▪︎ Chapter Twenty-Three ▪︎
"Woah, Harper, right on the floor of the boy's locker room? Damn, your game's tight" said one of the boys, making my face go red from both anger and embarrassment as I scrambled to get off him, he on the other hand, wasn't so embarrassed. He laughed. He actually laughed!
As I tried to get up, my locket which had fallen out of my shirt, got stuck on his shirt. Oh, come on. I tried removing it but I wasn't patient enough, so I kept fumbling. The boys kept on passing snide remarks and I wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.
I was able to force it out but then it burst open, revealing a small chip, like an SD card. Huh? What was that and how did it get in there? Last I checked, the locket contained only a miniature picture of my family and I, so where did that come from? I decided to ask my mum about it when I got home because I had more pressing issues to deal with at the moment, like saving what was left of my dignity.
Pushing that thought aside, I picked it up and placed it back in the locket, standing up. Blake also stood up, he seemed to have noticed the bad mood I was in, because the smile on his face had vanished.
"It's not what it looks like guys" he replied, scratching the back of his neck, but they didn't take him seriously. I sent him a deadly glare and stormed out of the room, not forgetting to send those jerks theirs too.
When I got out, I opened his phone and deleted the video but had to wait for him to come out cause I left my backpack inside. He came out soon after but I was so pissed at that moment. At myself mostly, for taking the decision to enter into the locker room in the first place, at Blake for making me take that decision and at those boys for passing those comments.
"I'm so sorry Dani" he said, walking out, my backpack and his in hand "I was just messing with you but I didn't expect things to turn out that way"
I grabbed my bag from him and started to walk away with him in tow.
"Please listen to me, I'm sorry" he pleaded but I wasn't listening. I was busy thinking of how I'd probably never be able to live that down.
Just then, the bell for the next period went and I made my way to my next class, I had not even noticed when Blake stopped following me.

"Hey Clo" I greeted as I took a seat opposite Clover at our lunch table in the cafeteria. No answer. I looked at her to see she was deep in thought.
"Clover?" I called, snapping my fingers in front of her face.
"What? Yeah? Oh hi Dani" she responded, looking at me, a worried look on her face.
"What's going on?" I asked, eyeing her suspiciously.
"It's nothing" she said, plastering a fake smile on her face.
"You know I can see through that smile right?" I asked, with a raised eyebrow "Come on, tell me what's going on"
"Alright fine" she sighed "My mum has been feeling a bit down lately, so she decided to get a check up done. She called some minutes ago to tell me that she's at the hospital and I really can't help but worry about what could be the problem. She had a diabetes problem some years back and it was really bad but somehow, she pulled through. I'm really just hoping that it hasn't found it's way back into her life"
By the time she finished, tears were streaming down her cheeks and it made me sad to see her like that. I had never seen her sad, she was always this ball of sunshine whenever she was around me. I was really bad at consoling people, most of the time, I think I actually make it worse but I really didn't like seeing her this sad so I gave it my best shot. Hopefully we'd still be friends after this.
"Oh God Clover, I'm so sorry" I said, going over to hug her "Everything would be fine, I promise"
You promise? How would you know that? The tiny voice at the back of my head asked.
"I really hope so" she sniffed, pulling away from the hug "The last time that happened, I had to stay with my cousins for a while and I didn't like that at all"
"Surely, your cousins aren't that bad right?" I asked her, chuckling.
"Trust me, they are. My uncle is this rich business tycoon and his children never fail to rub it in my face with their Jimmy Choos and Ashton Martins" she explained, making me laugh.
"Is that the problem?" I asked, chuckling.
"Yes, they can be very intimidating sometimes" she said, pouting.
"Whatever, let's just hope it doesn't get to that" I said, going back to my seat.
"Yeah" she sniffed, wiping her tears "Oh I'm such a mess, I'm off the bathroom, give me two minutes"
"Yeah sure, take your time" I replied and with that she was gone.
Some minutes later, she was back. Well at least I thought she was until I looked up to see Blake.
"Leave me alone Blake" I said, rolling my eyes. I wasn't mad anymore but it didn't hurt to pretend.
"Come on Dani, you can't still be mad at me" he said, taking a seat opposite me.
"Says who?" I asked, looking up at him " I was mortified"
"But that wasn't entirely my fault" he defended, leaning forward on the table.
"Yeah, sure" I said, rolling my eyes again.
"You know I'm right" he replied "Anyways why are you here all alone? Where's Clover?"
"She quickly went to the bathroom" I replied and just then, she came back.
We had lunch together, well Clover and I did, Blake didn't eat. He probably already ate.
After lunch, we went our separate ways and once again, I was forced to learn stuff.
I walked into the physics lab for my last class of the day and went over to take a seat by the window. Just as I sat down, André came over.
"Hey André" I greeted him.
"Hi" he replied, taking the stool next to me.
"Uh, I have a lab partner, remember?" I asked him, pointing to where he was sitting.
"I know, but he's not coming today" he shrugged.
"How would you know that?" I asked.
"I heard him tell one of his friends during recess that he had to leave school and my partner is also not around so I thought we could be partners for today" he explained.
"Oh, okay then" I replied and was bringing out my earphones because my teacher hadn't arrived, when André spoke.
"Hey, Mason asked me to say hi" he started.
"Really?" I asked, looking at him. That boy was so cute. "Say hi to him for me too alright?"
"Yeah sure" he chuckled, his hands on the slab.
I was about to put in my earphones again, when he spoke up...again.
"The move has been really hard on him since he had to leave all his friends behind" he continued, making me drop my hands and look at him.
"Aw, the poor kid. Trust me, I know how that feels, I've also had to leave my friends behind" I said, looking out the window, about to delve into the details of my miserable life but stopped myself and turned back to look at him "Don't worry, he'll soon get over it"
"I hope so" he replied, looking at me.
"Aw, look at you, being a nice and caring big brother and all" I teased, nudging him lightly.
"Oh please, I'm always a nice big brother" he replied, chuckling "But enough about Mason and I, you said you also had to go through that"
"Yeah, well" I simply replied, hoping he wouldn't push further but luck wasn't really on my side.
"Well, what?" He asked.
"Well, I did and now I'm over it" I replied.
"Oh, that's nice" he said "What was the reason you guys moved here again?" He suddenly asked, catching me off guard. I couldn't remember exactly what I told him the other day and I didn't want to lie, so I panicked.
"Why we moved here?" I chuckled, nervously "Well, it definitely wasn't just for a change of scenery that's for sure" I replied slyly, while still trying to remember exactly what I told him.
"Yeah, you said something about a new uh.." he started, unknowingly helping me out. I instantly remembered what I said.
"Yeah, yeah, my mum got a new job here" I replied, nodding.
"Oh okay. Is your house close to school or.." he started again, cocking his head.
"Not exactly. Why? Want to pay me a visit?" I asked, wriggling my eyebrows, making him laugh.
"Before you answer that, I'll have you know that I am the worst host ever" I replied, smiling "And, I really can't have you over because I'm actually a refugee on the run from a mob"
Well of course, I said the last part in my head, didn't think I'd go around blabbing my secret, now did you?
"Come on, you can't be that bad" he chuckled "Besides, I was just asking. I don't actually want to come over, I mean, it's not like coming over to your house would be bad or anything, it's just like -"
"Relax, I get it" I said, giggling, putting him out of his misery.
"Oh good" he sighed, a small smile on his face.
After that, the teacher came in and we had the class.
My mum was waiting for me in the parking lot by the time I got out of school so I went home early.
