What does it mean to be a hero?

It means to stand for something. To be a hero, you're being a symbol for others. A light in the dark. Something people look towards to. To be a hero, you're the hope that people cling onto. You're a role model for others, and every choice you make has an impact. Every breath you take is for others, because people are relying on you. You can't let them down.

Standing on the edge of the rooftops, his dirty blonde hair swished with the wind. Rain pattering and getting his wear wet, but he hadn't much care. He was soaking wet by now, but it didn't matter. Patrolling the city was his priority, and you never know what goes on at night. Afterall, that's the time all the villains like to play... under the cover of the black. Sure, middle of the day was still needed just as much watch, but- It was the night that they could slither around in the shadows like the snakes they are. Only in night could they disappear without a trace. Only in night had people let their guard down by the slightest bit.

His eyes scanning over the city district, cars honked loudly and people murmured to their phones or engaged in conversations with others next to them. The city truly never slept, always busy and bright. Yet, the citizens hadn't given much care to their surroundings. Only when the imminent danger was right in their face would you truly provoke a reaction out of them. Those still out this late, their eyes barely  open at times. Powering themselves on caffeine and energy drinks...

Standing up, the hero almost immediately lost footing on the slippery edge of the roof. The cold and wet stone setting him off. Falling right off that tall building, he yelped in panic before realizing that- oh yeah! He could fly...Right...

Definitely meant to do that!

Picking himself up into the air, he let out a relieved sigh. No no, totally meant to do that. 100%. Soaring through the chilled air, under the cover of the night. The wind brushed against him, sending a chill throughout his body. It sounded like it was roaring in his eyes, as his dirty blonde locks swayed and blew around. That'd definitely need some serious combing later, but it hadn't mattered right now.

Right now, he just needed to get a grip over himself and act like an actual hero. He had magic powers for crying out loud! This man was no ordinary human.

So, you're probably wondering who I am right? Well, my hero name is Grian, but my secret identity is Whiplash.

...

Wait a minute, that's not right- Pretend I said that the other way around. Right.. Haha, this is awkward...

Talk about first impressions, huh?

Hey, can we go back to that serious talk about what a hero means?

Suddenly, a large gust of wind sent him spiraling out of control. Blowing hard against him, it forced the smaller hero to follow the current of the wind. Everything hitting him so fast, no- Literally, he got hit so fast. One of the many buildings in the city coming right at him, as the door looked like it was approaching his face even though it was quite the opposite.

Slamming right into the doorway, his face stung and screamed at him. He almost swore that the damned thing left behind a red mark.

Whiplash just slowly drooped down, setting himself on down the cold stone flooring. He just rubbed his face, hearing the soft chuckles turn into uncontrollable bursts of laughter from an audience that watched the scene unfold. A known villain that had watched their enemy go face first into the door on their own terms.

Grian growled, sending a strong gust of wind that slammed them into the wall.

"Ass." Whiplash said through gritted teeth, as the supposed bad guy suddenly regretted their decision to laugh at him.

So, pausing right here. In this moment of time...

What does being a hero mean?

By definition, a hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

Yet, what have I done to earn that title? Am I truly a hero? Maybe I am, for trying to secure the safety of others and put their lives before my own. To promise myself to use my powers only for good, but how is good defined?

How can we decide what is truly right or wrong? How can we be putting the law in our hands, and deciding who breaks it? How can we judge others on their actions and decide if they're bad or not?

There is a line to cross- When you hurt others, put their lives in danger, that's when you've crossed that line. Yet... We're so quick to decide who is evil and good. Is that really fair? Is that really right..?

Everything isn't black and white, it's not polar opposites. They blend together, and things- Are actually more grey.

So am I truly a hero?

Only my story will tell. Only others can decide.

So, this is my—- No... This is our story. All the villains and heroes you see, they all have gone through something to be the way they are now. So welcome to our story.

Welcome to the grey line.

Hey, this opening chapter was written by a very tired
-__Bad_Karma__-

And finished at around 3am when they've been stalling on everything because writer's block and stuff I guess.

With around 900 words, they should probs be going to bed now, but they're probably gonna stay up til like 5-6am instead

Why are they talking about themselves in 3rd person? Who knows.

They also can't freaking type and end up checking over what they write to actually English correctly.

Yeah I kinda just stretched this on, are you guys proud? I'm not. Okay bai

Stay safe y'all <3
