Solar eclipse
"There is a new wave on the internet today, it is the laâve app, otherwise known as the carton app for its characteristic carton brown color and theme".
The presenter makes a short pause, and takes her eyes off the script in her hands to the videographer at the adjacent end of the room. The videographer, a curly redhead shots a grin at her and makes the universal thumbs up sign, she knew what it meant.
Their exchange barely takes a full minute before she resumes her reading, a new zest in her manner of speech.
"The laâve app, is no stranger to the public use and has been in existence for about six to ten years, and it is undeniably one of the highly successful social media app owing to its very dynamic and user friendly structure, our headline for today is something that has been in the public eye for several weeks, its both a question of concern and a strong topic".
"Recently, thousands of people mostly adolescent and pubescent has taken to their laâve page to pour out requests and desires, it is pertinent to note that the users of the laâve app are predominately teens, so this is tagged as a not-so-strange occurrence".
"What is strange, and has been drawing attention and much needed concern is the content of this "requests and desires". We will take a short break and when we return we would be communicating with some of our correspondents in various cities across the world".
----
"Welcome back, as earlier mentioned we are taking a look at our correspondents and their interviews with various people, on the gnawing issue of the laâve app".
She takes a flittering glance at the videographer, who beams at her with two thumbs, she smiles into the camera and takes a left turn on the swivel chair, the camera follows suit capturing the interaction with the projector.
"Our first correspondent today is Spencer in Milan, Italy.
The projector lights up, and she turns to interact with the correspondent on the other side.
"Hello Spencer, and how is Milan today?".
She makes a subtle attempt at crossing her legs, which was effectively impossible. She cursed internally, her mind went over the peach trousers she had abandoned in favor of the skin tight blue skirt.
Aware that she missed whatever reply that Spencer had given, she asked her next question with ease, grateful that she had seeped back into reality in time to ask the next question, nobody would have appreciated a repeat of what happened last Friday, most especially her fiery tempered boss.
"Can you tell us, about the reactions of the residents of milan to the uprising in the laâve app?".
Spencer's first response was a nod and then a video of his interviews with residents of Milan.
She relaxed a bit, as the camera adjusted in full viewing of the projector, she bobbed her head appreciatively, at least the network was good enough.
Her next correspondent is Emily in Cairo, Egypt, who shows a video of her own experience. She thanks her and switches to her last correspondent. One of her supposed kins men from Nigeria.
"Our last correspondent is em-e- molar, in Abuja, Nigeria".
The projector lights up for the third time, she watched him wince then briefly nodded, she asked her next question and silently hoped that, that was the correct pronunciation of his name. She knew how much he flinched and winced whenever someone mispronounced his name.
Apparently, she got it wrong again. She was sure that only the viewers did not notice his gritting and pained expression, as he introduced himself as "Emimola" and played his experience.
In the video, Emimola stands next to a plump woman who looks slightly angry and is literally shouting her response at him.
"How do I feel about the app?" She repeats his question. "I feel betrayed, and I find it scary that my child will be willing to write his inner most concern and feelings to somebody he barely knows and calls that burden reliving".
The clip ends and the second clip comes up, she notes that it is the same environment, most likely the same street and "em-e-molar" retains his stance from his encounter with the angry plump woman.
Though, she knew him to be a very irritable person, she understood his stance, she had her own fair share of interviewees passing their aggression to the interview or newsperson.
The interviewee in the second clip, is a light skinned tall man, who looked twenty-something ish. He asserted his ground on the issue calmly. "Its funny to say the least, if not, how do we explain the belief that an app can grant a wish, I understand people's reactions most especially parents, but I think this will pass, its probably a ploy by some attention seeking teen".
The third interviewee, is a young boy who is probably a senior, he seems genuinely happy to be asked about the laâve app, and his expression shifts from happy to pained as he responds.
"I know its crazy, and I don't believe the part where it grants wishes, I tried it and it didn't work for me, but I think the reason why people have continued with the trend is not because they believe that it can grant their wishes, but because they know that someone on the other side, is willing to hear or know about your feelings, emotions and problem even if they can't solve it".
The fourth interviewee, is a man and a woman who preassumedly is married. The man speaks first,
"I don't like this whole thing, and I think the government should order the app to be discontinued, in a world like ours, with outwardly nice but inwardly evil strangers scattered all over the Internet, we can't allow our children to fall victims to their enticing words".
The man paused and looked at his wife for a brief confirmation, "I heard its a she, but notwithstanding we shouldn't trust people easily, especially the ones we met on the internet, who knows what it could turn to, she may deceive some and ask them to start doing bad things like stealing from their parents".
The woman speaks next, with a different approach from her husband, "Since this issue started I followed it up and even made an account with laâve, you are surprised don't be, I have children and they are at this stage where they think they are always right and shouldn't be controlled, I want to make this clear for some people, since I have an account and I am also an application designer, the girl typically doesn't respond to the messages and as I noted from scrolling through her page, the reason why our children have continued with this act, is because she's willing to listen, and won't judge them irrespective of what they write on her board".
The clip ends, and light disappears from the projector, the presenter is a bit stunned as with the viewers, this is the first parent (not first person) to view this in a different manner.
She soon recovers as she dazzles the camera with yet another smile.
"Quite a shocking revelation, and I must say, expected reactions from parents and adolescents alike, join us next week as we invite the wonder girl or not so mysterious girl behind this peculiar trend".
She flips the script closed, "I am Genevieve Akin reporting for RDC news, thank you".
