Beyond the Line Part 3
Honor is one of the most difficult things to sacrifice when you fight for your view.
How can one sacrifice pride and reputation when one needs it to have a living?
Sir James Woofwell struggles with this question in his time of need.
Sir Woofwell was born into a minor noble family serving under the royal family.
James grew up around Fredrick Acorn when they were both young and mentored.
Not only was he wealthy, but was talented in swordsmanship, boxing, science, literature and the arts.
His family were both generous and protective of the territory they were given to maintain, often giving up hours of their schedule just to help a neighbor out.
After helping a Mobotroplis citizen who was in poverty, James was dubbed the famous knight title by his friend, now a king at the time.
James worked most of his time at the castle, but did spare time for his family's territory.
His life was mostly spent helping keep order and preparing the court to accept Maximillian as the new king.
He was also a friend of Nate Morgan at the time.
It was a sad time for him when Nate left the kingdom.
When the war broke out, he was unable to come to his territory's defense with the attack on Mobotropolis happening.
When he got news of his home, it was already in ruins.
Some of his forces there retreated to help James, while others went rogue and fended for themselves.
As the war continued in it's aggressive tactics, James questioned the compassion his fellow Mobians had compared to their enemies.

Tape recording #15
My family was a miracle to the people of our territory.
Though the war brought the family down, the citizens kept their hope up that we would come back for them.
The news of my people's homes in ruin was a hard truth to swallow, and a difficult guilt to gulp.
I had spent the campaign defending small sections of land from invading forces.
When we reclaimed Mobotropolis, I was down in the streets, fighting off raids.
Sometimes I did it commanding troops...
....while other times I went into the battlefield and took them out stealthily.
Being in Mobotropolis as a battlefield was like we had lost all sense of honor and dignity.
One fellow soldier said it was hell on Mobius there.
But we made the most of it anyways, using whatever we had as an advantage.
I questioned myself every day if we were going to still be us once this war was over.
Kodos however shrugged all of questions off, including mine that were specifically meant to be addressed to the king.
I never liked our Warlord, always talking filth about our enemy.
Everything the humans did was considered a crime against peace by that scoundrel.
I will not deny that I have something against them in the matter.
The Mobian scout that was killed...
...he was going to be engaged to my cousin.
She was heartbroken forever after learning of his death.
It is something I will hold forever against whoever killed him.
But the murder should be held on one person...
...not the population as a whole.
To me, this judgment against the human race is unjust in any shape and form.
But as always, we're quick to draw the blade and never ask questions.
I honestly wonder if we will ever learn.
Unfortunately, we were too busy trying to survive in our massive walls to consider what we were doing.
But... I found out the truth one day.
After Kodos was assumed dead, I came upon one of his journals.
In it, he mentioned his twisted views against the humans.
He was not ashamed to mention that he killed my cousin's fiancé...
.....without a hint of remorse for doing it!
I wanted to throw that filth in the furnace!
But... I decided to keep the journal hidden as proof in the future.
As much as I would like to show the journal immediately...
...I doubted anyone would believe me.
Chaos above, they would have accused me of falsely accusing a dead "hero"!
If they were shown it after the war, we could keep Kodos banished and probably secure peace for generations.
Sad to say, it would not end the feud between our races.
Not when I found something so disturbing, I feared what our race's outcome would be.

James still stayed with the Mobian royal guard, determined to end the war.
While being unpopular for sympathies for the humans, James still held a voice in the large court he was in.
It wasn't until a month after Julien became Warlord that James found out a devastating secret.

I was securing the back of Mobotropolis, mostly to make sure we did not get ambushed on two or more fronts.
I had managed to reduce it down to small numbers, mainly just one or pairs of humans trying to make an assassination attempt.
I took a break in my favorite hidden location, when I heard talking.
I found two Mobians talking with each other, discussing some sort of plan.
It was not something King Max knew about.

Normal POV
Mobotropolis battlefield 5:00
James peaks from the second floor of a ruined building to hear the conversation.
A male and a female Mobian were talking with each other while getting weapons ready.
The female was a opossum wearing dark clothes.
The male looked like a feline, but James' sight can't see what it is through the cover.
The opossum talked. "So what was our plan after we're dismissed from guard duty?"
The male responded. "After our weapons are ready, we will launch a campaign into human territory. They're so busy here, they will never see an attack in their land coming."
The female continued. "But what about the no gun policy? The king won't tolerate it."
The male answered. "The king won't get a say in it...because he won't be around to see the glorious future."
James holds back a gasp to prevent them from seeing him.
He hides to prevent them from seeing him.
The female asked. "Which is first? Assassination or attack?"
The male answered. "We try to assassinate Max first. Getting him out of the way would be easier since we'll have the whole army after that."
The female laughed. "And if we can't, we'll get rid of his kid after he's dead and take control."
James sneaks off until he was far away from them.
He whispers to himself. "I got to warn Max. But how?"

Normal POV
Woofwell personal room in Mobotropolis palace 5:30
James is talking with his wife, Valerie.
James finished his conversation with her. "And that's when I ran here."
Valerie was still overcome with shock. "Of all the low and dirty things, they choose to kill their own king?!"
She looked at him. "When will this be?"
He sighed. "Not certain, though my theory is it happening at Max's birthday party."
She nods. "You need to tell him, or at least ask for the security to be double."
James paces. "I do not even know which guards might be in league with them. I could wind up making it worse for him."
Valerie stood up. "Then what is your plan to stop them?"
James looked through a few books. "I... I will try to contact the human forces and tell them of the our ranks being compromised."
Valerie tilted her head. "Will they trust you? You are the one who led troops against them at Emerson Creek after all."
James nods. "We are winning the war and the human side is desperate. Any knowledge they need to know about their survival is critical. If they do not trust my warning, a battle will be their sign of the truth."
Valerie walks to him. "I will trust your decision, but you do know the penalty for spying for the enemy, do you not?"
James let out another sigh. "I am aware, and I accept the consequences."
He put the books up and looks at her. "Everyone has lost their minds with this war. My own honor and reputation will not matter if everyone else loses their humanity."
James then held her shoulders. "I trained by Fredrick's side and was a supporter of Nate Morgan's monumental achievements. I will not let what they worked hard for turn into a heartless regime."
--------------------------------------------
James tries to contact human forces to relay the information to them.
After a week, he managed to get a hold of a base 50 miles from the border.
While they didn't believe him at first, the data he shared was too tempting to ignore.
They agreed to let James be their double agent, under certain circumstances.
1) Avoid reporting important positions in the human army.
2) Change frequencies often to avoid giving away the signal.
3) Keep knowledge of contact unknown, even to loved ones.
And finally...
4) Don't get caught before your data was given.
While understandably difficult, James agreed to all terms.
Being a spy might put him at risk, but he was willing to sacrifice his noble title to build trust again between the opposing sides.
