Chapter 11: The Demonology Institute
A day had passed since Johanne returned home, together with her aunt Lily. Her parents met them happily and embraced the child they had missed so much. Linda thanked Lily immensely for the kindness she had done for them, and Lily too humbly received her gratitude.
Johanne revealed her plans to her parents - she wished to apply to the Demonology Institute, and learn more about demons, angels, and nature spirits. However, her main focus would go on demons, since one of her strongest guardians, Lilith's son, Incubus, was a demon.
Linda, as the strongest Angel Hostess and the mayoress of Golden City, the capital of the West Land, felt really bad at first - she didn't want her daughter to become a demonologist and follow a profession that was so scornfully looked upon by the respectable Angel Hosts. Her husband, Johanne's father, Alex Green, was of the same opinion - as the host of the second strongest celestial archangel, Gabriel, he wouldn't want his daughter to become connected with demons in any way. However, Lily assured them that there was no other way - Johanne had no guardian angel, but only a guardian spirit and a guardian demon, so she should learn more about them. Since she had already trained well in the Eastern Arts of spirit bonding, now she needed to increase her knowledge on demon bonding too, and demonology was just the subject for that. Thus, it was decided, and soon Johanne enrolled in the Demonology Institute - the most prestigious Dark Arts Institute in the whole West Land.
On the very first day, she met some interesting entities - both lecturers and students. The most memorable people for her were the lecturer of Demon History, and an upper-class student who seemed to know quite a lot about demons - Balthazar Corsaire, a handsome boy of eighteen years, with a black braid and hazel eyes, quite popular with younger girls.
"Ah, Balthazar is such a dream guy!" Her classmate girls would often exclaim, "He is so cool and wise and attractive!"
"He's quite nice..." Johanne would agree with a shrug, only to fit in with the girls and get to know them better.
After several classes, three girls came up to her - a blonde one with a long ponytail and blue eyes, and two others with blue-to-green blazing hair and eyes of the same colour.
"Hello. You're a new one, I see?" the blonde one, who acted quite bossy, asked her.
"Um, yeah," Johanne replied with a polite smile, "The name's Johanne."
"I'm Irene. It is nice to meet you." The blonde girl continued chewing her gum. "These are my pals, the twins - Azula," - she pointed at the one with her hair down, - "and Miko," - she then pointed at the twin-tailed one. "They both are from the East Land."
"It is nice to meet you as well!" Johanne shook their hands.
"So, you too have bonded with both a spirit and a demon?" Azula touched the Yin-and-Yang necklace Johanne wore on her neck.
"Hehe, yes! You too?"
"Not Azula. Only I did," Miko cut in, and then gasped, staring at the necklace, "Oh, my goodness, it is the Yin-and-Yang amulet! Don't tell me... Your spirit is from one of the nine great clans?!" She was dumbfounded - the nine great clans were mostly man-eaters, and only the noblest of them had Yin-and-Yang amulets.
"Yes..." Johanne grew even redder. "Actually, it's Huli, since my aunt is_"
"Ah, Huli Clan?! That is amazing!" Miko's jaw dropped - Huli Clan was the highest of all spirits, the clan of tailed foxes, governed by the eternal nine-tailed fox, the Celestial-Fox of Nine Heavens, Lord Huli Yuehong!
"Hehe, yeah... So, who's your spirit?"
"Mine is from the Inu Clan of dogs."
"Awesome!" Johanne too got impressed - Inu Clan were known for their loyalty towards their Spirit Hosts.
"Hmm, I guess you too are quite strong, like us," Irene smirked with pride. "Let us be friends?"
"Sure!"
Johanne brightened - she would have genuine friends for the first time in her life, since back at school, as everyone was an Angel Host, they didn't really wish to go out with her, a Former Host since her very birth. So now, this offer had brought her great joy. She followed the three girls, her newly made friends, to another class.
This was the class of Demon History, conducted exactly by that impressive lecturer Johanne had gotten a liking to on the Welcome Day. The four girls took seats together, amongst the other students. There were both younger and older students attending the lecture, and Irene soon began fidgeting with excitement:
"Ah, Balthazar Corsaire is attending too!"
"Haha, you always get so nervous when you see him, Irene!"
Azula and Miko laughed. Johanne only politely smiled and observed Balthazar on her part too.
He seems quite interesting... I hear from everyone in this college that he's beyond smart.
Soon, however, they had to get back down to earth from their thoughts, as the lecturer of Demon History, Bartholomew Corsaire (who happened to be Balthazar's very uncle) walked in and took his place on his seat.
"Greetings, students, and welcome to the class of Demon History. I am Bartholomew Corsaire, your lecturer, and the Demon Host of Amon, the demon of false friendships. In Demon History, you will get to know the history of demons, as the subject name suggests. We will cover all the material, up to the ultra-modern history, of how the reincarnated soul of Lilith the Queen of the Underworld defeated Layla the Flame Demoness, fifteen years ago. But before I get to the topic, let me read the list and get to know you a little."
He began reading the list of student names, getting to know each of them and marking their attendance. Thus, Johanne soon got to know the names and surnames of her classmates. It turned out that her friends were Irene Le Haut, and Azula and Miko Hanamoto. After finishing with the list, Bartholomew continued:
"Now, let's get back to our topic. We will start from the earliest history. Before I start speaking, I'd like to ask you one basic question - how many primal forces do exist in the world?"
Balthazar raised his hand. Since no one else had volunteered, Mr. Corsaire asked:
"Yes, Balthazar?"
"There are three primal forces - High Forces that control the light energy, Black Energy that controls darkness, and Nature that is the combination of the two."
"Correct." Bartholomew nodded, and then a sly smile flickered on his face: "Another basic question - how many primordial guardians exist there in the world, and which forces do they represent?"
Now Balthazar did not raise his hand anymore. Neither anyone else did.
"Well? No one?"
Why is nobody answering? It's such a simple question!
Johanne thought in confusion. She raised her hand.
"Yes, Miss Green?"
"There are three primordial guardians, or, the Guardians of Nine Heavens: Lord Michael - the force of Creation, Lord Yuehong - the force of Transformation, and Lord Samael - the force of Destruction."
Mr. Corsaire smiled and shook his head:
"Incorrect."
Everyone, including Johanne, gasped - incorrect? How come?! There truly were only three primordial guardians in the world! Only Balthazar had remained silent and calm in all this turmoil.
"But sir, there truly are only three Guardians of Nine Heavens!"
Miko was astounded. She wished to stand up for her newly-made friend. Bartholomew raised his hand to calm the youths and explained:
"True, there are only three Guardians of Nine Heavens. But, there are four primordial guardians, and two anti-guardians, whom you'll cover in the upper classes so I won't be discussing those. Now, the fourth guardian whom you learn nothing about at school is not the one of Nine Heavens, so school teachers avoid the subjects about him."
Everyone gasped - so, there was a fourth guardian they knew nothing about, and even two anti-guardians?! What did that even mean?
"However, since we are demonologists, it is crucial for us to know about this fourth guardian," Mr. Corsaire continued, "He represents the force of Perfection, and his name is Tsukishiro."
The children widened their eyes - so weird, the force of Destruction was an angel and the force of Perfection was a demon? Now that was some mess! Johanne too blinked in stupefaction:
That was truly unexpected. But, if there is this fourth guardian whom Auntie Lily and Auntie Lucy should definitely know about since they're so close with the two other guardians... how come they have never mentioned him?
This was really bizarre. Such questions arising in her head, she decided to attentively pay heed to this interesting lecture about the primordial demon guardian she had never heard of before.
