Chapter 10: Zola's Algortihm

We continue our advance on the far wall until we reach a door to what appears to be an evidence room. As Natasha and Steve enter I stand by the SHIELD emblem, it's things like these that make people have hope. That's something my stepfather used to say, that symbols which represent the greater side of humanity give people hope for a better world. Yet, now this symbol will not represent hope, it will represent a corrupt organization which may only be saved by an old man, Russian assassin and an escaped convict. That's not exactly reassuring.

"Dal, you'd better come over here" I hear Steve shout from the room the two entered before. I quickly walk over to the door and brush my fingers against the emblem as I pass. I walk around some shelves and see Steve pulling open a bookshelf. Well not a bookshelf, a secret door. I watch as Steve and Natasha enter. "What are you too scared to follow us?" Natasha asks jokingly. I roll my eyes and follow them as she pulls out another gadget, "What's that?" I ask. She looks back and smirks at me, "A high tech code breaker that is an essential for any former KGB assassin."

Steve and I chuckle together at Natasha's sudden humour. But we quickly quiet down as the concealed door swings open to reveal an elevator. I motion for Natasha to go first. She smirks and walks through the threshold, then the captain motions for me to go, "Ladies first" he says politely. I do a dramatic curtesy as I pass to thank him. As I turn back to face him in the elevator, he rolls his eyes at my curtesy. Natasha reaches her hand across my body and presses the only button in the elevator and then we descend deeper into the ground. The doors ding and they slide open. The room is dark, actually it's pitch black. "Must not have paid their electricity bills" I whisper with a chuckle. Steve looks to me and hides a smirk from Natasha.

"Is this how you stay calm when you're afraid?" Natasha asks, I snort slightly as I answer, not wanting to show that I'm scared shitless. "Uh no, I'm not scared. I make jokes because I'm a funny person. HA HA HA". Once I finish, I realize how utterly stupid I sound. "You're scared aren't you?" Steve leans over and whispers, I then nod slightly and I feel him grab my wrist and pull me closer to him.

Natasha searches around for a light switch and soon finds one. Row by row the lights flicker on. You can tell that they haven't been turned on for a while. I don't see what occupies the room right away because my eyes have to adjust to the sudden brightness of the room. When they adjust, I then finally look at my surroundings, it is rows upon rows upon rows of old style computers. They litter the room, but they all seem to converge onto a tall grey computer in the centre of the room, and in front of that are several screens and a desk. Our trio slowly approach the centre of the room where several large screens rest on a long semi circular desk. As we step onto the raised platform where the desk sits we all analyze our surroundings.

Natasha is the first to talk, "This can't be the data point, this technology is ancient" I chuckle a bit and because of my fear I can't help my crack a joke, "Well then Steve you must be even more ancient" he just shoots me a look and rolls his eyes. I glance at Nat and see her slightly amused. But her eyes quickly catch something else, a modern day USB port. Nat walks over to it and plugs in the drive, which turns on all the computers and the wheels within them begin to spin rapidly. Next a computer in front of me turns on and green lettering and a montane voice sounds "Initiate System." I lean over the keyboard and type in YES, "Shall we play a game" I say, making a reference to one of my favourite movies. I then look back at Steve to see if he understand that reference.

"I understood that reference...I saw the movie" Steve says, slightly annoyed by me. The screen in front of us begins to form a green pixelated face and with that face came a voice.

"Rogers, Stephen Born 1918" I looked above the screen and saw a camera "Austin, Dahlia Born 1985" finally the camera moved to Nat "Romanoff, Natalia Alianovna Born 1984" I look to Nat, "This is some kind of recording" she says, "I am not a recording fräulein" the machine responds and all of us just stare at each other. How is this possible, I think? Well then again how am I possible?

The machine continues "I may not be the man I was when the captain took me prisoner in 1945, but I am." The three of us then turn our heads to a picture on the screen, a picture of a man.

"Is this a real guy?" I say motioning to the computer screen with the pixelated face.

The captain just nods

"You know this thing?" Natasha asks. Trying to get more information from the captain than I did.

"Barton Zola was a German scientist who worked for the red skull, he's been dead for years." Steve begins as he walks around the computer platform.

