Chapter 12 The Hacker
Aiden and I had followed the car that had taken Bucky, Sam, Steve, and T'Challa. It had gone to the airport.
We now stood in front of Tony's Quinjet. Tony and Rhodey stood in front of us. They were both in full battle gear.
Tony glared at me. "Why should we let you on board again?"
I rolled my eyes. "Because I haven't hacked anything in the immediate area. You can check. I swear I won't hack the plane or your suits if you let us on."
Tony's eyes narrowed. Rhodey spoke before Tony could say anything. "I think we can trust her," he said.
"Thank you!"
Tony huffed. "Fine. But if you hack anything from my Quinjet..." he let that statement hang in a threatening way.
I held up my hands. "I already swore I wouldn't. Please don't tell Cap, Buck, Sam, and T'Challa we're on board though okay?"
Tony waved a hand and turned toward the Quinjet. "Fine, fine. Get on."
Aiden and I climbed up the temporary stairs onto the Quinjet. When we were alone I grinned triumphantly at Aiden. "I told you-"
"Don't," Aiden interrupted. "Don't rub in that you were right and I wasn't. I thought he didn't like you enough to let you on."
"I don't think he does, but I swore not to hack anything so it was as good an offer as any," I smiled. "ButIdidtellyouso," I added quickly before he could object.
He rolled his eyes and sat down in one of the only chairs in the room.
The room was small with only four chairs and a coffee table. There was a couch in the corner that I was surprised Aiden hadn't taken before me.
I walked over and sat down on the couch. I rested my head on one armrest and propped my feet up on the other. I'd flown so many times recently I was amazed I wasn't jet-lagged. Then again I always slept on planes. Quinjets were no exception. Within minutes I was sleeping.
"Up you get Shotgun," Aiden's voice said. He poked my side. "We've arrived in Berlin and our trio is out of sight."
I opened my eyes. "Why do you call me Shotgun?"
Aiden smiled and pulled me to my feet. "Because you're like one where your friends are concerned. Not to mention you're an excellent shot."
Aiden led the way to the outside door of the Quinjet. I fell into step beside him as he headed toward the building the jet had been parked behind.
There was no security at the door. Aiden stopped and looked sideways at me. "This is where we part ways for a while?" he asked.
I shrugged. "If you want to leave." I looked up at the building. If I was right, Steve and Sam would be with Tony and Buck would be somewhere else. "If you are leaving, I'll find some excuse to come to Chicago soon. I'm sure somebody around there would need some help."
Aiden smirked. "I might need help."
"Ha! That's highly unlikely."
"Well then," Aiden handed me a phone. "Use that to contact me and for goodness sake don't hack into my phone to say hello."
"Party pooper." I took the phone and put it in my bag. "No promises."
"Of course not. See you Chicago eventually... or New York." He waved and jogged away.
I waved and made an amused note that the light changed as he approached the intersection. Horns blared as all four directions of traffic tried to move at the same time.
I turned back to the door and walked through. Nobody gave me a second look as I headed for the stairs that lead down. I assumed they would be keeping Buck in the basement.
I looked through the windows on each door I passed. I almost walked right by one in particular. I stopped and looked again. Buck was sitting in a reinforced box, probably made of bullet proof glass. He was held in place by a metal harness type thing. I pressed my ear to the door so I could hear what the man interviewing Buck was saying.
"Your name is James Barnes correct?" the man asked.
Buck didn't respond. He was looking at his knees.
"So James, why did you blow up that building? Hmm?"
Buck looked up. "My name's Bucky," he growled.
"Ah, well then... Bucky... Why did you blow up that building?"
The lights went out. The red emergency lights flickered on, making the room look eerie. Buck glanced at the ceiling.
The interviewer got up and opened a dark red book and started reading. "Longing."
Buck's gritted his teeth and pulled against the metal holding him in.
"Rusted... Seventeen..."
Even through the door I could hear the metal creaking.
