Chapter 13: The Call
Let's just say Fort Mead was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I seriously thought that an army base would have put up more of a fight. Or at least brought out some tanks to try an blow us up, but no! We were in and out with Sam's wings in less than 20 minutes. That's when phase two of our save the world plan came into play, kidnapping Agent Sitwell, whom after being described to me did not Sitwell with me. Natasha also gave me that pun.
So now Sam and I are sitting at a table drinking iced tea, waiting for Sitwell's dinner mate to leave his side. We keep waiting for about five minutes as the other man, probably a politician of some sort walks down the steps and grabs his knee and turns to Sitwell. They exchange a few words and then he's off. All that's left are Sitwell's guards.
"You ready for this?" Sam asks, he pauses before he continues, "Once you do this, there's no turning back, you'll be in too deep."
"Sam are you asking if I'm a chicken? Because I'm not and I'm already in too deep" I pause as well and then look at him as he dials his burner under with Pierce's caller ID. "I should still be in prison right now" I say to myself, barely loud enough for myself to hear. Sam just stares at me for a moment before he turns his attention to the voice on the other end of the phone.
"Agent Sitwell, how was lunch? I hear the crab cakes here are delicious" Sam says, staring straight at me. He pauses, I assume listening to Sitwell talk and mouths the words jail? I nod and respond mouthing tell you after we kidnap this guy. Sam chuckles and continues his chat.
"The good looking guy in the sunglasses at your ten o'clock" he pauses and sees Sitwell look in the other direction, "You're other ten o'clock - There you go" Sam says, correcting Sitwell's position. Then I can see that Sitwell has spotted us so Sam and I lift our glasses in a mock toast to Sitwell.
Another pause occurs, followed by Sam's response through the phone, "You're going to go around the corner to your right, there's a grey car two spaces down. The three of us are going to take a little ride."
There's another pause, which I assume Sitwell says something along the lines of 'why would I do that?' That's when Sam responds, smirking as he does so, "Because that tie looks really expensive...and I'd hate to mess it up."
Now we're off to the races. Once Sitwell looked around frantically for the origin of the red dot (which was Natasha) he bolted off to the right, heading towards the car we hot wired.
"Well let's get going, Sitwell's moving faster than I thought he would" Sam says grabbing my arm and nudging me out of my chair. "So you were a jail bird?" he asks abruptly as we quicken our pace.
"Yup, I'm actually an escaped jail bird" I laugh lightly glancing at my feet. For some reason I don't feel as open with Sam as I do with Steve, even though he's a super nice guy.
"What you kill somebody?" he asks again, making me stop.
"NO! Wow is that really what kind of person I am? A murderess?" I say, raising my voice. I feel literal steam coming from my ears. He thinks that I'm a murderess. That I'm a killer! Great, just great. I was actually beginning to warm up to Sam. Guess not. That now shrinks my list of trustworthy friends down to one. (Natasha doesn't rate, no matter how much I enjoy he humour).
Sam grabs my arm again, keeping me moving as we turn the corner and spot Sitwell, nervously leaning on the side of our grey car. We reach Sitwell and I open the back door with my hand and then shove Sitwell in with the other, "Buckle up" I say as I slam the door.
I swing open the passenger door and Sam is already in the opposite seat staring at me with regret and guilt in his eyes. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that. You're a good person Dahlia." Sam says, trying to make the situation better.
I turn to face him quickly and glare at him, "You don't even know me!" I shout, I didn't think that he expected me to be so angry. I didn't even expect the shout until it came out of my mouth. "You don't know what I'm like or how I act, or what kind of moral compass I have. If I even have one!" I shout, a little less harsh now.
Sam just looks at me, his eyes soft and smile small. "Then what did you do?" he asks quietly.
I sigh, suddenly feeling guilty for yelling at this man who I've known for less than two hours and already know that he has a heart of gold. "I hacked into some politicians bank records back in England, they were dirty. I wanted to bring it to the public, show that they were bad. Instead I became the bad guy." I the other way out my window as another voice pipes up. Sitwell.
"Um where are you guys taking me? Because so far we've just been sitting here" he says, his tone as smug as the sky is blue.
I whip around in my seat and fling a golden dagger so close to his throat that the skin indents slightly, "Don't make me mess up your tie." I say in an aggravated tone.
As I turn back to face forward, I see Sam smirk out of the corner of my eye, I then smile back at him and even let out a small nearly inaudible chuckle. Sam then looks at me as we pull out of the parking space, "Sorry, I didn't mean to offend before. And I do think you're a good person. Once I know you for a few more hours then I'll know for sure" he says, a smile playing on his lips. I roll my eyes and look out the window.
In the next few minutes we pull up to a building a few blocks away. Steve and Natasha wait for us at the back. We pull in at the side of the road and Natasha comes up to the car and hauls Sitwell out and up the stairs, heading for the roof. That's where bird boy comes in.
Sam gets out after I do and walks to the trunk. I however walk over to Steve who is leaning on the wall parallel to the car, smirking.
"What are you smiling about?" I ask, heading for the doorway.
"I'm just surprised how well this went" he said, following behind me.
"Why don't you think I've kidnapped someone before? I am a British criminal, you never know what I'm capable of?" I say laughing at myself
"Well I doubt that you've kidnapped anyone, you would have told me back in our therapy car session." he chuckles along with me as we ascend the stairs.
"That is true." I agree with his statement seeing as I pretty much left out no detail when I divulged my life story to Captain Spangles.
"So you and Sam are pretty buddy buddy" Steve remarks, out of the blue
I cock my eyebrow at him and give a look of odd surprise, "I thought match making was Natasha's strong suit?" he chuckles and then I grab his shoulder so that he faces me, "Are you jealous?" I ask dead serious.
Steve's eyes avoid mine for a split second but then lock back onto mine with a twinkle in them, "What do I have to be jealous of?" he asks mischievously.
"Oh please, you're jealous of all this. The accent is probably a turn on too" I laugh full heartedly as I race up the stairs ahead of Steve.
Knowing the super soldier, he catches up almost instantly. "Brits are pretty attractive" he says laughing again.
I know I don't think of him like this, and I'm not over thinking anything, but I'm fairly certain that Captain America just flirted with me. Or at least made an attempt at it. First bird boy and now spangles? I'm losing all my main boy buds to low key flirting. Maybe I'm just analyzing it to carefully, Steve might have been making a funny comment, he did laugh right after. But that look when I asked if he was jealous, usually that is a total tell of a man's interest in a woman. But Steve even said for himself that he wasn't interested in any ladies as of yet. But just maybe?
I'm pulled back to reality as a gust of wind comes from underneath us. The next moment I see a flash of metal wings and a glance from Sam as he shoots up the stairwell, wearing his falcon suit. He shows off even more as he maneuvers his way around the stairs and keeps his pace as he flies to the top. Both Steve and I race up the stairs, not wanting to miss any of the action that is about to unfold.
I'm not sure who I like better with Dahlia, Steve or Sam? Would love to hear from you guys. Vote, comment and share Lovelies!
