Grimoire Guthrum

The saying that Y/N L/N was having a really bad time as he proceeded to make his way through the remains of his town was the understatement of the century. Words couldn't describe how much he hated how everything turned out since Mr. Mikage's class. If it was any other situation, he would have most likely wish that he had stayed in his home and skipped classes but this time he was actually quite relieved that he was with the other people when the entire town was bombed by an unknown person because he wasn't left all alone in this mess.

Him not being all by himself in this entire mess didn't last long, though, because unfortunely for him, he got separated from his classmates. Falling remains of the tall building made sure of that. He attempted to make his way to the other side and catch up to the other people but it was no use and he was forced by the circumstances to make his way through the ruins of his town all by himself.

Making his way through the ruins wasn't an easy task and and he had lost the count of how many time he wished he was doing something else while doing so, especially everytime when he had to jump above large hole created by the explosion of the bombs. Sleeping on the ground in the destroyed buildings and lack of food and water weren't so great either. At least he was lucky enough to find some food to keep himself feed in the ruins of the food store, even if it was mostly scraps.

At least he had a chance to experience what the characters from anything related to the post-apocalyptic word felt when they were making their way through the remains of what was once a simple town, filled with people who had their lives but was it a pleasant experience? He wasn't so sure about that. He was leaning more towards the not pleasant one.

He let out a tired sigh when the place back when it all started appeared in his view. That place was his school of course. It looked exactly like it remembered. It was in the same state as it was the last time when he saw it. Not having any better options right now, he began making his way towards it. Perharps he'll stumble upon someone else in the school. Confusingly, he didn't saw a single living person since he got seperated from the other people.

He pushed the door to the school building open and entered it, beginning his trip through the hallways of the said building. He walked through the school building for the next few minutes with hopes of finding someone hiding in there, but finding no one in there. He quickly came to a realization that he was the only person in the school.

He stopped in front of the closed door to the classroom where he and his classmates were in the exact moment everything went down. He pushed it open and was about to enter it but quickly stopped himself from doing so when he looked down and noticed a huge hole under him which was all that remained of the classroom on the lower floor. He felt how at tiny bit of relief overcame his body, aware how lucky he was to look down in the last second otherwise he'd fall into the hole and definitely hurt himself.

He entered his classroom a moment later, this time he didn't have to worry about falling down because he was more careful and watched his feet. He let out a sigh, recalling what happened the last time he was in this place. One second he was just starting to write a chemistry test in Mr. Mikage's claass and the bombs going off and exploading throughout the entire town was the next thing he knew.

He slowly walked over to his seat which was in the back of the classroom, behind the seat of a girl who had an eye-patch over one of her eyes . He stopped in front of his desk and ran his hand through it. He looked over his shoulder, eyeing the state his classroom was in, the state it was it making him let out another sigh. A better portion of it was blown up, the part that was blown up being the hole in the classroom he almost walked into when he tried to enter his classroom for the first time.

No longer having the need of staying in his classroom, Y/N made his way out of it and returned to the hallways of his school. He didn't walk through them for long because it wasn't long before he found himself standing in front of Chairwoman's Kazane office. At first, he intended to walk past it but ultimately decided to take a quick peek inside her office. He grabbed the handle and pushed the door open, giving himself a good look at how the bombings treated Kazane's office.

Just like he excepted. The office was left in a complete mess. The window was gone and the hundreds small pieces of glass were laying on the floor of the office, the furnitures were knocked over and the books from the knocked over bookshelve were laying on the floor, creating a huge pile of them and burrying some of the books underneath the pile.

Or at least it was the scene was greeted with when he entered Kazane's office because everything changed just a few seconds later.

His eyes snapped open in pure suprise when the entire office returned to the way it looked like in the blink of an eye as if it was reseted. The window returned back to it's place and the floor was completely cleared out from the small glass pieces, the furnitures were no longer knocked over on the floor and the books were no longer on the floor, returned to the bookshelve which wasn't laying on the floor anymore.

It was just a moment before he noticed something falling down to the floor from the above right in front of his face. A confused expression formed on his face, as if he wasn't already confused because it was confetti. He lifted his hand up and caught it, wanting to be sure if his mind wasn't playing tricks on him. He quickly proved to himself that all of it was real and he wasn't just seeing things but it only caused more questions to pop into his mind.

How in the world confetti started falling down from the above. There was no way it could fell through the roof because there weren't any holes in it. The only explanation he could think of was that it appeared out of thin air, but he knew how unlikely it was, and quickly scratched this theory off his very short list of explanations for this.

He turned around and ran out of Kazane's office. He quickly made his way to the nearest window, finding out the rest of his school was reseted back to the way it was before the bombings, just like Kazane's office while doing so. He looked through the window, giving himself a good look at what was going on outside of his school and his confusion only increased. The entire town looked exactly like it did before the bombings, just like his school. There was one more thing that immediately caught Y/N's attention the renewed city.

That thing was penguins. A lot of them. Penguins of various sizes and colours were now drawn on the buildings, on the sidewalk, simply on everything. They must have appear on them the moment everything was brought back to the way it was but Y/N couldn't understand why. It was another question that began plaguing his mind as if his mind wasn't already filled with questions.

