◕ 2. LIMERENCE

A d o n i s R e f e r r o

THE PIERCING GREY eyes of the girl in front of me confronted me with all their might. My heart beat quickened at the sight of her; her blonde hair cascading down her shoulders complimented her round face and her narrow eyes.

Her facial expression carried a sense of fascination that made me feel uneasy so I pulled my eyes away from her and looked at the crowd of her frail pack members.

Starving children huddled close to their parents as they watched me in fear. Families held each other tightly by the loose rags of their clothes.

My eyes eventually found their way back to her and a feeling I have not felt in a while consumed my body...

Passion.

"I have food..." I say out loud causing the confused pack to look at each other with question.

The Beta, who so daringly tried to fool me into thinking he was an Alpha widens his eyes before becoming skeptical.

"Fredrick..." I call over my Beta. "Send some men over to the caravan we brought with us into the woods. They need food."

Fredrick eyes me for a long second as if trying to see my motives. I wasn't surprised; this wasn't the type of Alpha he was used to seeing. This wasn't a side I showed often.

He shakes his head before rounding up a few of our men and taking off into the woods. The crowd of hungry pack members continued to stare at me in awe...and quiet.

"T-thank you." Their Beta suddenly says. "We are very thankful for your mercy."

I nodded at him...before my attention focused back to the girl with those grey eyes. When I turned to where she was, she was gone. One of their warriors must of took her.

"An Alpha takes what is needed, a successful Alpha assist those who need it." I answer.

My warriors and I watched the hungry pack as they devoured the food that was given to them. I couldn't help but crack a little smile at the little ones who seemed to consume more than their elders.

"They must have been starving for weeks. I have never seen people so desperate to eat twice their body count." I said to Beta Fredrick.

"Alpha, what are you doing?" He asked giving me a look of slight disbelief. "We came here to-"

"I know." I cut him off.

Fredrick scoffs. "Then why are we here? Why are you suddenly feeding this pack with our resources?"

I turned my head to meet his eyes, my eyes attacking his with authority. "Don't question my actions Fredrick..." I growled.

Fredrick fell silent and clenched his jaw slightly before shaking his head once again. "I should take a few warriors to stand watch at their border. They said rogues attacked them...it's still dark out. They could be near to attack twice."

I glanced over at him before nodding my head approvingly. "That's fine, but don't do nothing more without my command."

Fredrick nods before rounding up around 1/3 of our warriors and heading back to the border.

The sky was still dark as night even though morning would be approaching soon. The only illumination came from the torches that were placed around their pack.

The pack's absent Alpha was evident due to how far behind technological wise they were from other packs.

Suddenly, the smooth blonde locks and the silver eyes returned back to my vision and I watched closely as the girl rushed towards a wooden table with an older girl and one younger who slightly resembled her.

I watch as she looks at the food in front of them and smiles widely before hugging the little girl who sat next her. They must be sisters.

I wanted to stop watching her...but I couldn't. She was beautiful...and shallowly that was all I knew about her.

A wave of intensity washed over my body when a lean guy with brown skin and brown eyes reached from behind her and wrapped her in his arms.

I growled to myself before looking away.

"You have outdone yourself," their pack's Beta says suddenly walking over to me. "You have given my pack a meal that they haven't had in months. Thank you. We owe you."

"You don't owe me anything."

"I do," he persists. "You could have executed my whole pack...but you didn't...and I can't seem to understand why."

My eyes instinctively look over to her. I swallow hard before looking at the Beta.

"What is your name?" I question him.

"Beta Damon of the 7th Legion pack."

"Alpha Adonis of the Prime Regiment pack." I tell him proudly before looking towards the direction of their border. "Well, it seems my pack and I must leave. We hope your pack will continue to build to withstand another attack."

"It was an honor to meet you, Alpha Adonis." I heard Beta Damon say.

"As to you,"

"It's about time," Otis, my head warrior says in a jokingly matter. "We were thinking our Alpha went soft on us."

I gave him a sly grin before nodding my head towards the caravan. "We need to head back to the pack before sunrise. The caravan tends to waste time. If we shift-"

Suddenly a sharp pain corrupts my chest causing me to groan and fall on my knees. My fist clenched as the pain intensified its pressure.

"Alpha!" Warrior Otis and Beta Fredrick said in unison.

"I'm okay!" I bark before weakly standing back up. My breathing began to slow down as the pressure began to relax.

I look at my warriors who are staring at me in worry. "Get the caravan's ropes set up," I cough. "We must leave now."

Obeying my command, they immediately got to work. I hiss before taking a deep breath trying to stabilize my body.

"You claimed her, didn't you?"

I look at Beta Fredrick with slight surprise before shrugging him away. He must of saw the way I was watching that girl back at the 7th Legion pack.

When a wolf, especially an Alpha, sees someone they would like have as a mate...they claim them. It is an unofficial attachment towards the person, yet an attachment that the one who is claimed cannot feel until he or she accepts being mates with said person.

It is an unfortunate position to be put in for the one who has chosen to claim someone. One will feel every inch of desire for this person physical and mentally.

For an Alpha...this desire is even more aggressive.

"You did, didn't you?" Fredrick pushes again.

I look at him in aggravation before sighing to myself.

"Adonis, if you claimed that girl...you do realize what this means? It's irreversible until she rejects or accepts your claim. You are an Alpha! You don't have time to be chasing-"

"Don't," I snarl. "I know what I did."

Apart of me was content with myself for internally claiming her but another was regretful. I acted out of impulse and infatuation. I should have gave myself time. Time to at least know her.

I began to walk toward my warriors who were beginning to finish securing the caravan.

"You have to go back." Fredrick's voice is heard again. "You'll suffer without her. You need her."

I kept walking.

"You're too humble to admit it, but you know damn well that pack won't stand on its own. There are children and the elderly! They need assistance. They need your leadership."

I turn around.

"What are you saying?"

"An Alpha takes what is needed..." he answers. "And assists those who need it."

I knew right then, even under the wrath of my limerence for the one who I ached for, what I needed to do.

"Otis!" I called.

"Alpha," he answers.

"You and Fredrick let everyone know..." I felt the words slip out of my mouth so smoothly and so easily.

"We're heading back..."
