Chapter 3
"Who's there?!"
♢ ♢
I laughed as Crabbe and Goyle fought amongst themselves. "May I join?" Someone chuckled from the side of me. Looking up, I saw Draco. He looked tired but was still smiling.
"Of course" I smiled, shifting my books out of the way as he sat down.
As I looked away from the table, I saw a single paper bird, flying around the classroom. It floated towards Seamus and Dean, Seamus attempted to hit it down but was unsuccessful, only just managing to clip it. Because of this, it floated higher, delicately fluttering its wings as it circled the lights. It reminded me of the time when Cedric took me took me to the blossom tree and the birds that were chattering then.
It floated back down to its owner but Crabbe stood up, firing a large ball of paper at it. Draco let out a loud laugh in amusement.
I smacked him playfully on the arm. "What?" He asked, still grinning.
"It's pretty!" I snapped before I chuckled.
Turning back to look at it, I saw it beginning to flutter down again before it burst into flames. Twirling down to the desk, parts burnt off, littering the classroom. "Good morning children" A voice giggled from behind us all.
We all bent our backs to face her as she began walking up the aisle. "Ordinary. Wizarding. Level examinations. O.W.Ls, commonly known as.." She began, turning to face everyone as she reached the front of the classroom. "OWLs" She let out a high pitched giggle.
Internally, I sighed and grunted. "Study hard, and you will be rewarded. Fail to do so and the consequences may be, severe!" She giggled again.
With a flick of her wand, the piles of books that were laying on the desk, began moving, throwing themselves onto desks. There was a thump as a book landed on my desk. "Your previous instructions have been disturbingly...Uneven" She grunted as we flicked through the books.
"But you'll be pleased to know that from now on, you'll be following a carefully structured Ministry approved course of defensive magic." She smiled, clearly so pleased with herself.
Looking through the book, I noticed there was nothing about using spells. Odd. I looked back to the front of the classroom where Hermione's hand was in the air. "Yes?"
"There's nothing in here about using defensive spells" She said as we all looked up in confusion.
Umbridge giggled, glancing around the room at us all. "Using defensive spells?" She giggled in disbelief. "Why I can't imagine why you would ever need to use defensive spells in my classroom" She said, stepping towards Hermione as she glared at the rest of us.
"We're not gonna use magic?" Ron asked from next to Harry.
"You will be learning about defensive spells in a safe, secure, risk free way" She explained.
Harry shook his head. "What use is that? If we're going to be attacked it wont be risk free!"
Umbridge snarled. "Student's will raise their hands when they speak in my class!"
As she reached the front of the class one more, she turned around, smiling at us all. "It is he view of the Ministry that a theoretical knowledge will be sufficient enough to get you through your examinations which, after all, is what school's about" Her hands were wrapped delicately around her wand.
Harry sparked up again. "And how's theory supposed to protect us from what's out there?" He growled.
"There is nothing out there, dear, who do you think wants to attack school children like yourselves?" She asked, ignoring the obvious answer.
I stood up, everyone turned to look at me, including Harry. "There are people that would gladly hurt us, we should know that better than anyone else." I snapped.
"Sit. Down" She ordered.
Slowly, I obeyed. "Well, Potter, who do you think would hurt you?" She asked again, slowly.
"Oh, I don't know.." Harry muttered sarcastically. "Lord Voldemort!" He snarled.
Eye rolls could be heard throughout the classroom, muttering sounded throughout as I looked at Draco. He nodded at me before we all looked back at Umbridge who was beginning to pace once again as she surveyed her surroundings. "Now let me make this, quite plain.." She began. "You have all been told that a certain Dark Wizard is at large once again, this is a lie"
Harry shook his head, stuttering and stammering. "It's not a lie, we saw him! I fought him!"
"Detention, Mr Potter!" Umbridge called out.
Harry didn't stop, "So your saying Cedric Diggory dropped dead of his own accord?"
Umbridge turned to face everyone, her signature smile plastered on her face again. "Cedric Diggory's death was a tragic accident!"
"It was murder! Voldemort murdered him, you must know this!" Harry yelled.
I stood once again. "Don't stand here and tell me that I am lying about watching my best friend get murdered! Don't tell me for a second that I'm making it up! It's an insult to his legacy!" I shouted, my voice louder than it had ever been.
The lies of the Ministry were frustrating. I wasn't going to let Cedric's death be for nothing.
"Enough! Enough, see me later, Mr Potter, my office!" She said with exhaustion. Finally, she let out another giggle.
I shook my head at everyone before I ran out, heading towards the girls toilets, tears dripping.
I spent half my time crying most days. I was constantly reminded of what I had done. The torturing, the murder I had committed...
Glancing at myself in the murky and grimy mirror, I saw a murderer, my short hair was a reminder of what I had done --what I had committed. And still, no one knew, I had concealed it. No one had even noticed my hair, no one had noticed the dullness in my eyes, or the straightness of my mouth, not one person.
For a while, I stood, glaring at my reflection in the mirror. There seemed to be an oddity about the girls toilet, something I didn't realise until now. A small dripping of the tap could be heard from the sink next to me before it slowly evolved into a full flow.
Gasping, I stammered back, the water beginning to fill the sink and starting to overflow. The sound of the water splashing against the floor echoed around before a single giggled rattled me.
"Who's there..?" I asked quietly as my tears dried up. If anyone was playing tricks on me, I probably wasn't very intimidating enough to scare them off.
Merlin's Beard, I'd killed a man, if I couldn't stand up to someone, how would I survive. Shaking my head, I spoke out again. "Who's there?!" My voice was confident this time as I slowly drew my wand.
Another giggle, but no answer. "I'm warning you!" I shouted as a head appeared through the stone tiles. She giggled again.
"Oh, did I scare you?" She giggled to herself as her body rose from the ground. "I didn't mean to, I promise" She giggled again as she floated over.
Sighing, I lowered my wand. "How are you-? Who are you?" I stuttered.
She flew around the room. "Myrtle" She grinned and giggled.
"Who?" I asked, stepping back uncomfortably.
Fury overtook her face. "Myrtle, Moaning Myrtle!" She yelled. "No one knows about me! Why would you? I'm just poor, little, old, me!" She shouted, following me as I retreated back into the wall.
I raised my arms to stop her coming any closer but they just disappeared inside her body. "You think it's funny! To put your hand through me!" She bellowed as I quickly moved the.
"No, no..Sorry.." I apologized as she backed away. "I didn't realize, I've never heard about you, or seen you.. I don't visit these toilets much.." I muttered as we wandered back to the sinks.
As we did, my feet splashed around in the water. Reaching for the tap, she giggled again. With a shake of my head, I turned the tap off. It squeaked before the water stopped running. "Did you have to do this?" I asked, turning around.
Another giggle. "How else was I supposed to scare you?" She asked innocently.
Rolling my eyes, I answered. "How about not?" She flew around me. "Anyways, why are you here? In the girls toilets of all places"
She flew into my face again. "I died in here" She snarled slightly.
"What happened? If you don't mind me asking..." I raised a brow, letting it fall sheepishly.
Her brows furrowed with anger as she flew around again, this time with rage, not content. "That's what everyone wants to know! How did you die!?" She snapped before she stopped in front of me. "I was murdered!" She shouted.
"I'm sorry to hear that..." I muttered. "I really must be off.." I said, grabbing my soggy bag from the floor as I rushed off.
She seemed so hot and cold, I didn't know what to ask or say for fear she might scream at me. Maybe she was just lonely, it made sense and if that was the reason, I understood.
Since arriving back at Hogwarts, I'd felt alone. Even Harry didn't speak to me, and it was crucial he did..
