◕ 12. HUSH

A d o n i s R e f e r r o

GOLDEN SKIES SHOWERED the outpost above and I felt my body bathe in it. The morning sun was beginning to come out from the forests and illuminate the entire wilderness.

The lake nearby ripples in peace as I take a look at my reflection.

The venture to Outpost One was a success, but I knew the red breeds were still a threat, and they were still out on a hunt.

The aching in my chest returned as I thought about Farah. She finally knows that we are fated mates and the aftermath was—let's just say I knew she wouldn't be speaking to me soon.

She fell under utter silence when I revealed the fact she was mine. I had her in my grasp and in my arms but after the revelation she backed away and left the west ridge room never returning.

I couldn't tell whether she was angry or just bewildered—maybe it was a little bit of both. I never even got explain to her everything.

Her head was filled with assumptions that I needed to squander but how could I? I don't even think she wants to talk to me.

"Alpha?" Frederick, my Beta calls me before I heard his footsteps approach. "We need you inside. The warriors aren't sure if outpost two is within our realms. We need your direction."

I looked over at him before giving him a look of assertion.

I found myself heading inside the outpost and into the designated training room. My fifty-nine warriors were engaged in drills and exercises, and I watched as Otis looked over at them observingly. He catches my eyes before giving me respectful nod.

"Warriors," I spoke instantly capturing all of their attention. "We will head back to the pack at dawn. We schedule a march to the second outpost a week prior from now. Keep training but at the crack of dawn we head back."

I watch as they all lowered their heads before continuing their drills.

"She's out in the second drill room with Becca." Fredrick tells me all of a sudden.

I turn to him with furrowed brows.

"I witnessed her last night, and had asked Becca about the absence of Xavier. Becca told me she had gotten hold of Xavier's uniform and had pretended to be number 14. Adonis, Farah is—"

"Farah is what?" I growled daring him to say something foul of my mate.

He widens his eyes. "I was just going to say that Farah is lucky that she is safe. The red breeds could have harmed her—"

"I was there. I protected her." I snapped.

"C'mon Adonis. I know you claimed her but I know you can see how dangerous her stunt was. She could have put us all in jeopardy." He retorts.

"Fredrick," I gritted his name out. "She's my claim, let me handle it. We no longer speak of this. You do your job and guide the warriors and let me handle the rest as Alpha."

With that I walked away heading for our alternative drilling room. If Farah really was in there we needed to talk. I needed to explain myself.

The rhythmic hits entered my ears as I approached the room. The soft, and feminine grunts filled the room.

There she was, with the assistance of Rebecca,
punching the punching bag with all her might. I observed for a few moments before I walked over to the two sparring girls.

Rebecca turns to me with an raised brow before she backed away from the punching bag. Farah didn't seem to notice and kept rapidly punching the object with all her might. Her petite arms never breaking a sweat.

My eyes trailed down her small body. She sported nothing but a tight sports bra and a low cut sleeveless hoodie and black spandex biker shorts.

"Farah," I called her standing on the other side of her. When she didn't respond I gave Rebecca a look and she shrugs her shoulders before starting for the door to leave us alone.

"Farah, you never even gave me a chance to explain..." I attempted to grab her attention.

She ignored my voice though and rapidly fired at the bag. The sounds of her small fists hitting it aggressively echoed off the walls.

"Farah..." I called once again before I grab a hold of the punching bag preventing its movement.

She huffs before her face scrunches up in anger and she throws aggravated shots at me but they never dared to land.

Her anger didn't intimidate me, if anything I found it cute. I didn't flinch but grinned causing her to grow more frustrated. She stormed away and I followed her steps.

"Adonis, let me be." She speaks to me for the first time.

"We need to talk and you know that." I persist.

She grabs a water bottle that was sitting on one of the steel tables before she takes a sip. We stood a few feet away from each other glaring at one another in silence.

She reaches for a towel that also laid on a steel shelf against the wall but was too short to reach. I grabbed it for her before handing it over to her. Our bodies were now close.

Almost as close as they were yesterday when I had her pinned against a wall and under the conquer of my lips.

She sighs before her mouth twitched. "You claimed me without my consent! How the hell is that fair?"

"That's what I'm trying to explain! Farah, we were bound before I even claimed you. You and I are fated mates."

She scoffs before shaking her head. "Fated mates aren't real, Adonis! They don't exist anymore."

"Farah, I promise you. I spoke to the Ethereal Queen who is a well respected witch in my pack. All the prophecies she delivers are real." I argue.

"Alpha Adonis," she breathes out. "own up to what you have done. I will never accept your claim and I am not saying this lightly."

I watch as she walks away swaying her hips side to side as she strutted towards the doorway, and the emotion boiling up inside me continues to arise.

"Really? You really don't think I'm telling the truth?" I questioned. "Then how come you feel it too? If you were just my claim, you wouldn't feel the pull unless you accepted my claim. But no, you felt the pull the first day we laid eyes on each other and you just won't allow yourself to admit it. "

She stops her strides and turns her body around to face me. Her mouth parted before her lips pursed together. Her eyes flash me this daunting look. She sucks in a breath before turning back away and walking out of the room.

