Chapter 16 Captain America

Skye looked like she had more purpose now that Sam had talked to her. I didn't know what Sam had said.

Skye was whisper singing a song. I only caught one part, "They can take my heart, they can take my breath, when they pry it from my cold dead chest."

She jogged over to Bucky and gave him a quick hug. "Don't kill anyone," she said.

Bucky smiled and nodded. "I won't try. I promise."

I looked away, over the edge of the parking ramp. Clint and Wanda would be in position any time now. Bucky and Sam were just leaving. Skye placed an earpiece in her ear and started off, talking quietly to someone.

Scott had shrunk down and was hanging onto the seam in my left shield strap.

   "Ready Scott?" I asked.

"Ready as ever Captain," Scott replied.

I took a deep breath and started down the steps. I wasn't in any hurry.

There was a low whoosh and a dull thump as someone landed behind me. I knew it wasn't Sam, and hoped it wasn't Tony or Rhodey. I turned around to look and stopped dead in shock.

I knew the silver metal suit well. It had a blue tint to it. A sheen, you could say. It looked much like Tony's suit, only it was made for a woman.

The helmet folded back to show long, almost white hair and piercing green eyes. Sheen grinned and bowed. "At your service Captain."

I smiled. "Hello Sheen. Are you here with Tony?"

Sheen's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Of course not. I'm your second in command. You honestly think I wouldn't be on your side?"

Her helmet unfolded again, covering her face. Her hands and boots glowed. "You've got more help from the sky."

I turned back around and continued walking toward the planes. I knew that would be where Tony and Rhodey would be waiting, along with whoever was left on his side.

When I reached a point just past the suspended hallway leading to the plane, Tony and Rhodey both landed in front of me. Without looking I knew that Natasha was behind me. Tony's helmet folded back.

"Wow," Tony said with a glare. "It's weird how you run into people at the airport." He looked over at Rhodey. "Don't you think that's weird?"

   "Definitely weird," Rhodey responded.

"Hear me out Tony," I said. "That doctor is behind all of this."

There was a metallic thump. I looked up and saw T'Challa in his Black Panther suit falling toward the ground. He landed in a crouch and stood up slowly. "Captain," he said, briefly noticing my presence.

   "Your highness."

Sheen landed behind me and I saw Tony glare past me. "You know, Ross gave me thirty-six hours to bring you in twenty-four hours ago."

"You're after the wrong guy Tony," Sheen growled.

Tony rolled his eyes. "This gets tiresome so quickly." He cupped his hands around his mouth. "Anderouse!"

A spiderweb shot from the sky and latched onto my shield, pulling it out of my hands. I hoped Scott was hanging on. The web ripped off my shield and wrapped around my hands.

A short figure landed on the pile of boxes behind Tony and Rhodey. He was dressed in a red and blue skintight suit that covered his face as well. Black lines that represented webs, criss-crossed on the red.

   "Good job kid," Tony said.

The boy straightened proudly. "Thanks! I could have stuck the landing a little better, it's just... new suit." He paused for a second. "I-it's nothing Mr. Stark, thank you."

Tony looked like he was a little exasperated. "Yeah we don't need to start a conversation right now."

The boy ignored him. "Ca-Cap-Cap'n," he said, giving me a salute. "Big fan... Spiderman."

   "Yeah that's-" Tony started.

"Hey everyone," Spiderman waved a bit.

I smiled. Tony had recruited an amusing member.

"Right. Just... good job," Tony said quickly, before Spiderman could say anything more.

I held up both my hands, hoping Clint would get the point.

An arrow flew through the air, cutting the web. It wasn't black though, it was green. I didn't take any notice of it.

"You're up Lang," I said loudly, making sure my voice would carry far enough.

"Uh guys," Spiderman said nervously. "Something's- Ah!"

Scott grew to full size, doing a flip and landing on the ground next to me. He held out my shield with a smile. "I believe this is yours Captain America."

"Rhodey, want to take Cap?" Tony asked, shooting into the sky.

"On it," Rhodey blasted up as well. "Got two in the terminal, Wilson and Barnes."

"Barnes is mine!" T'Challa said. He started running toward the entrance to the airport.

I threw my shield and it caught him in the back. The ricochet brought it back to my arm. Scott had run off toward Natasha.

T'Challa leaped to his feet and swiped at me with his claws. I ducked and raised my shield. He scratched it, cutting a good sized gash in the vibranium. He grabbed the top of my shield and started forcing it down.

"Sorry Cap," Rhodey said. "This won't kill you, but it ain't gonna tickle either." He raised a glowing stick and dove down.

T'Challa jumped out of the way and the weapon hit my shield. I swung it around and leaped. I kicked Rhodey in the back and sent him crashing into the ground.

Cars fell from the parking garage surrounded by a glowing red light. I could see Tony out of the corner of my eye, trying to dodge the cars.

"Hey Cap!" Scott shouted. "Heads up!"

He tossed something at me as he stopped at my side. I caught it and looked down. It was a little truck.

Scott held up a small circle with a blue light in the center. "Throw it at this... Now!"