He just wanted someone to explain him what the hell was going on around here.

He turned away from the window and took a few steps forward, intending to leave the school now that everything was brought to normal and perharps try to search for look for something that will explain everything that just happened to him, starting with the bombing of the town and ending with the complete reset of it back to the way it looked like before everything was blown up, with the addition of some penguins of various sizes and colors drawn on each building of this town.

He stopped dead in his tracks when he heard some movement in Kazane's office. At first he intended to ignore it, thinking that he was just hearing things but quickly changed his mind when he heard another movement that sounded like someone who was taking a single book from the bookshelve.

He made his way back to Kazane's office and stopped in the entrance to it. His eyes instantly snapped open as if he had just spotted a ghost. If he was honest with himself, it could count as seeing a ghost because people who have claimed to have seen one must have felt what he was feeling now.

He saw a particular book with a very strange cover. It must have been burried underneath the other books because he hasn't seen it a moment earlier. The book was turned towards him, giving him a pretty good look at how it looked like. Most of the cover was white with some brown elements there and there. The frowning white face was in the center of the cover, it's pure dark eyes staring at the boy standing in the entrance to the office.

Y/N quickly took his attention away from this book looks because it wasn't what his mind was focusing on right now. What was on his mind right now was the fact that this book was floating, slowly lifting itself up in the air. It was floating in the air like a balloon after it's owner let go of it. The book stopped rising up when it was on Y/N's eye level, letting out a tired sigh as it did so, like a person that was just awoken after a very long sleep.

Y/N rubbed his eyes, wanting to be sure if his mind wasn't playing tricks on him. It wasn't. It was really happening. This book was really floating in the air. There wasn't anything or anyone in this room that could make this book do this. It was really doing all of it by itself.

The book turned side to side as it was looking around it's surroundings before setting it's gaze on Y/N. The said boy froze where he stood. He had no idea how to react. Should he run? Should he stay here and ask this book for the answers, hoping that it was capable of speaking? He had no idea what would happen if he stayed here. This book could be dangerous. He could only wonder what it was capable of doing, considering that it already showed him that it was capable of floating without anyone's help.

He ultimately decided to remain where he stood, knowing how risky it was. He knew he had a 50/50 chance of how this situation could turn out. He could either end up having a normal conversation with this book or end up getting blasted out of it's way if it was capable of doing that, which he found to be quite likely considering it was capable of floating in the air. If he was honest with himself, he prefered the first scenario over the second one.

"...Will you say something or will you just stand there and stare at me?" The floating book spoke up after a moment of looking at Y/N in silence in a very deep male voice as Y/N jumped where he stood. At least he now knew that this book was capable of speaking and he had to admit, it was probably the deepest voice he heard in his entire life. At least it will be easy for him to communicate with this book, "I'm not an expert in human relations but I'm certain that staring at someone without saying anything is considered is to be rude."

Y/N opened his mouth to response to this book's words but his words died in his throat. Another problem appeared. He never was in a situation like this. He had no idea what to say to him. What was he supposed to say to a floating talking book?

"...I'm sorry." Y/N replied after a moment of staying silent as he spoke up for the first time since he encountered this book. He was just confused right now because of what was happening right in front of him, "I just don't know what to say."

"You were left spechless by my presence? I can understand it, considering you've just awakened a being of incredible power that is me." The floating book responded. Y/N knew it wasn't true. Whoever or whatever did the reset of the town was responsible for waking him up. Not him. He just happened to stumble upon him in the exact moment of his awakening, "Who are you associated with? Workshop Witches or Tower Witches?"

"What?" Y/N asked in return, confusion evident in his voice. What was this book talking about? Witches weren't real, or at least he thought so, "What are you talking about? What witches?"

"Excuse me?" The floating book wanted to be sure if he didn't misheard it. He wanted to know if he was found by a common civilian who had no idea about Workshop Witches and Tower Witches, "Are you trying to inform me you have no knowledge about Workshop Witches and Tower Witches?"

Y/N nodded his head, confirming the floating book's suspicions, "That's exactly what I'm saying. I have no idea about everything you just mentioned."

The floating book remained silent for a moment as Y/N tensed up a bit, bracing himself for the floating book's reaction to him being a common civilian who has never heard about Workshop Witches and Tower Witches until now. He knew there was a possibility of the floating book turning over hostile towards him at the news of him being a normal civilian, but much to his relief, the floating book spoke up to him again, continuing their conversation and didn't do anything else.

"...Oh, It appears that I've been found by a common civilian after my awakening." The floating book voiced his thoughts about this situation after a moment of being unresponsive, "How unfortunate it is for whoever was working to wake me up. All the time they must have spent figuring out how to awake me from my slumber and they aren't present here for my awakening. However, I can't understand why they aren't here at this moment with you. I doubt that a common folk like you who doesn't know any spells would be capable of waking me up."

"I think I may have the answer to this question." Y/N stated, as he entered Kazane's office and leaned against the wall, "Some weird stuff happened in this town in the past few days. Perharps it may be related to you waking up from your slumber, which I assume must have been quite long."

