The Golden Cove

"I'm done eating, can I go play with my toys?" A young boy no older than 10 years old asked. "But we have a surprise for you, Jordan, dear," His dad said and his mom nodded.

Jordan scratched his combed black hair and blinked his black eyes twice. What could be the surprise?

"Where is it?" Jordan excitedly said, jumping up and down like a hyper dog.

"You're always hyper for a surprise, I should have known!" His mom teased. She had black hair like Jordan and had pale blue eyes.

Jordan then looked around his living room. His cabin-style living room had a roaring fire, warm colors and plush fabrics, and unique artwork. It was decorated with rough stone and rough wood. There were natural wooden floors and soaring ceilings decorated with old wooden beams.

"Haha, calm down. Your surprise hasn't come yet!" His dad said and smiled at Jordan. "Give me a clueeee, pleaseeeeee" Jordan begged.

"No clues! Besides, it will come soon!" His dad said and combed back his strawberry-blonde hair.

*DING DONG*

"That must be your surprise!" His mom exclaimed and walked to the door. She then opened the door and a familiar face appeared.

"Grandma?" Jordan asked and his dimples began showing up as he smiled. "Surprise!" yelled his grandmother. She was so loud, the entire neighborhood could hear her. Jordan ran up to her with huge smiles on his face.

He barely saw his grandmother and was stunned to see her.

His grandmother hugged him so tight. "Look at you! You look so much taller than before!"

Jordan giggled. His grandmother was a delicate woman with long, graying auburn hair that was pulled in a tied bun. She had the warmest smile that was warmer than the fireplace in the living room and had the most caring eyes that Jordan has ever seen. She was cheerful and adventurous, just what he needed. She always wore bright green dresses and her signature

shoes with blue laces and white heels. She always wore her reading glasses on the end of a gold chain, like a locket, and tucked them into the top of her dress.

"I had no idea you were coming!" Jordan exclaimed.

"That wouldn't be a surprise, wouldn't it?" His dad said with a wink, his blue eyes laced with happiness.

"What are you doing here?" Jordan asked.

"Do I need an excuse to visit my grandson?" Grandma asked as she ruffled his hair. "Would you like something to eat, mom?" His mother asked.

"No thank you! I've already eaten!" His grandmother said and made herself comfortable with the couch in the living room.

"Where have you been?" Jordan asked as he sat next to her. He always looked forward to hearing his grandmother's stories.

"Ah the typical, playing chess with my friends, finding stories for you to read..." His grandmother said and bopped his nose. "Retirement is boring, but hey, at least I get to see you!"

"Well, I and mom will be in our room. Don't make the living room a mess when I come back!" His dad said and his parents walked upstairs.

"Are you going to stay overnight?" Jordan asked.

"If you want me to," His grandmother said with her trademark smirk.

"Of course!" Jordan exclaimed. "How is Goldie?"

Goldie was his grandmother's pet hamster that had white fur and honey spots around his body. "She's fine. I wanted to bring her but she seemed a little tired so I left her there."

"It's getting a little late," Jordan said and let out a yawn. "I think I'll head to bed now, tomorrow we can talk and spend time together."

"Alright," His grandmother said with a smile. "But, before you go, would you like to hear a story? It will help you sleep better!"

"Uhm, maybe tomorrow? Grandma, it's almost past my bedtime." Jordan said and rubbed his eyes.

"That's quite alright, dear. Now, would you like to hear the story?"

"What?" Jordan asked, confused by the answer. "That's not what I meant."

"Sweetheart, please. It will only take a few minutes." His grandmother said, and gently placed her hands on his hands. "It's a special story, and I just need some feedback."

"Uh okay," Jordan said. "I can go to bed after this, right?"

"Of course," His grandmother said and cleared her throat. "Now listen up, because this story is called The Golden Cove..."

***********

I'll tell you of a time, under the sunshine, where mermaids would laugh and play. They lived in a cove of golden sands and seafoam. Where for the rest of their lives, they would stay...

The mermaid's beauty spread all over the land, enchanting sailors to ask for their hands, but it wasn't only then, among them... was a fairy.

She could spar, she could fight, but yet she was elegant, light, and airy.

The fairy often preached to them all, but the worse of them all was the pirates she said:

"The outside is where you'll meet your downfall!" The young fairy said she stood on a rock that overlooked the mermaids. "From thieves to killers to princesses at the ball! They'll spot you, lure you, and strike you dead! They pillage and lie, making oceans red! Stay away from them, unless you want to lose your head! Listen well, for this is not a test! After all, I would know best.

But it just so happened, on one fateful day...

"PIRATES!" The young fairy cried, giving the mermaids a shock. "THEY ARE COMING THIS WAY!"

With no-slip, she flew off to war with no delay. She told the mermaids:

"You all must leave! Down to the depts of the sea! Where you are safe, and men cannot reach!" The fairy shouted.

Though the mermaids were curious, they did hide, not at the bottom of the sea, but at the side, where they couldn't be seen, and watch the fairy fight.

And so, the fairy landed on the ship, sword in hand. She loudly delivered a single line:

"I WILL MAKE YOU PAY FOR YOUR CRIMES!" The fairy shouted as she moved closer.

The sailors turned white as their clothing.

"W-we mean no harm!" One of the sailors trembled. "We were just crossing here!"

The fairy couldn't, no, wouldn't hear. She raised her sword as the sailors cowered in fear.

It was terribly one-sided that day. Her fists cannot hold a sword at bay. With one slash, she killed every single person on the ship.

When the fairy caressed the remains of war, and when all the mermaids were free, she looked down into their soft hazel eyes, and prepared to feast.

With this, the mermaids give a shout:

"What have you done?" The mermaids exclaimed. "You killed an innocent one!"

The fairy replied, with crazed golden eyes:

"Can't you see? I'm protecting you!" The fairy shouted as her auburn hair flowed in the wind.

Most fairytales have happy endings, and this one does too. The mermaids fought the fairy with their own spells, and in the end, the fairy fell.

************

"Now it's time to bid the story farewell," His grandma said with a gentle smile. "You should go to bed, it's almost twelve."

"Grandma! That story was frightening! What if the fairy eats me? I don't wanna go to sleep at all now!" Jordan said and hugged his grandma tightly.

"Oh, sweetheart. It's all made up." His grandma said and patted his head. "Can't you see? I'm protecting you. After all, I would know best."