He threw the little disc and I threw the truck. When the connected the truck grew, spinning end over end.

"Oh come on!" Rhodey shouted, backing up.

The truck hit the ground and exploded in a huge fireball.

I gave Scott a reproachful look. He stared at the flaming remains of the truck. "Oh... I thought that was a water truck... sorry."

I started running toward the hanger with the quinjet with Scott right behind me.

Clint and Wanda ran up behind the two of us and I waved Bucky and Sam over. "Come on!" I called.

There was a high whistling sound. A yellow stream of light shone down from the sky, cutting a line in the pavement.

My team skidded to a stop. Vision stopped his ray of light and landed behind Natasha, T'challa, Spiderman, Rhodey and Tony.

I could see the glint of Skye's armor enter the hanger.

"What do we do Cap?" Sam asked.

Sheen dropped down next to me, taking two steps to catch her balance. Her head turned toward me.

   "We fight," I said.

We started walking forward. I could hear Sheen panting as we broke into a jog. There was a whoosh as she took of, followed closely by a series of clicks and whirs that signaled Sam's wings opening.

Tony, Rhodey, and Vision all took to the sky as well. Tony came down toward me. I raised my shield and he swerved to avoid it.

He punched, I blocked. When he fired a laser at me I deflected it off my shield and it hit him in the chest.

Sheen dove from behind me and crashed into Tony at full force, knocking him down. "Go Captain! Get to the quinjet."

Tony threw her off and started attacking her instead.

I hesitated a second before I took off toward the quinjet. Spiderman landed on top of a van, looking down at me. For a kid, he looked pretty menacing.

"There's a lot going on here that you don't understand," I called up to him.

The white eyes on his mask narrowed. "Mr. Stark said you'd say that."

He shot a web at my chest, I blocked it with my shield and felt another web hit my ankle. I really needed a bigger shield. That or I needed to protect my legs better.

I flew forward. Before I could completely process what Spiderman was doing, I was flying the opposite direction. I hit the support for the suspended hallway and fell to the ground.

"He also said to go for your legs!" Spiderman said proudly.

I smiled and grabbed my shield. "I guess he had a point," I muttered. I threw my shield at the same support I'd crashed into.

The support gave way. Spiderman caught it, managing to hold it up.

"You've got heart kid," I said. "Where you from?"

   Spiderman grunted. "Queens."

I laughed a little at that. "Brooklyn."

I turned and kept running toward the quinjet. Bucky almost crashed into me as he ran around a pile of crates. He managed to jump out of the way in time to avoid collision.

   "You alright Buck?" I asked.

Bucky was breathing hard but he nodded. "Never better."

"Get to the jet Steve!" Sam said, swooping over us with Rhodey right after him. "We need a diversion. Something big."

"Leave that to me!" Scott said. "I can't hold it for long. Run on my signal."

"What's the signal?" Skye asked. "I've got the quinjet fired up."

Scott suddenly appeared supersized, holding onto Rhodey's boot. He started laughing.

"I'm guessing that's the signal," Bucky said helpfully.

Skye started laughing. "I hacked into Tony's comm system. He just asked if anyone on his team has any shocking hidden abilities they wanted to share."

Bucky and I continued our sprint toward the hanger. Scott shouted something I didn't catch just before a yellow laser cut part way through a tall pole next to the hanger.

"Uh oh," Skye said. "I hope you two are almost here!"

The top of the tower turned bright red and slowed down by a large amount. Bucky and I were almost inside the hanger when the tower continued falling at normal speed. We both dove forward, barely avoiding getting crushed.

"Guys," Skye warned. "Natasha- never mind. You see her."

Natasha stood right in front of us, her arm pointed at one of us. I couldn't tell who.

   "Natasha-" I started.

She shot a blue ball of electricity between Bucky and I, making both of us jump. I looked back and saw T'Challa on the ground.

   "Go," Natasha said quietly.

I nodded, sprinting the rest of the way to the quinjet. The door was still open and I leaped inside with Bucky right behind me.

Skye sat in the co-pilot seat. Half of the main window was covered with a camera that must have been placed in Sam's goggles. Skye had the engine running and everything prepped for takeoff.

I quickly sat down in the pilot's seat. Bucky sat down behind me as I guided the quinjet up and out of the hanger.

Skye tapped a couple of placed on the screen. "No..." she whispered, switching to her tablet. "Come on Vision. Really?"

   "What?" I asked.

"Vision hit Rhodey's... power... source," Skye said through gritted teeth. She typed something that I couldn't see.

I glanced at her half of the main window. The camera showed that Sam was diving down toward Rhodey, whose suit was smoking. When Rhodey almost hit the ground all of the jets fired, slowing him down, but not stopping him.

I turned my attention back to flying as Skye sighed. "Stupid technology," she growled. "Why does it have to fail all the time?"

I couldn't think of any answer so I didn't say anything. The left side of the window suddenly changed to clear.

"Tony killed the camera," Skye said. She winced. "He must have hit Sam with some sort of shock wave."

"We'll save them as soon as we're finished with Zemo," I said.

Skye's eyes closed and she leaned back. "That's good."