"Daybreak... Furnace... Nine..."
The section holding his metal arm broke of completely. Buck's eyes were wild as he yanked at the other parts. I tried to open the door, but of course, it was locked.
"Benign... Homecoming..."
Buck pulled off the rest of the harness that bound him. He broke the glass and jerked the door off. He stood right in front of the man with a blank expression.
"One... Freight car." The man closed the book and looked into Buck's eyes. "Soldier?"
Buck took a deep breath, his eyes still blank. "Ready to comply," he said.
I backed away from the door. I have to find Steve, I thought frantically. I ran down the hallway into the larger room filled with cubicles. I started toward the door that led to the stairs when Sam and Steve both burst through the door.
"Skye!" Steve stopped in surprise. "How did you- Why are you-"
"No time," I said quickly. "The guy who was supposed to be interrogating Buck did something that brainwashed him. The door was locked but-"
The door down the hall exploded out and crashed against the opposite wall. The man who had brainwashed Buck ran away from us, Sam started running after him. Buck stalked out of the door and turned toward us.
Steve grabbed my shoulders. "Run. Get out of here. I don't want you getting hurt."
I met his gaze, his expression was pleading. I glanced back toward Buck, Sam had somehow managed to get by and disappeared around the corner at the end of the hall. Buck was still coming for us.
"Skye. Please?" Steve's voice brought me back to the present.
I nodded. "Yeah, off I go."
I ducked under his arm and slipped out the door. I started running up the stairs as the sound of fighting started below me. I heard Steve saying something, but couldn't make out what it was.
I made it up ten levels before I heard the sound of a door slamming echoed up the stairs. I leaned over the railing and peered down.
Buck stomped up the stairs. Steve didn't follow him. I watched for a couple seconds to try and calm my worried mind. What had happened? Where was Steve?
I continued up the stairs. I found a door that led outside. I opened it and slipped through. A short set of stairs led down to a balcony. Tony, Sharon, and Natasha were all standing on the balcony. They all looked up when I came out.
"Skye!" Natasha walked quickly to the base of the stairs. "Are you alright?"
I went down the stairs, skipping every second one, and landed next to her. "I think so. I wouldn't be if Cap hadn't made me leave."
"What's going on?" Tony asked, his left hand just over the watch on his right wrist.
"The guy interrogating Buck said a series of words and Buck went nuts. Steve made me leave so I wouldn't get hurt but he wasn't following Buck up the stairs," I said.
I walked away from the stairs and leaned against one of the tables. I wished I could do something helpful.
I heard the door open and turned to look as Buck vaulted over the railing on the stairs and started attacking Tony. He had a gun, which I had no idea where it had come from. He shot at Tony's forehead, but the bullet sparked off his glasses.
Tony shoved Buck away and slapped his watch. Thin sheets of metal unfolded from inside the watch, forming a dark red metal hand. He tapped the back and there was a dull boom. Buck stopped and shook his head.
Tony frowned and hit something else, but before it could do anything Buck threw him against a wall. Natasha and Sharon started going after him. Buck must have knocked Tony out, because he didn't get up. Sharon flew into another wall and crumpled as well.
Buck shoved Natasha down into a table with his metal hand around her neck.
I started walking toward him. "Buck!" I called.
Buck turned his head and looked at me. There was no recognition in his eyes but he let go of Natasha and lunged at me. I dove to the side. Buck's left hand hit the ground and the concrete cracked. He turned back toward me.
"Bucky remember!" I ducked another punch. "This isn't you!"
Buck whipped around and his metal arm slammed into my chest. I felt a pop and pain laced up my right side. It now hurt to breathe. I grit my teeth and collapsed in a chair.
Buck glanced at me once more and ran up a different set of stairs.

I actually had a hard time writing this. I had to end it here because Skye can no longer follow Cap up to the helipad.
If you have ANY characters you want me to add just let me know and I'll add them.
May the wind blow strong in your sails! (I'm too tired for the rest...)
