caption typed along the bottom read 'Sergeant James Barnes'. The next picture was one of Steve, a perfectly serious expression on his face, the caption read, 'Captain Steve Rogers otherwise known as Captain America'.

   "Is that helping?"

Without thinking I whipped around and swung my right arm back. Skye blocked expertly and scooted back on the bed. "Sorry. Did I scare you?"

I was glad I hadn't spun the other way and hit her with my metal arm. "Yeah. Just a bit. Try not to do that in the future."

"No promises, but I will try," Skye grinned. "So... is it helping?"

I looked back down at the tablet. "Yes. I remember more than I did this morning. Thank you."

   Skye yawned. "No problem."

I turned the tablet off and set it on the table. "I'll let you sleep."

"You can stay," Skye yawned again. "There's a cot in the closet, or there's the recliner in the corner. Neither are very comfortable, but it's better than outside on the ground or a bench."

I stopped right in front of the door. Did I trust her enough to stay? The offer was too good to refuse, but even still.

She really didn't seem like the kind of person who would kill me in my sleep. "Thank you again," I said.

Skye rolled her eyes at me. "Quit thanking me. It's unnecessary and mildly annoying." She turned on the lamp next to the bed and glanced at the wall next to me. "Could you turn of the light please? Thanks."

I turned off the light and sat down in the recliner, leaning back to get more comfortable. Skye turned off the lamp as soon as I was settled in. I heard her move around for a minute or so before the room was silent, the only sound coming from the air conditioner.

I woke to a quiet click. I opened my eyes and saw Skye coming in with a tray of food. She set the tray down on the desk next to me without a word and went into the bathroom.

I picked the donuts off of the tray and ate them quickly. Donuts made a better breakfast than any other food on Earth.

Skye came out of the bathroom still wearing her jeans, but her shirt was now brown and read 'Tech Support' underneath that there were three computer keys. CTRL ALT DEL. I smiled, recognizing the three keys that were needed to close programs on a computer. I knew that much.

"Where are you going to spend the day?" she asked, pulling her hair back into a ponytail.

"Wandering around and avoiding people who look like they care about where I go," I said, taking a muffin off of the tray.

Skye tilted her head at me. "Steve didn't give me any specific time I had to be at the headquarters, so I'm going to show you something."

I frowned. "Where are we going?"

"The museum. You're going to want to disguise yourself though. Steve recognized you in the camera footage yesterday."

I shook my head. "I don't have any other clothes."

Skye frowned and rummaged through her bags. She produced a dark blue baseball cap. "There. This should do the trick!" She threw the hat at me.

I put it on my head and Skye nodded proudly. "That works fine. Lets go. I'm glad the museum is so close. I refused to rent a car."

   "You're not from around here?"

I had assumed that she lived close-by. It was an odd assumption to make, but I'd made it anyway.

Skye grinned again and led me out the door. "I'm from New York City. I'm part of the team at S.T.A.R. Labs. They're building a Particle Accelerator. I was helping until the resident tech wizard, Cisco, told me to take a walk. I've used the plane a couple of times, but otherwise I'm walking."

   "You really took him seriously?"

"I did, and I can't wait to see the expression on his face when I tell him I never rented a car or hitchhiked."

Skye walked like a person on a mission, which I guess she was. She pointed to the museum up ahead. "It's free on weekends. Hopefully they didn't take it down..."

She led me inside and through many hallways to a dark room filled with things from World War II. It was all about Steve, except for the short wall Skye was headed for. It was me.

Skye stood off to the side and let me read it.

One part I guessed would be stuck in my mind forever. Steve's best friend, Sergeant James Barnes, whom he always called Bucky, fell to his death above a ravine. He and Steve were trying to get back into a helicopter. The bar James was hanging from broke off and he fell into the frozen river below.

"Buck!" Skye hissed, gently tapping my shoulder.

I looked at her and she pointed urgently over to the opposite side of the room. Steve was looking at the uniforms we'd worn. A young boy noticed him at the same time Steve noticed him. He put a finger to his lips and smiled.

   "We should leave," Skye whispered.

"Mhmm," I hummed. "Out we go."

I had just gone around a corner when I heard Steve say, "Hey Skye! Fancy seeing you here!"

My phone buzzed and I pulled it out. It was from Skye. Go on without me. "Hey!" Skye said, her eyes flickered to where I stood. "Came to check the exhibit out?"

   GET YOUR BUTT OUT!

I smiled and started back for the door again as Steve asked, "So... anything on our mysterious friend?"

Whoa! Two chapters in one day. *fist pump* I'm on a roll! Don't expect this to happen often though. XD

Hope you all enjoyed the chapter. If there are any characters you want me to add, besides The Flash and (for those of you reading Speed Demons) The Spark. Don't you worry! Falcon, Hawkeye, and Black Widow will all be showing up soon. Thor too, once I know more about him. Apparently he makes single words longer than they should be? Is that right?

May the wind blow strong in your sails! Have a good day Avengers! (I've got a new catchphrase :D)