"My slumber was indeed quite long. It lasted..." The floating book paused in the middle of sentence. He tried to recall for how long he was asleep but he couldn't. He quickly changed the topic to something else, "You mentioned strange stuff happening in this town in the past few days. What happened in this town which lead you believe it may be related to my awakening?"

Y/N was a bit weirded out by the floating books sudden change of topic but decided to ignore it, for now,  "How about we exchange our names before we'll go further into his conversation. It will be easier for both of us to communicate with each other if we'll know our names." He stated before introducing himself to the floating book, "My name is Y/N L/N. What's yours? If you have one..."

"I am Grimoire Guthrum! I'm the being of incalculable importance! I'm the being of great strength and my powers are desired by the strongest among the Workshop Witches and the Tower Witches!" The floating book introduced himself as Grimoire Guthrum and included some information about himself in his introduction.

Y/N noted one thing to himself once he heard Grimoire Guthrum's introduction. Grimoire Guthrum had a high opinion of himself.

"Now..." The floating book now known Grimoire Guthrum continued, "...That we exchanged our names, could you tell me about everything that could have lead to my awakening?"

Y/N nodded and placed his hand on his chin, "I'm not sure if I am right about it, considering that I as you already know have no clue about witches and everything related to them, but perharps you were awaken from your sleep by the reset of the entire town which happened moments before I saw you rising."

"Reset?" Grimoire Guthrum questioned, wanting to be sure if he didn't misheard it as Y/N nodded in confirmation, "What happened in this town that it was in need of reseting it?"

Y/N removed his hand from his chin and used it to rub his chin, "It's a long story."

"Tell it to me." Grimoire Guthrum said, "I have enough time."

Y/N nodded his head at Grimoire's Guthrum's words. He told him everything, not missing a single detail. He started his story off by telling Grimoire Guthrum about the bombings of the entire town, and continued his story by telling him how he got separated from the classmates not long after the bombings which eventually resulted in him making his way back to school which happened just moments before the reset of the entire town and ending his story with how he was about to head towards the exit from the school building but the sound of something moving in Kazane's office made him turn back and return to Kazane's office where they encountered each other.

"...You weren't lying to me, lad." Grimoire Guthrum admitted seconds after Y/N finished his story, noting one thing to himself. The bombings were definitely a job of the Tower Witches, "This is quite a story."

"Tell me about it." Y/N agreed, "I mean, a floating talking book and witches? I'm still having hard time wrapping my head around it."

"This is all too real, lad." Grimoire Guthrum confirmed to Y/N that everything was indeed real, not a dream, "I'm sure everything I've just mentioned to you, including my very existance may be a bit confusing to you, since you're a common civilian. I can be a great assistance to you in finding the answers I'm certain you want about everything related to the Workshop Witches and the Tower Witches."

Y/N titled his head to the side, not knowing what to think about Grimoire Guthrum's words, "You what?"

"I can a great assistance to you." Grimoire Guthrum repeated himself, "Bow your head and accept my power, become my new user and I shall grant you all the answers you want."

Y/N stayed silent and rubbed his forehead with his hands once he heard Grimoire Guthrum's offer. How did his life come to this in a such short amount of time? One day he was a normal teenager who was known by his classmates as a guy that liked to keep to himself and now a talking floating book by the name of Grimoire Guthrum was asking him to became his new user in exchange for the answers about witches which were apparently real.

He really wondered if he ever would find himself in a situation like if his family never moved to Japan and stayed in America. Probably not. He'd either browse SCP wiki or play video games with his friends at this very moment if he and his family stayed back in America. At least, thanks to the internet, he was still in contact with some of his friends from America.

He let out a long exhale as he made his choice about this matter, not exactly sure if it was a good or a bad one,"...I'll be your new user if you'll provide me all the answers I need to get to understand everything you just told me about and what I had no clue of until now."

"Very well." Grimoire Guthrum answered, floating over to Y/N's side. He stopped on Y/N's right side, above his shoulder, accepting him as his new user, "Should I explain everything you need to know about me and the world you just became a part of in this very moment by becoming my new user or will we move to another place where I shall explain everything to you?"

"The latter." Y/N replied as he lifted his hand up and grabbed Grimoire Guthrum, clutching him as if he was holding a normal book, not wanting to raise any suspicions, "I don't want anyone to walk on me talking to a floating book."

He ran out of Kazane's office and began heading towards the exit from the school, ignoring Grimoire Guthrum's muffled words to let go of off him and that there was no need of hiding him from the other civilians. Y/N couldn't understand any of the words he said to him, though, because of how muffled his voice was as he proceeded to make his way to the one place where Grimoire Guthrum would provide him all the answers to his questions.

He had a perfect place in his mind where no one would walk on him talking to a floating book. It was the place he missed the most when he was making his way through the destroyed town.

His home.

So, I recently watched "Witch Craft Works" and quite enjoyed it. I checked the fanfiction about this anime/manga not long after I finished watching it and saw that there isn't many of them out there and I thought to myself "Why not" and began writing the first chapter of this story shorty after.
