Beyond the Line Part 5

Sometimes the best heroes are the ones who choose to remain unknown and unsung.

While glory, fame and a place in the history books may be satisfying, not all want that.

One such anomaly was Orion, a Mobian of firm honor and resolve.

Not much or any is known about this warrior wolf but legends and myths.

But many who do come across the tales will always ask questions that remain unanswered.

Who was he?

Orion was a Mobian that has multiple evidence of his existence in different time periods, but no one has been able to confirm what his status was in life.

We only get an idea of what he is when he appeared during the Great War.

The list of what's considered his canon accomplishments were mostly that of warrior feats.

But many speculate his origins and what drove him to the village that was caught in the war.

To some, he was the long lost prince of a kingdom or the son of a chieftain.

To others, he was an orphaned and incredibly distant relative of the royal Acorn family.

But then there's the one myth that only a rare number believe.

It's the myth that Orion was the son of a god of death, forced to live in eternal immortality for his life with no parent.

Regardless of which myth you believe, it's evident that Orion had no family whatsoever prior to the Great War.

---------------------------------------------

Orion's accomplishments range from various difficult to supposedly impossible trials and tests.

1) He passed the Elite 6 Trial, which consists of beating the six best warriors at the time with either weak weapons or no weapons.

2) Survived Famine Island, the worst and harshest place on Mobius.

3) Defeated a ninja master and samurai at close range, faster than the eyes can process.

4) Climb Mt. Majin, a volcano that doesn't exist anymore due to eruptions prior to the war.

And finally...

5) Passed all tests in the Spiritual Summit.

Many scholars debate even today on which of his accomplishments are actually real or fake.

What is real is who his wife was.

Lyra had been with Orion ever since they met in Shamar, and were married 5 years later.

They left any major civilization behind and moved to a Mobian village inside the human borders.

The village was named after a fallen chieftain who died in combat against nearby natives, calling it Jerona.

Orion and Lyra settled down and started growing crops to feed themselves and trade some for other resources.

It was the peaceful life they wanted, until the worst happened for them.

When the Great War broke out, the village was blockaded from any outside trade or travelers.

This and tough weather conditions at the time shorted out the food supply needed for the population to survive.

To make matters worse, it was defying their rules and traditions that the village held sacred.

Jerona village had started a tradition that dates back to the earliest age of Mobian history.

The tradition was that in the event of a war, Jerona would be the last step between two sides and war.

The village chieftain would personally visit both sides and request that they meet at Jerona to make negotiations.

The negotiations would either be making a peaceful trade to satisfy both sides...

...or a duel between strongest warriors to determine who was in the right and honorable side.

Jerona had accomplished diverting most wars for centuries, earning the name "The Olive Branch of the World".

But the recent wars between humans and Mobians changed things.

Jerona was used to negotiating between Mobian tribes for generations.

But George Acorn's war he declared raised questions on whether or not it could've been negotiated.

The chieftain tried to get George Acorn to meet with the human leader for the customs, but failed horribly.

George had blocked the chieftain from getting in to meet with him.

After that, Jerona tried to avoid conscription and drafting into the army.

But what really violated them was the Great War.

The Great War pretty much destroyed Jerona's traditional negotiating meetings, making them lose their place in the world.

--------------------------------------------

When the two scouts were presumably killed by both sides, Jerona starts to panic again.

They had already failed to divert one war, and they could not afford to let another one happen.

The people debated as they tried to get whatever scraps they could gather to survive.

Would the negotiations work again?

Or would this one get rejected by the king too?

Jerona was mostly neutral whenever it came to humans, choosing to view them like any other person.

There were even a few families that let some soldiers stay the night in their home because of a lack of tents.

A war between both races is something Orion and the village dreaded ever since the last war between them.

It was now or never.

The chieftain was sent to Mobotropolis to try to convince King Max to talk with the human leader.

Unfortunately, he was blocked off again, almost exactly like the last war.

Jerona panicked even more, fearing the war would actually reach their fields soon.

But then a ray of hope shines down on them...

The human leader responded back, completely willing to meet with the king to get answers.

All that was left was to get the king out of the castle and then it would be fair from there.

But then something horrible happened...

