16. Rita Skeeter

Y/N's POV

After me and Harry's disagreement, I was avoiding him. Instead, I was formulating my plan to get a good reputation in school. My brother had managed to speak to Cedric, who was devastated that he didn't get the title of Triwizard Champion. Indeed the Hufflepuffs thought me and Harry stole that from Cedric but luckily, with a few conversations, they weren't as annoyed as before.

My parents had been informed that I was Hogwarts' Triwizard champion, their reaction was confusing, I thought that they were going to be annoyed thinking that I had somehow found a way to enter but they believed me when I said that I didn't enter. They didn't seem as concerned, maybe as Aurors they would be at school to monitor the whole tournament.

Today was like a press day, the weighing of the wands was today and so were the photographs and interviews. I was trying to figure out what kind of personality I was trying to go for as public opinion would matter in this tournament. This tournament was a big deal and I was desperate to prove Harry wrong.

Just before Potions, I was walking with Hermione when I saw Malfoy walk up to Harry with a badge that read 'POTTER STINKS'. I sighed thankfully, Issac must've persuaded the Slytherins not to come at me. Me and Hermione were trying to walk past Harry and Malfoy to avoid any confrontation but Malfoy saw me.

"Like the badges L/N?" Malfoy asked.

I smirked. "Quality Malfoy, we all know I would be the better champion. At least better than Potter over here."

Hermione looked at me in shock and Harry's face was filled with a mixture of sadness and anger. I ignored their looks though, I was on a mission to prove myself and nothing was getting in my way.

An almost triumphant smile reached Malfoy's face, if I wanted to have a good reputation I would have to at least be civil to Malfoy. "Yeah, I prefer L/N to Potter, at least he's a Pure-blood."

I smiled slightly to Malfoy before walking away, motioning for Hermione to follow me. She followed, but she was confused and bombarded me with questions as soon as Malfoy and Harry couldn't be seen anymore. I merely explained to her that it was all to prove myself, I don't think she expected me to take this whole thing so seriously and neither did I.

In Potions, I was sitting next to Hermione whilst making notes. Some time into the lesson, there was a feeble knock on the door.

It was Colin Creevey; he edged into the room, beaming at Harry, and walked up to Snape's desk at the front of the room.

"Yes?" said Snape curtly.

"Please, sir, I'm supposed to take Harry Potter and Y/N L/N upstairs." Snape stared down his hooked nose at Colin, whose smile faded from his eager face.

"They both have another hour of Potions to complete," said Snape coldly, "they will come upstairs when this class is finished."

Colin went pink.

"S-sir, Mr Bagman wants him," he said nervously, "all the champions have got to go, I think they want to take photographs..."

"Very well, very well," Snape snapped, "both of you, leave your things here, I want you back down here later to test your antidotes."

"Please, sir - he's got to take his things with him," squeaked Colin, "all the champions..."

"Very well!" said Snape. "Potter, L/N - take your bag and get out of my sight!"

I swung my bag over his shoulder, got up, and headed for the door. We walked in silence to where we were meant to go. I ignored the conversation between Colin and Harry and just proceeded to walk. When we had reached the right room, I knocked on the door.

I was in a fairly small classroom; most of the desks had been pushed away to the back of the room, leaving a large space in the middle; three of them, however, had been placed end-to-end in front of the blackboard and covered with a long length of velvet. Four chairs had been set behind the velvet-covered desks, and Ludo Bagman was sitting in one of them, talking to a witch I had never seen before, who was wearing magenta robes.

Viktor Krum was standing moodily in a corner as usual and not talking to anybody and Fleur was nearby, in a conversation with Madam Maxine.

Bagman suddenly spotted Harry and I, got up quickly, and bounded forward.

"Ah, here he is! Champion number three and four! In you come, Harry, in you come...nothing to worry about, it's just the wand weighing ceremony, the rest of the judges will be here in a moment-"

"Wand weighing?" Harry repeated nervously.

"We have to check that your wands are fully functional, no problems, you know, as they're your most important tools in the tasks ahead," said Bagman, "the expert's upstairs now with Dumbledore. And then there's going to be a little photoshoot. This is Rita Skeeter," he added, gesturing toward the witch in magenta robes, "she's doing a small piece on the tournament for the Daily Prophet."

"Maybe not that small, Ludo," said Rita Skeeter, her eyes on Harry.

I stood there, whilst Harry was getting all the attention and looked around again. Skeeter had just said she wanted to have a word with Harry first so I stood and decided to take my chances and have a conversation with the other two champions.

"You two alright?" I asked.

Krum let out a small grunt and Fleur nodded. This was going to be hard, I turned to Krum and decided to speak about Quidditch. "I saw you play seeker at the world cup."

Krum decided to speak, obviously, he liked talking about Quidditch. "Ve still lost"

I replied. "But you gave an excellent performance, I play seeker as well. Nowhere near as good as you though."

Krum smiled ever so slightly. "I vould like to see you play one day."

I nodded and smiled, I opened my mouth to say something but Harry had just emerged out the broom closet and Rita gestured for me to join her. I followed and sat down.

"Harry said something about you so I wanted to get your side of the story." Rita said sweetly before sitting down.

I nodded. "Bad things I presume."

"Not necessarily, I just wanted to get your take on being one of the youngest Triwizard champions ever. What made you want to enter?"

"I didn't enter purposefully, when my name was called out I initially thought that it was my older brother since he had entered. Once I found out it was me, I was confused at first but I know that things have a way of working themselves out and I want to prove that I'm just more than one of Harry Potter's best friends."

Rita Skeeter nodded, her quill was going crazy. "How would you define your friendship with Harry right now?"

"I think it's more of a rivalry right now," I said, "I want to prove myself because I think that I'm a better wizard than him."

She let out a gasp. "You think you're better than the Boy who Lived?"

I shrugged. "It could've been anyone who survived that curse, he just got lucky and was chosen. Doesn't make him better than any of us. I could beat him in a duel, easy."

We carried on talking before Skeeter brought up another topic. "You're a handsome looking boy, surely there are girls flocking you around Hogwarts. Any comment on your love life?"

I smirked. "Well, I do think I'm quite the charmer." I then laughed. "I'm just joking, I mean there's been this girl I've had my eye on for quite a while."

"Do tell." said Rita

"She's very beautiful and she's the smartest in our year but I don't know, maybe Potter will steal her from me." I added the last part as a joke but I think Rita took it seriously. Luckily before she could interrogate me anymore about Hermione, we were collected for the wand weighing and photos.

Ollivander weighed all our wands and made comments about each of them and once he was done, Rita got us in position for the photos.

The photographs took a long time. Madame Maxime cast everyone else into shadow wherever she stood, and the photographer couldn't stand far enough back to get her into the frame; eventually, she had to sit while everyone else stood around her. Karkaroff kept twirling his goatee around his finger to give it an extra curl; Krum, whom I would have thought would have been used to this sort of thing, skulked, half-hidden, at the back of the group. The photographer seemed keenest to get Fleur at the front, but Rita Skeeter kept hurrying forward and dragging Harry into greater prominence. Then she insisted on separate shots of all the champions. At last, we were free to go.
