▪︎ Chapter Twenty-Six ▪︎
"Hey, what is this tattoo?" Blake suddenly asked, making me look up at him. He was looking at André who looked confused.
"What?" André asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
"That tattoo, what does it represent? I've seen it before" He asked, nodding at his wrists.
"Oh it's nothing, I'm just a fan of fangs" he replied, putting his other hand over the tattoo of a fang on his wrist "I'm wierd like that" he chuckled nervously when he noticed the wierd look he was getting from Blake.
"Stop it Blake, you're making him uncomfortable" I said when I noticed that his staring was making André a bit nervous.
"What? I'm just trying to figure out where I'd seen it" he replied, feigning innocence.
"Well stop it" I said, a faint smile on my face.
"Yes mom" he replied as he went back to his lunch.
An awkward moment of silence passed before André spoke up.
"So, about that game tomorrow" he started, launching us into a conversation about the big game, to which he wasn't coming due to reasons he didn't give. We also spoke about basketball in general and I found out that he was also a big fan of basketball.
Thomas didn't seem to like André very much, kept shooting him dirty looks while Blake kept staring at André's once again exposed wrist. I'm pretty sure he regret wearing a short sleeved shirt that day thanks to Blake, but still, he seemed to be enjoying his time with us.
We decided that it was best to leave school after we were done with lunch, so I texted my mum to know if she could come pick me up but unfortunately, she wasn't free at the moment.
"What are you gonna do now Dani?" Clover asked as we all stood in the parking lot. I felt so embarrassed. All of them had cars except for Clover who drove her mom's car sometimes but I still had to wait for my mom to come pick me up. Ugh!
"I don't know, I guess I could wait here until she arrives" I shrugged nonchalantly. I knew I couldn't do that as the school would be empty soon and I'd be the only one left, but I was too embarrassed to say more.
"You can't do that, the school would be empty soon and you'll be left alone" Blake said, reading my mind "Besides, we don't know when she'd arrive, so come on, I'll give you a ride. It's no big deal"
"Don't you have to practice for the big game tomorrow?" André asked Blake just as I was about to reply "Don't worry, I'll drop her off"
"You don't even know where she lives" Blake replied, looking at him.
"Yes but she could tell me" André said then looked at me "Right Dani?"
"Yeah, Dré's right Blake, I really don't want you to miss out on any opportunity to practice for the big game tomorrow" I responded "So you guys go ahead and I'll hitch a ride with him"
"Dré?" Blake asked, a confused look on his face "Why are you calling him that?"
"His name is such a mouthful" I groaned and then turned to look at André "You don't mind do you?"
"Nope, not at all" he replied, smiling "I actually like it"
"Great!" I replied and turned back to Blake "Now, how about you and Thomas get going?"
"But -" he started but I cut him off. By now, Clover and Thomas were in their own world, barely paying attention to the banter between the three of us.
"You don't want to disappoint me tomorrow, now do you?" I asked in a threatening tone, going closer to him. I doubt I looked a bit as scary as I intended to because I was the one who had to look up at his face. Ugh!
"Fine but text me as soon you get home alright?" He said, glaring not so subtly at Dré.
"Yeah sure" I replied as he pulled Thomas away from Clover and towards their cars.
"Bye guys, bye Clo" Thomas called as he went off with Blake.
"Bye Thomas" we both replied, waving.
"I'd get going now" Clover said, turning to me, a smile on her face.
"Yeah bye" I said, hugging her and she went off in the direction of her car.
"Shall we?" Dré asked, making me look at him.
"Yes, we shall" I said with the fakest british accent ever, making him chuckle.
He led me over to a black Lexus, unlocked it and we got in. I looked out the window to see Blake's car pass and I waved at him. He returned it with a bright smile and I felt my stomach knot at the small gesture, bringing heat to my cheeks.
"Ready to go?" Dré asked, making me turn to look at him. I nodded, putting my seat belt on and we left.
I gave him the directions when needed and by the time we got to the street before mine, I remembered something.
"Shoot!" I called out, eyes wide.
"What? What happened?" He asked, pulling over by the side of the road and looked at me.
"I just realized that I don't have my key with me" I informed him. I always took my key with me to school but I had somehow forgotten to do so that morning.
"That's tough, isn't there anyone at home?" He asked.
"No, my mum's still at work and my brother's nanny won't be back yet" I said. Tyler's school didn't close until later.
"Well, we could wait at the doorstep for them" he suggested.
"Now that would be wierd" I replied, giving him a look "There's this coffee shop some blocks away from here, I'd rather we wait there. It's very close by and I would see my mom's car pass by on her way home"
"Are you sure?" He hesitated. What was wrong with him?
"Yes please" I replied.
"Alright then" he said, restarting his car and then drove further. He stopped in front of a sign that said "Cassie's Breakfast", parked his car and then we went in.
The smell of freshly brewed coffee welcomed us and I decided to get myself a cup of coffee. We chose a table close to the window as per my request and when the waiter came around, I ordered myself a cup of coffee. He didn't though, said he wasn't a big fan.
We sat there in silence, me sipping on my coffee and him, well, just staring at me.
"So, how has Arlington been treating you?" I asked, in an attempt to break the silence. It was getting awkward.
"Well, it's been nice, the classes aren't so stressful but the students I've met haven't been very nice" he replied "You and Clover are two of the few nice people I've met"
"Really? What about the boys? They're nice" I said, sipping on my coffee.
"If you haven't noticed, Thomas doesn't seem to like me much and Blake kinda makes me uncomfortable"
"Sorry about him" I replied, giggling "He acts a bit childish sometimes"
"Maybe they're giving me a hard time because I'm new" he shrugged.
"What? No! Trust me, Blake and Thomas are nothing like that. Remember, I was also the new girl some weeks back and they didn't give me a hard time. They were probably just goofing around" I replied, defending them.
"I sure hope so" he said, his fingers drawing circles on the table.
"Yeah" I replied and we went back to the awkward silence.
"So, you and Blake huh?" André suddenly asked, a smirk on his face.
"What about me and Blake?" I replied and then proceeded to take a sip of my coffee.
"Aren't you guys dating?" He asked, making me choke on my coffee and go into a coughing fit. The waiter immediately rushed over with a bottle of water and he collected it.
"I'm so sorry, here, have some water" he said, handing me the bottle as I pat my chest. I took a big gulp from the bottle and after sometime, I was calm.
"Why would you even ask that?" I asked when I had completely recovered.
"I don't know, I just kinda got that vibe from you two" he said "So you're not dating?"
"No, we're not André" I stated, my eyebrows furrowed. That's ridiculous, why would he even think that?
"But you like him right?" He asked, seemingly enjoying himself.
"What? No I don't" I exclaimed, feeling flustered, mostly because I could feel the heat crawl up my neck. I had never been one to talk about feelings and all that mushy stuff, so this was a bit awkward for me.
"So he's the one that likes you then?" He continued, feigning confusion.
"No! I mean, I don't know. Just shut up Dré or so help me God I will drown you in the remains of my coffee" I replied, raising my cup to show that I wasn't bluffing.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry" he replied, chuckling "Just wanted to know"
"Well I hope you know now" I retorted, rolling my eyes.
"Yeah, sure" he replied, a smile still lingering on his features. I went back to drinking my coffee but my mind kept wandering back to the question he had asked.
I checked the clock on my phone to see that it was some minutes past three now, which means my mum would be leaving the office for my school soon. I then sent her a text, telling her to pick me up at the coffee shop instead and that it was a long story.
"Hey Dani" André called, making me look up.
"Yeah?" I answered.
"How about...we hang out tomorrow" He asked "Just the two of us".
