CHAPTER 44: Cupid's arrow

"I can't believe I'm doing this." I grumble in annoyance as I try to scratch myself in this thick costume.

"Well you are the best pretty lady I've ever met. I'll always be grateful to you for your sacrifice." Jason pinches my cheeks.

It's Friday and Jason has invaded the cafe, driving away all the customers. There's only me, Jason, Eric, Mark, Evan and Arianna. Richard could not join us because his sister was in the town and he had a pregnant Candice.

"I don't understand why did you not hire some artists to do this job?" Ari glares at him.

Eric is scowling at Mark, who is making fun of his costume. Evan is looking out of the door. He's gonna signal us when Kathy is within his eyesight.

The thing is Jason wants to confess his love to Kathy and he has asked us for help. He dragged all of us out of our jobs and made us wear these stupid costumes.

Ari and I are dressed up as heart. Our whole body is covered up, only our faces are popping out from the middle and a small portion of our feet is visible. My costume has written 'I love' and Ari's costume completes the sentence by 'You'.

I think I'm gonna fall anytime soon...

Eric is dressed up as Cupid. His toned muscles are clearly visible and I'm trying my best not to ogle at his body.

Actually Mark was supposed to be dressed as Cupid but then he said that Cupid has black hair. Jason, being a fool, believed him and forced Eric to dress up as Cupid.

Not that I mind...

Mark, on the other hand, pushed the tables aside and decorated the whole cafe with rose petals and balloons. The cafe looks really beautiful and has a romantic setting. He really did a great job.

Jason claps his hand to grab our attention. "Okay kids! Everybody knows their respective roles, right?" The only response he gets is our groans and glares.

This is the fifth time he's saying this!!

"Believe me, it would be a great pleasure to hit with my arrow, Jason." Eric aims at Jason with his bow and arrow, which has heart stickers all over it and shoots.

Jason ducks, saving himself and curses under his breath.

"Save your arrows Cupid!" Mark hits Eric's arm. Eric glares at him.

Ari rolls her eyes at the men's behavior. I notice that her eyes are always lingering at Mark. I slowly scoot over to her and our giant costumes touch each other.

"What's the matter Ari? Got hit by Cupid's arrow?" I tease her and she turns away as an attempt to hide her blush.

"Oh shut up! Do you want me to call your Cupid and ask him to hit you?" She retorts back at me.

"N-No." I mentally slap myself for stammering.

"I knew it. You do want me to call him. Eri-" Evan cuts us off.

"Guys she's here."

Mark switches off the lights and we all go to our positions. We hear the door open.

"Hello? Evan? Anybody?" She calls out in the darkness.

Suddenly the lights switch on and Kathy sees Jason standing in front of her. Her expression turns to shock when she sees Eric standing few feet behind him, half naked, holding a bow. He takes out an arrow, aims at Jason and shoots, hitting straight behind his back.

"I got struck by a Cupid's arrow when I first saw you." Jason says. "At first I thought that having you in my bed would help me get rid of these new feelings but instead they got intensified." Kathy only looks back at him, confusion written all over her face.

"Hours turned into days and days turned into weeks and I felt more crazy about you. At first I got confused, got scared of how to react to it but when I got to know more about you, I realized what these feelings were." And that's our cue.

Ari and I stand behind Kathy and Jason motions her to turn around.

She turns around, looks at us and tries to stifle a laugh. Then she looks at the writings on our costumes and gives Jason a confused look.

"You I love?" She asks him raising her eyebrow.

Oh fuck.

We both exchange our positions but Ari looses her balance, causing her to grab me as her support and we both fall on the floor. Eric and Mark rushes towards us to help us get up.

"Oh fuck." Ari groans in pain as she tries to get up. I'm still lying on the floor but I signal Jason to say the words.

"Katherine.... I... I..." Jason stammers.

"Oh my God! Are you guys okay? Do you want me to call a doctor?" She rushes towards us leaving Jason in a devastated state.

"We'll be fine. We have a man child and a Cupid to help us." I try to joke.

"Wait there's a first aid kit back in the kitchen. Let me go grab it." She walks towards the kitchen but stops in front of Jason.

"And Jason? I love you too." She pecks his cheek and runs to the kitchen.

"Score!" Evan shouts as he gets off the counter and fist pumps Jason, who can't stop smiling.

Ari finally gets up but I'm still trying to get up and fail miserably. I think I'm gonna lay around for a while....

*****

After lying on the floor for almost an hour, I reach back home. I drop on my bed and sigh.

Ari enters the room with two steaming cups of coffee and sits on the bed.

"I'm happy for you guys." I speak as I sit back on the bed and take the cup from her hand.

"What do you mean?"

"You and Kathy. I'm happy for both of you. Kathy found her love of her life and so did you." I take a sip of the coffee.

"What?" She looks at me shocked.

"Don't give me that look, I saw how you were looking at Mark. It was the exact same way Kathy was looking at Jason. It's actually fine. As long as he doesn't break your heart, it's fine."

She sighs. "That's the problem. We have been seeing each other for almost two months and I still don't understand what he wants. At one time he's all flirty and romantic and the next he becomes all possessive, like he doesn't want me to talk to any man on this Earth. It's really confusing." She speaks out all her insecurity to me.

"Talk to him. It helps. It always does." I give her the most basic and useful advice.

"I will. What about you?" She asks me.

"What about me?"

"You and Eric. You guys are going out for the second time tomorrow. Does it means something?" She takes a sip of her coffee.

"It's just another friendly outing. Like I have with you or remember I went out with Candice? It's nothing serious. I think."

"Nothing serious? Beth I've seen how that guy looks at you. It has to be something." She holds my hand.

"I don't know..." Even though I did realize my growing feelings for Eric, it still feels that something is not right. It's like something is missing.

"What do you mean?" She places her cup on the nightstand.

"It's...It's a bit complicated. One moment he acts like he can be the best friend any girl could ask for and the other he makes me feel things I've never felt before. He acts all caring and the next he gives me these butterflies in my stomach. I really don't know what to say." I voice out my thoughts.

"You know, sometimes speaking out all your thoughts to a random person helps a lot. I'm sure nobody knows this better than you." I nod my head in agreement.

"I'm not so sure about Rick too." Better say everything. I place my cup of coffee on the nightstand.

"What do you mean?" Her eyes furrow in confusion.

"He texted me yesterday that he needs my help and wants to meet me next week."

Ari doesn't look so shocked. Instead she raises her eyebrow. "Really? What did you say?"

"I said I'll think about it. The last time we decided to meet, it ended up in a disaster." I cringe at the thought of that night. "I'm not sure about meeting him ever. I like it as a mystery."

"Do you still like him?"

"No. I don't, I just value his friendship a lot." I reply in an instant.

"Think about it. Who knows what game fate would play with you and he might turn out to be your next door neighbor?" Ari chuckles at her stupid guess.

I shake my head. "No. He can't be Jake. Never in a million years. He's too dumb."

"Then who do you think he could be?"