"First correction, I am Swiss. Second, look around you. I have never been more alive" the computer, or should I say Zola responded in an extremely spine chilling tone. That's when Zola continues. "In 1972, I received a terminal diagnosis. Science could not save my body. My mind however, was worth saving. On 200,000 feet of data banks. You are standing in my brain."

I couldn't say for sure but when Zola said that I think I saw Natasha shiver. Well at least I know I did. His brain really? Could this get any creepier?

"How did you get here?" Steve asks, standing back at my side.

"I was invited" responds Zola

"It's operation paper clip, after World War Two, SHIELD recruited German scientists with strategic value" Natasha added, glancing at Steve and I.

"They thought I could help their cause, but I also helped my own" Zola began

But Steve cut him off, interrupting the robot, "Hydra died with the red skull"

"Cut off one head two more shall take its place" Zola said flashing the Hydra symbol and splitting himself into two faces.

"Prove it" Steve says, trying to be all macho. I have a feeling that Zola will do exactly what he says and more. I think we're about to unearth some dirty little secrets.

Pictures flash on all the screens, flipping through countless black and white images, "Accessing archives" Zola begins when a picture of a man with a Nazi flag behind him appears, "Hydra was founded on the belief that humanity could not be trusted with its own freedom. What we did not realize was if you tried to take that freedom, they resist. The war taught us much. We realized that humanity needed to surrender its freedom willingly. After the war, SHIELD was founded and I was recruited. The new Hydra grew like a beautiful parasite, inside SHIELD. For 70 years Hydra has been secretly feeding crisis - wreaking war. And when history did not cooperate, history was changed."

"That's impossible, SHIELD would have stopped you." Natasha said, trying to reason with the facts.

That is why I don't believe in organizations, I believe in people and sometimes even that doesn't work out so well for me.

"Accidents will happen" Zola says as articles of Howard Stark's death appear. "Hydra created a world so chaotic, that humanity is finally ready to give up its freedom, to gain its security. Once the purification process is complete, Hydra's new world order will arise. We won Captain, your death amounts to the same as your life, A ZERO SUM" Steve loses it completely and slams his fist into Zola's screen, shattering it. The sound of a dying computer fills the air, but Zola's voice once again fills it as his face appears on an adjacent monitor.

"As I was saying" But he is cut off by Steve's angered voice, "What's on this drive?"

"Project Insight requires - Insight...so I created an Algorithm"

Zola is cut off again, but by Natasha, "What kind of Algorithm? What does it do?"

"The answer to your question is fascinating, unfortunately...you will be to dead to hear about it"

That's when doors in front of the elevator begin to close, trying to seal us in, but Steve throws his shield at it. To our dismay, the shield bounces off and the doors close. Steve catches his shield as it rica shays off a wall. Then something in Natasha's pocket buzzes and she pull it out.

"Guys we got a bogey, short range ballistic. Thirty seconds tops"

"Who fired it!" I shout at Natasha, freaked out of my mind. I'm 26, I haven't lived that long, I haven't done so many things I want to do, I do not want to die today!

"SHIELD" Natasha responds, her expression solemn.

"I'm afraid I have been stalling, Captain" I grab the USB as Steve and Nat look for a possible safe zone, but Zola keeps talking "Admit it captain, it's better this way. We are both of us - out of time" That's when Steve lifts a steel grate off of a rectangle hole in the floor and jumps in, quickly motioning us to jump in after him. Nat and I sprint as I see flames from the corner of my eye. We jump in and Steve pits his shield on top of us, knowing that it won't hold I create a larger golden shield around us, protecting us from debris.

I don't know how long I hold the shield, it seems like for ever and my arms begin to weaken because of the weight. I scream out in frustration as I feel a huge amount of weight sit on top of us. That's when the sound of crashing stops. I look at Steve and Natasha who huddle next to me. I quickly use my last remaining strength to push off the debris so we can make an escape. As I hear the rocks fall around us, I completely loose my strength and my knees buckle beneath me. Before I am consumed by darkness I don't feel a pain in my head, I feel someone catch me, harsh whispers from Natasha and Steve and shouts in the distance as I feel myself being moved.