The chieftain's companion for the journey came back with a large sack.

Inside...was the dead body of the chieftain!

The companion said that there was an attack outside Mobotropolis, with him and the chieftain caught in the crossfire.

The chieftain was supposedly shot and killed by the humans as Kodos' forces managed to push them back.

When Jerona questioned the human leader, he said that he wasn't launching anything unless negotiations failed.

This made them paranoid as to whether or not the humans could be trusted, starting to make guarding the village a more active task than normal.

It wasn't until Orion came to pay the chieftain respects that the truth was found out.

When Orion went to apply spices to the body, he found something off.

He was told the holes in the body were bullet holes, but Orion saw a different kind of wound.

The holes looked like that of multiple stab wounds...from a Mobian blade!

Orion sneaked into the tent of the chieftain's companion and matched the blade to the chieftain's wounds.

Orion managed to get everyone to bring him in for questioning.

The companion revealed that General Kodos had payed him to help betray the chieftain.

Kodos stabbed the chieftain several times before letting the companion deal a few more for satisfaction.

It was a plan to prevent humans and Mobians from ever coexisting on the same planet.

The people were outraged at the betrayal!

The traitor was sentenced to death by drowning afterwards.

With the last chieftain dead, Jerona literally had no idea what to do afterwards.

With no true leader, especially now that a war was inevitable, they were left lost to fear.

They failed negotiating and lost a leader, leaving their village powerless.

At any moment Kodos could come and force the population to be drafted into war.

Jerona may be in human territory at the time, but it was still under Acorn family rule.

The only choices left were to submit entirely...

...or die for treason against the king, even though it was Kodos that would claim it treason.

But that's when their hero stepped in and threw in the forbidden "I" word.

Independence.

------------------------------------------

Orion stepped before the people of Jerona and proposed the impossible.

They would declare separation from the Acorn rule...entirely.

This idea scared most of them, namely the ones that still wanted negotiations.

Kodos is already their enemy for the crime he committed against them, but they didn't want to give him a reason to come down and force them into submission.

People were still wanting the peaceful life they had, and feared that an occupation by Kodos would spell the end of the living they worked hard for.

Orion pointed out to them the numerous times the nobility and military had abused their rights and customs throughout the history of Jerona.

Heavy taxation

Unfair trade and tariffs

Even one noble sending troops to occupy the fields around the village, which was a clear violation of their freedom.

And of course, their negotiations being denied twice in the past few generations.

Orion said that it was now the time to act, or else they would remain slaves to them for eternity.

Majority of the village got behind him and decided he would be "acting chieftain" until the war was over.

Normal POV

Orion and Lyra's home 8:00 PM

Lyra looked at her husband with eyes of concern for him. "What troubles you, my love?"

Orion was looking at his meal when she said that. "The village....they voted that I would lead them........at least until the conflict calms down and a new bloodline can be picked."

Lyra frowned. "I guess it was only a matter of time before your leadership would get you attention. But why does this worry you?"

Orion sighed. "It's just that....I never wanted this for us....especially whenever we decide to have a child. What if this war goes on too long? Will my child become the target of everyone who wants me to submit? What if I fail to save y-"

He was silenced as Lyra kissed him before pulling back to look at him.

Lyra smiled. "I'm not going to leave you....and your child and I will always love you and be with you, even if death takes us for a while."

Orion nods and smiled back. "You're right....you're always right."

Lyra gets up and points outside. "Now as your wife, I command you to go out there and protect our friends and neighbors."

Orion chuckled before kissing her hand. "Yes my lady."

-------------------------------------------

Orion took charge a week later, focusing on both crop growth and defense.

Many wondered how they would be able to hold off both of the massive armies.

While they considered adding guns to their arsenals to have a high chance against the Mobian army, Orion was heavily against it.

Instead, they were to use traditional weapons like spears, swords, bows and axes.

He even allowed work tools like pick axes, pitch forks and hammers to be used as weapons.

Orion wanted to defend the village with the same honor they always had.

He didn't want them to win any battles with the weapons of cowards.

Orion would soon be known later in the Great War as the one who never had a bullet fired from his side.

And his honor would soon pay off...
