part twenty three : real life

It was 5:00 am that Monday morning when Steve dropped off Robin, Willow, and Vickie at school to leave for the senior trip. After a tearful goodbye, Steve left and they met up with Nancy, Fred, and Eddie. They got on the bus to the airport which mostly consisted of everyone napping. At the airport the chaperones handed out everyone's plane tickets and they waited at their gate for boarding.

"I know it's beyond too early for this but I can't wait to go adventuring when we get there," Robin said as she leaned back in her seat.

"Me too," Eddie chimed in, "I've never been outside of Hawkins before."

"So this is like your first vacation ever?" Vickie asked.

Eddie nodded in response.

"Well we have to make it the best vacation ever!" Robin exclaimed, causing the group to giggle.

"What do you guys want to do when we're there?" Nancy asked.

"Willow over here is the expert on Paris, it's like her favorite place," Robin added.

Everyone turned to Willow who had been silent up until now.

"Oh, um...well there's the Eiffel Tower obviously. There's also a million different museums, art, fashion, even a sewer museum."

"So we can live out our Ratatouille dreams!" Robin declared.

"Isn't that famous lock bridge in Paris?" Vickie asked.

"Lock bridge?" Eddie questioned.

"It's the Pont des Arts. Couples write their names or initials on a lock, put it on the bridge, and then throw the key into the river to symbolize eternal love or whatever."

"We should totally do that!" Vickie said.

"Vickie, I'm the only one dating somebody and he isn't even on the trip," Nancy added.

While Vickie and Nancy got into a discussion about how they could get around the issue of them all being single Eddie turned to Willow.

"Eternal love or whatever?" he asked her.

"I don't know, I just don't really believe that such a thing exists. Divorced parents, you know?"

Eddie nodded.

"What about you?"

"What about me?" He smiled.

"Do you think love is real?"

"Definitely."

"And what makes you so sure about that?"

"Because love exists in all forms. Like how you, Robin, and Steve are all best friends. You guys love each other and probably will love each other for a super long time. I don't think love always needs to be romantic in order for it to be meaningful or eternal."

"That's it!" Robin interrupted.

Willow, Eddie, and the rest of the group turned to face her.

"We can write all of our names on a lock to symbolize our senior trip and eternal friendship," she crossed her arms with satisfaction.

"And even though we might not be super close after we graduate and all go our separate ways we will always have this trip together," Vickie added.

The group smiled at each other thinking of what Eddie, Robin, and Vickie had said. This trip would be one of their last memories together as high schoolers. Graduation was right around the corner, things like prom and college decisions were looming ahead but none of that mattered right now. All that mattered was having a big adventure together one last time.
