White Rabbit

Kee was warm, comfortable, and had no idea why.

The last she remembered was that she'd totally flipped out at the enemy patrol. Oh no......no way......she had fallen asleep at the mercy of Kaldur?! Bolting upright she gazed in to the calming eyes of her father, who held her hand comfortingly.

' Dad?' She signed curiously, once she'd freed her second hand.

" Yeah hon, you fell asleep but it's fine now," Hal murmured quietly.

' Oh......did I miss my shift at the cafeteria?' Kee signed with slight surprise.

" No, no you've got an hour before that starts. But can you explain to me what happened?" Hal inquired, shifting closer to her in comfort.

Kee sat slouched on the bed, scrubbing a hand through her hair tiredly. She was still focused on the fact that Kaldur must have brought her back, and oh was she embarrassed! This sent her thoughts about him conflicting entirely, she couldn't show weakness like that in front of him! Oh man was he a strange guy, one minute traitor, the next minute protector!

Realizing she was yet to reply and Hal looked ready to check her over for a head injury, she stared to sign an answer, confusion still reigning in her eyes though.

' I needed to be alone, and he turned up wanting to talk. I flew away not wanting to talk to him when the patrol was sighted. They were too close to just let them continue on, so we fought them, and we won. I guess I just expended too much energy in the final blast,' Kee signed somewhat listlessly.

" Oh, kid, if he's bothering you you should have told me. I don't even know how he got out! But if he messes up I'll teach him a lesson for you," Hal assured, a glint in his eyes.

' Dad, please, I am not a child anymore, I can take care of my own problems!' Kee signed, fixing him with a small glare.

" Look.....I know that, but give a dad a break here, with all that's going on I forget how grown up you are now," Hal joked, ruffling her hair.

Kee rolled her eyes and stood up with the intention of stretching, only to grimace at the creaking her prosthetic made.

' That better not be rusting,' Kee signed with an annoyed glance at the hidden limb.

Hal chuckled quietly, " I'm sure Batman will agree to look at it later, you know he has a soft spot for you," he pointed out mischievously.

Kee walked past him, giving his shoulder a nudge as she turned and signed her parting words.

' Of course he does, it's my natural charm'.

After her shift in the cafeteria where she yet again had to stop uncooked meat from being served out, Kee was looking forward to doing something outside. She had too much pent up energy after her long sleep, and she was in the mood for a night flight. Surely the league wouldn't mind her going out for an hour.

Just as she made up her mind, her prosthetic creaked again, making her pause in her decision.

It's the perfect night for a flight! The weather's perfect, the moon and stars are bright, the wind has been tugging at you and begging you to go out again ever since your shift started! However, you did say your prosthetic was bothering you and knowing dad he probably has half the league ready to make sure you get it checked out. He is a worrier, probably because you're his only offspring. Well, he does have Carol. It won't take long to get Batman to take a look at it, you can go out afterwards.

So she set off in the direction of the lower caves, where there was more space and where Batman had his base. He built all sorts of things down there, and as far as she knew, Alfred and the boys lived down there too. Well, Red Robin didn't, he was studying abroad when all this happened and got ordered to protect his city over in Italy.

Entering the place where she knew he'd be, the improvised Batcomputer that he so often monitored, trying to figure out the whereabouts of several key enemy bases. Sure enough, he was there, hunched over slightly as he typed away.

" Kee!" Was the only warning she got before she was enveloped in a huge hug from behind, lifting her clear off her feet.

She struggled slightly as se was swung around in circles, knowing exactly who was holding her so uncomfortably.

" Robin, put her down," Batman groused from the computer, not even turning around.

She was dropped unceremoniously to her feet and she didn't hesitate to grow a root around Robin's foot, causing him to trip.

She swore she had seen a twitch of a smile grace Batman's lips.

' Hey boys, Batman, you mind taking a look at the leg, it seems to be creaking way too much for my liking,' Kee greeted, a hopeful look on her face.

" Oh do you really need to ask? You know he will, he'd do anything for you," Red Hood chuckled from a dark corner as he sat cleaning his guns.

' Hilarious,' Kee deadpanned.

" No, seriously he would! You can't seriously say he wouldn't, especially not after the Virginia incident," Robin backed up, grinning at his older brother.

Kee certainly remembered that day. She'd been hit in the arm by a laser, barely even a glancing blow and she knew there'd be barely any pain. No one told Batman that. He'd slammed in to the robot who'd done it, taking it out n record time and then after seeing the tiny seep of blood he'd gone ballistic, completely obliterating the enemy robots with an amused league patrol watching him do it.

" If you're quite done mocking me, I believe Risingstorm needs help," Batman growled, but there was a hint of amusement in his tone.

Kee sat down on a chair casually, as she watched Batman take off her prothetic to examine it on his workbench. She hated not having it on, it felt so empty where she knew she was supposed to have flesh or in her case, metal. Yet she didn't fear, ether was no harm that would ever befall her in the presence of three of her most favorite people.

' So, what've you boys been working on down here?' Kee signed curiously, trying to pass the time.

" The Green Bandit sent a message on one of the robots brought down by Superman and Nightwing yesterday. We are yet to decode it," Batman informed, having watched her signs in the reflection of his table mirror.

" He's been working on it all day, and you can totally tell it's been bugging him!" Robin chuckled, his recently broken voice hadn't made his cackle any less creepy.

Kee almost laughed out loud when Robin, who as standing beside her about to try and start a poking war, was stopped by a fierce and protective glare from Batman in the mirror. Robin, who was totally unaffected by the glare just rolled his eyes and walked over to a notepad, bringing it back for her to read.

" Ya wanna take a look at it?" Robin invited.

Follow the White Rabbit

Follow it fast

Follow the White Rabbit to the Never Never

And make sure you aren't last.

Kee staerd at the rhyme in her hands. It was possibly the strangest villain's note she'd ever read. Wasn't the White Rabbit from the Alice in Wonderland story? The words of the third line struck a chord in her though, and she went rigid, mind flashing back to the place she'd never thought she'd see again. Her long time home before the assassins had found them again.

Where she'd been born and raised for most of her life before running to the city.

" Keelan?"

" Yeah Blaine?"

" I know I'm new here at this school but why do our mums and dads call this place the outback?"

" Well, that's what it's called,"

" Don't people call this place the Never Never though?"

" It has many names, Blaine, but other folks call us part of the Northern Territory now"

" I like the Never Never better though,"

" Yeah, same here,"

Keelan was jolted from her memories of second grade when Red Hood waved a hand in front of her face.

" Yo Kee! You hearing me?" He asked, a slight concern showing on his scarred face.

She nodded slowly, looking over to a worried Batman, poised to come over to her.

' Sorry, but I think I know what it means, and it isn't good,' Kee signed slowly.

It made sense, of course the Bandit wouldn't stop at just America, but why Northen Territory? There was barely anything there! There were much more profitable places like the Prime Ministers headquarters in Canberra, or Sydney! Why the least populate state?

" What is it?" Robin asked excitedly.

' It's where the Bandit's going next. Never Never is a name the outback lands of the Northern Territory, it's where my old home is," Kee signed quickly.

" That explains the accent. But hey, if that's true then we know what the plan is. We have to get to the land down under before the Bandit does," Red Hood mused aloud.

Batman handed Kee back her leg, and she quickly put it on, watching as Batman made a connection to the league's comms.

" League. We have reason to believe that the Bandit's next target is Australia. Meet in the cafeteria immediately," Batman growled in to the comm.
