◕ 14. MASKS (Part II)
A d o n i s ◕ R e f e r r o
IT WAS TIME and as I straightened out my tie and fixed my blazer, my mind swirled playing out endless scenarios in my head of how tonight would go.
Tonight would not only be the first Masquerade ball with the newly integrated pack, but my chance at a first dance with Farah. The first time I would truly be able to embrace her in front of my people.
That is...if she wears that special mask.
"Adonis?" My mother calls knocking on the walls of my office. "The party will begin in 40 minutes. Your father and I just wanted to be sure you weren't going to commit the same stunt you did last year."
I turned to her with a sly grin. "Like not show up until the final moments of it all?"
My mother rolls her eyes. "Yes...exactly that."
She walks further into the room closing the door behind her. She sighs before sitting on one of the leather chairs.
"My Alpha of a son, you never told me what was made out of your trip to see the Ethereal Queen."
My body froze before my eyes traveled to the floor. I eyed the mahogany wood hard scrummaging for a proper explanation.
I couldn't tell her the truth for that would be against Farah's wishes. Also the things the Ethereal Queen spoke of were violent and threatening...would telling my mother put Farah at risk?
"She told me that I had no choice but to wait until the woman I claimed rejects or accepts it. " I lie.
I could hear the continuous tapping of my mother's feet stop.
"But this woman doesn't even know what you have done?" My mother questions.
"I told her..." I reveal.
At least that wasn't a lie.
"Oh my moon goddess," she gasps. "What did she say?"
"She can't make up her mind." I tell her.
Somewhat of the truth.
When my eyes found their way back to the former Luna, I could see her eyes twitch and her lips curl into a frown.
"How dare she play games with my son? You are an Alpha. Does she understand how many women would kill to be in her position? You have sought after her, and she's just gonna allow you to endure all the pain of the claim bond until it's convenient for her to make a decision?"
If only she knew Farah felt the bond too.
"Mother, it's not her fault. I made an impulsive decision. I claimed a girl I didn't even take the time to get to know and she has every right to be upset. I deserve this."
That was truth as well.
My mother's angry expression turns nervous. "Adonis, there will be plenty of young woman at the ball tonight and Jaxine amongst them. Whomever this girl is, it's time to move on. This pack needs a Luna and you need to uphold your future."
I watch as she gets up from the chair and heads for the door.
"Do you believe in fated mates?" The question slipped off my lips without proper thought.
My mother stops her strides and looks back to me with an unreadable expression. "Fated mates have not existed on this earth in years. So yes, they were very much real but they do not happen at all anymore."
My mother's eyes searched mine intensely. "Why such a question, son?"
"It must have been hard, that's all. Searching for so long to find that one person who made everything in one's kingdom make sense." I answered her.
My mother nodded before leaving rather abruptly.
It was hard...very much so.

The blaring lights shone all around the massive ballroom; they danced from wall to wall as the music guided the masked dancers in step.
My mind raced and I could feel my wolf stir. The woman that stained my every thought was all I wanted to see.
Though my face concealed, the scintillating crown on my head gave me away. I received lots of praise as I brushed passed many groups in search of my grey eyed mate.
"Adonis," A familiar seducing voice traveled to my ears.
Jaxine's nimble fingers traveled up my arm and I froze in place.
"Looking for me?" She questions, her voice now vibrant with excitement.
It was at that moment where, a pure coincidence, that a familiar mask captured my attention as a beautiful young woman walked passed. Her blonde hair in a messy bun and a sliver dress that hugged the little curves of her body.
"Jaxine, I must go."
I found myself pulling away from her and following the strong scent. I followed her path to the front of the ballroom dodging dozens of dancers while doing so.
Her back was faced to me as she stopped her steps and stands still clearly looking out of place. As I approached closer, I couldn't help but continue to marvel at her beauty.
All my intuitions were confirmed when the young woman turns herself to me.
Our eyes locked spontaneously with so much different emotion clouded in them.
There she was in that patterned black mask.
Farah.
She narrowed her eyes before granting me a challenging grin.
I watch as she spun around before heading towards the dance floor moving her hips gently to the rhythm of the music.
I watched as a man nearby took notice of her and I growled to myself.
What was she trying to do to me?
I found myself heading over to the middle of the floor along with her and wrapping my arms gently around her waist and leading us into a dance.
"Don't provoke me, Farah." I whispered into her ear causing goosebumps to form on her smooth skin.
"Or what?" Her voice rang out as her grey eyes continued to stare me down.
"Or—"
"You!" A voice rang out the entire ballroom echoing off the walls and into the ears of those who attended.
At that instant the synchronous dancing came to an end with everyone stopping their movement and turning the same direction.
My mother's passionate eyes looked past me as she marched further into the ballroom. Her eyes looked to Farah, and I stepped in front of the grey eyed girl not knowing what was to come.
"Mother..." I spoke with with authority.
"Ladies and Gentlemen!" My mother hollered not even looking my way before walking around me to get a better look at Farah who was stiff in the body.
What was she about to do?
The eyes that belonged to those in ballroom watched us closely and as seconds passed , I grew more and more protective of my mate.
My mother got on her knees causing those present to voice their reactions to her act of submission.
"The future Luna of The Prime Regiment pack! And now, never seen before since hundreds of years ago, the fated mate of Alpha Adonis Referro!
It was then that the crumbling reality around me began to grow heavy and stagnant.
My mother had just exposed our deepest secret. My body grew numb as those haunting words left her lips. How did she find out? What gave us away? Was it our conversation earlier?
...the ethereal queen?
Exclaims and shouts erupted everywhere. Questions were thrown all around like gauntlets being thrown to the ground. As Alpha, I had the urge to quiet everyone down and to remind them of their place, but I was more concerned about Farah; I looked to Farah growing concerned for her well being.
"Leave, my love. I'll deal with the people." I directed into her ear.
Farah's identity was still concealed by her mask. If she left now, no one would know the true identity of whom my mother was speaking of.
Farah looks to me hesitantly before turning the other direction and heading for the door with the eyes of all following her in confusion.
It was short lived because Farah trips over her dress knocking herself down to her knees.
Everyone gasps and my body grew cold remembering the words of the Ethereal Queen: You can act upon your desires but just know once you do...you will awaken a whole army of evil.
Farah's beautiful face was exposed for everyone to see and at that moment everyone was able to put a face to this future Luna...this fated mate my mother spoke of.
The mask had fallen.
To be continued...
