Chapter 6

Dan didn't want to get out of bed the next day. He wanted to cry and bury his head into his soft pillow. "Dan, you need to get up." PJ mumbled, worry laced in his tone.

"I don't want to." Dan replied, tears in his eyes.

"Lessons start in ten minutes."

"I'm not going to my lessons."

"You have to."

"I don't want to."

"Dan-"

"Leave me alone.." Dan rolled over so he didn't have to face PJ anymore.

-

"I'm worried about him, Sir." PJ said, looking up at Mr Quinn with sad eyes. "He's so sad and he wouldn't get out of bed this morning."

"PJ, we know about what's been going on at home. We know he's still upset about his parents." Mr Quinn replied, sounding equally sad.

"Yeah but I don't think you understand how sad he is.. I'm scared."

"I know you're scared but he will be okay, PJ. He's stronger than you think."

-

"Will anime cheer you up?" Phil asked Dan who hadn't left his bed all day. He was trying to coax him into getting up or maybe even smiling. Despite not knowing him very much, Phil was absolutely devastated to see him so sad. When Dan didn't reply, Phil sighed. "Do you like Death Note?"

"No." Dan said in a harsh voice. Phil was surprised that he had spoken but he was also afraid that he sounded so angry. "I hate it. Leave me alone."

"Dan, I'm sorry. What have I done to make you angry?"

"You came in here. I want to be alone."

"Dan-"

"Get out."

"I was only trying to help." Phil sounded so sad but that didn't even phase Dan in the slightest.

"Well stop. You're making it worse."

"Oh, I'm sorry." Phil then solemnly walked out of the room, not wanting to make Dan any sadder.

Dan actually started to cry again as soon as Phil left.

PJ woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of someone's shrill scream. He jolted up and walked over to Dan's bed to see that he was the one screaming. He was shaking like crazy and tears were falling down his cheeks. Nightmare.

PJ shook Dan awake and he immediately started to sob into PJ's chest. "They're back." He wailed, his heart beating rapidly.

"What are, Dan?" PJ whispered in the softest voice possible.

"The nightmares."

"Does it help to write about them?" Dan stiffly nodded so PJ reached into Dan's bedside draw and pulled out his notebook.

"Thank you, PJ."

I had another nightmare. They're back.

I was trapped in a room of glass. I could see outside and the world was acting normally. People were talking and laughing together and there were cars driving down the streets. It was like I was just stuck outside, forced to watch everyone else be happy as I suffered. I hit my fists against the glass but no one noticed me.

The room was getting smaller. I couldn't tell if it was just an illusion or if it was actually getting smaller. Either way I was hyperventilating. There was a family of three, a young boy with brown hair like mine- it was me, just younger. My two parents were standing with me, holding my hand as they laughed.

"I love you, mummy!" Young Dan said and the voice echoed around the glass room, making my head throb.

"I love you too, Dan!" Mum responded with a smile.

"Hold our hands so we can cross the road. We don't want to lose you."

"I don't want to lose you either!" I was screaming at the top of my lungs but no one could hear me. I was sobbing and wailing, unable to watch the harrowing scene.

I then woke up.
