Attempted Murder
~Tony POV~
Soon after the wedding and everything, Don Corleone, his son Santino, Tom Hagen, his adopted son/consigliere, and myself were meeting together to talk about someone who's wanting to make a deal with the Don.
Over time, Don Corleone had made me his protege, so I could get an idea on how this business works, and the ups and downs of it. I met Santino who had such a temper that I really don't want to be around him that much.
I didn't mind being the Don's protege though, but during the time, I just couldn't stop thinking about Rosana, she's just so beautiful that I had dreams about her and I together as one. Hopefully I get to see her again.
When Tom, came back, the Don had to say something.
Corleone: You're not too tired, are you Tom?
Tom: No, I slept on the plane. Who's this kid?
Corleone: Tom, meet my protege, Tony Columbo. Tony, this is my consigliere, Tom Hagen.
We both shook hands as he seemed friendly enough.
Tony: Nice to meet you, Mr. Hagen.
Tom: Please, Tom is better.
Tony: Alright.
Tom: I got the Sollozzo notes here.
He started taking out some paperwork about this Turk and we had to know what he's about.
I'm interested in this so I'm hoping to learn more.
Tom: Now... Sollozzo is known as The Turk. He's supposed to be very good with a knife, but only in matters of some sort of reasonable complaint. His business is narcotics. He has fields in Turkey, where they grow the poppy. In Sicily, he has plants to process them into heroin. He needs cash, he needs protection from the police. He'll give a piece of the action. I couldn't find out how much. The Tattaglia Family is behind him here in New York. They have to be in it for something.
Corleone: What about his prison record?
Tom: Two terms: one in Italy, one here. He's known as a top narcotics man.
Corleone: Santino, what do you think?
Santino: A lot of money in that white powder.
Corleone: Tony?
Tony: I say no, mostly because my sister died from narcotics and I don't want it anywhere near this business.
Corleone: So you're saying it's not good for business?
Tony: I'm not saying it's not good for business, I'm saying we should avoid it because if we take part in this with Sollozzo, people could end up dying like my sister.
Corleone: Tom?
Tom: Well, I say yes. There's more money in narcotics than anything else. If we don't get into it, somebody else will, maybe one of the top five Families, maybe all of them. With that money, they can buy more police and political power, then they come after us. Now we have the unions and the gambling, which are the best things to have, but narcotics is the thing of the future. If we don't get a piece of that action, we risk everything we have, not now but 10 years from now.
Santino: So? What's your answer going to be, Pop?
The Don was silent, thinking about his answer. I really hope it's a refusal, like my answer. I really don't want to see drugs happening in this Family because if we have it, people like my sister are gonna end up dying.
~One Day Later~
We were now in a meeting with this guy and we had to make sure that this guy's legit.
Like I said, I'm gonna stay quiet and study their body language, dialogue, and how they operate because if I plan on running my own Family, I have to learn from the best. The best meaning...
Sollozzo: Don Corleone.
I was sitting between Santino and Tom, in case Santino tried anything.
Sollozzo: I need a man who has powerful friends. I need a million dollars in cash. I need, Don Corleone, those politicians that you carry in your pocket, like so many nickels and dimes.
Corleone: What is the interest for my Family?
Sollozzo: 30%. In the first year, your end should be three, four million dollars, and then it would go up.
Corleone: And what is the interest for the Tattaglia Family?
He was smirking and it seemed Tom was right, he's backed up by the Tattaglias. It seemed he did his research and I didn't doubt him for one second.
Sollozzo: My compliments. I'll take care of the Tattaglias, out of my share.
Corleone: So I receive 30% for finance, political influence and legal protection? That's what it's about?
Sollozzo: That's right.
Corleone: Why do you come to me? Why do I deserve this, generosity?
Sollozzo: If you consider a million dollars in cash for just finance, te salud, Don Corleone.
The Don came up and poured some water into the Turk's glass and said this.
Corleone: I said that I would see you, because I heard that you were a serious man, to be treated with respect.
Before he sat down, he swept his lap and sat down, giving his answer.
Corleone: But, I must say no to you, and I'll give you my reason. It's true, I have a lot of friends in politics, but they wouldn't be friendly very long if they find out my business was in drugs instead of gambling, which they regard as a harmless vice, but drugs is a dirty business.
Sollozzo: Don Corleone.
Corleone: It don't- It doesn't make any difference to me what a man does for a living, you understand. But your business is...a little dangerous.
Sollozzo: If you're worried about security, the Tattaglias will guarantee it.
Santino: Are you telling me that the Tattaglias would guarantee our...
I slugged his arm to stop him from talking, not to hard, just hard enough to make him look at me with a glare as I returned it to him.
He had to speak while his father was still in a conversation with this Turkey and I had to make sure I shut him up. I looked at the Don and he seemed appreciative for what I've done as he kept talking.
Corleone: I have a sentimental weakness for my children, and I spoil them as you can see. They talk when they should listen.
(A/N: I live by that quote too, not just Eminem's. Sometimes when it comes to business or life, it's better to keep quiet than not let someone have time to talk.)
Corleone: But anyway... Signor Sollozzo, my No is final. I wish to congratulate you on your new business. I know you'll do very well, and good luck, especially since your interests don't conflict with mine. Thank you.
Once the meeting was over and we all shook hands with him, the Don had to see Santino.
Corleone: Santino. Come here.
When Santino went to his father, he said the best business advice I've ever heard.
Corleone: What's the matter with you? I think your brain is going soft from all that comedy you're playing with that young girl. Never tell anybody outside the Family what you're thinking again. Go on.
That's amazing. "Never let anyone know what you're thinking." That is smart and I'm definitely going to take it to heart.
Soon after, we were leaving the office as the Don was going to go across the street.
Corleone: Fredo, I'm gonna go buy some fruit. Tony, come with me.
Tony: Sure boss.
Fredo: Okay Pop.
As I went with the Don, I looked at some fruit, too. He was picking out some oranges from a crate as I looked at some apples that looked absolutely fresh. I was going to spend some of my hard earned money, but the Don stopped me with a smile.
Corleone: You want some too, don't you, Tony?
Tony: Yeah, but I want to spend some of my money.
Corleone: Don't. Whatever you get is on me.
Tony: Godfather, you shouldn't.
Corleone: I know, but I want to. You stopped Santino from continuing his little, uh, tangent. I want you to remember something son, it wasn't your place to do it, but you saved our business. I should be repaying you. Tell me what fruit you like and I'll get it.
Tony: Godfather, I don't know what to say.
Corleone: You don't have to. Just tell me what fruit.
Tony: Just a couple apples. I'll pick out which ones look-
I then saw two guys in trench coats and I saw them running up to us.
I was trained by Clemenza to use a gun so in case someone tried to kill Don Corleone, I was gonna kill them first. Once they wielded their pistols, I dragged the Don down and started firing at them.
They were shot, until they started shooting at me! The Don kept his head down but before I could even think, I felt a huge pain in my right shoulder!
Tony: God! AAAAHHH!
Corleone: Tony!
Once the guys ran away, I was holding onto my shoulder in pain as blood started pouring out! It hurt so bad, almost as if my arm was getting amputated without any morphine!
Corleone: Fredo, call an ambulance, now!
Fredo: They're on their way!
I kept fighting back for consciousness but after a while I didn't because I blacked out.