A uncontrollable growl escapes my lips as I watch my mate leave me. She was strong minded which I adored that about her but she was stubborn as hell.
I mean, she even said it herself when I saved her from those red breeds. I saw the way she looked at me last night when she was aware of what we were to each other. Farah knew...why was she acting as if this was a contrived story?

Eventually...eventually she would come to terms with what we were.

Or so I hoped.

The cheers and cries of glee when we returned back to the pack echoed in my ears. Hundreds of my pack members were gathered outside right in front of the pack house, yet this fueled feeling of anger and contempt flooded my mind.

I walked towards the crowd and greeted the excited members. I raised my hand up causing them all to fall quiet and to watch me intently.

"Where's Xavier?" I questioned, my voice booming. "He's one of the warriors from the newly integrated pack! Where is he?"

I could see Fredrick give me a look of question before realization hit his eyes and he mimics my hardened look.

Whispers diffused throughout the crowd before he revealed himself from the crowd. His face maintaining a solidified look. My mind went red and the anger growing inside ruptured like a volcano.

"Xavier!" I could hear Farah holler before she pushed past the warriors standing around her and approached him. Her grey eyes fell on me and she halts her strides. A mix of guilt and ambivalence lingered in them.

Xavier slowly approached me before stopping a few feet away. He turned his head back to the crowd of members behind him and looked to his former Beta who watched us with skepticism.

"I'm your Alpha now. You no longer look to him. You look to me." I ordered causing Xavier to turn back to me with a scowl.

He lets out a chuckle. "You will never be my Alpha...I will—"

My fist slamming into jaw stole the words from his lips and the impact could be heard around us. Gasps and shrieks of surprise are made by bystanders.

I no longer felt like myself. I was nothing but a hollow Alpha possessed by the demons of my darkest anger and jealousy.

"You put her in danger! You risked the whole mission for us! We never were able to make it to outpost two because it was too risky to proceed without our original line up!" I shouted at him as he rests his hand against his jaw.

"No!" Farah yells sprinting closer to the scene. "It was me! It was me! I convinced him to let me do this! Please, spare him."

His eyes full of loath look to me before he spits at my feet. "C'mon man! Finish what you started!"

I clenched my fists tighter ready to throw another blow but soft hands touched the side of my left arm.

I turn around and my eyes met her grey ones. Her face was strained and her eyes were intense as she shook her head at me. I felt my body begin to relax and I turned back to Xavier who observed us both.

"Khalid and Luka!" I shouted causing the two warriors to march over to me. "Take him. I'll deal with him later."

As Xavier is escorted away those all around gazed at Farah and I with astounded faces. I looked down upon Farah releasing a shaky breath. She gazes at me reluctantly before biting her bottom lip at the attention.

"You are all dismissed!" I shouted at the top of my lungs causing everyone around to scatter away to their jobs and destinations.

My warriors who stood a few feet behind left with Otis and Fredrick leading them away for drills.

Just like that, we were alone.

I knew it wouldn't be long before news of this stunt reached the ears of my parents. It wouldn't be long before questions and rumors were passed around the entire pack. It wouldn't be long before I had to answer them.

The ocean waves of the my territory's coast could be heard through the silence.

"Adonis," Farah says breaking the quiet. "You can't punish him for what I did. I am the one who convinced him to give me his uniform. I'm the one who begged him to let me go out there. Whatever it is you have against him, drop it. He's important to me, he's been with me through thick and thin—through the unimaginative. Please just take it easy..."

Her words sparked an indescribable feeling in my heart. I looked away from those tempting grey eyes that watched me trying to decipher my thoughts.

"Alpha Adonis..." She mutters.

"Farah, you're important to me." I tell her. "Therefore I'm only looking at your interest here. You could have died out there. If I wasn't there to protect you—"

"I don't need your protecting! Adonis, you barely know me."

"Exactly," I retort. "Yet I still feel the need to take upon that role. If that doesn't show you that what I said about us being fated mates is true...then I don't know what will."

Her mouth parts and her eyes soften for a split second before growing hard once again. "How can I trust your word when you claim me without my permission? Fated mates or not that was out of line."

"I know," I admit. "but you can't keeping lying to yourself. You can't keep telling yourself that you don't feel anything...because I know you do."

She frowns, her grey orbs growing more conflicted. "Let's not speak of this anymore." Her voice now barely above a whisper. "For now, this should stay between us until proven true. This shouldn't involve anyone else."

"You mean him." I growl causing her lips to form a straight line. "You don't want him to know what we are."

She sucks in a breath. "What we might be." She corrects.

I bring my pointer finger to her jaw tracing her jawline. She closes her eyes at the sensation and slowly I could see her tense muscles relax. I remove my finger causing her eyes to snap open and her cheeks to heat up in embarrassment.

"Don't tell me that what we feel isn't pure or true. Don't call me a liar, Farah." I tell her lowly with all seriousness.  "And eventually everyone will see what my presence does to you...even him."

To be continued...
