▪︎ Chapter Twenty-One ▪︎

"What took you so long?" Blake asked when I got back to the study and sat down.

"Your personal jerkface that's who" I replied "He came into the kitchen to grab a can of soda and he looked all dressed up"

"Oh, he's probably going over to a friend's" he shrugged.

"Over to a friend's in a blazer and shoes?" I asked, raising an eyebrow "I don't think so"

At that, Blake looked up at me, an unreadable expression on his face.

"Oh, uh, maybe he has some work to do" he said, scratching the bridge of his nose.

"Okay" I shrugged "Don't even care anyways"

"Sure you don't" he replied sarcastically, a smile on his face. "You're so nice, you care even about your 'enemies'"

"That's not true, now get back to work" I scolded, hoping he wouldn't notice the heat creeping up my neck.

"Yes ma'am" he replied and went back to what he was doing. We continued to work in silence until almost an hour later, he received a text.

"Uh, maybe we should stop for today" he said, his eyes fixed on his phone screen.

"Why? We've barely been at it for two hours, you're so lazy" I teased, shaking my head.

"Actually, for a project that isn't exactly due soon, we've gone pretty far, so let's call it a day" he said, packing up his stuff.

"Oh you're actually serious, what's up?" I asked, stopping what I was doing.

"Nothing, I'm just a bit tired" he replied, smiling but it was obvious he was nervous about something. I wanted to ask questions but I barely had any rights to, especially with the way I acted when he wanted to know about my secret. Maybe this was his secret.

"Oh, okay, you should get some rest" I replied instead, gathering my stuff and standing up.

"Yeah, sorry we had to end early today, we'll make up for any lost time next week" he said, walking me to the front door, his hands in his pocket "Maybe on Tuesday again?"

"I don't know what relationship you have with this Tuesday chick but I really like it" I joked, trying to make him relax. Lame, I know but he was so tense, I wondered what was going on with him. He laughed at that though, so mission accomplished.

When we got to the door, he hugged me - for the second time today, not that anyone's counting - and just as he opened the door, a badly beaten up Steve came tumbling in. He had a broken nose and his lips were bleeding. He was a mess and he could barely stand so he was resting on the wall.

"Oh my God, what happened?" I exclaimed, going over to him but he just looked up at me and turned to glare at Blake.

"I told you to get her out of the house" he gritted, obviously in so much pain. What? I turned to see a shocked Blake.

"She was just leaving and I told you to wait for my call" he explained.

"Yeah sure, I could definitely keep standing in this state" he replied, rolling his eyes as he bent over, his hands on his knees.

"Okay, I don't know what's happening here but I think we'd better get him to a hospital" I said.

"No" they chorused, making me stare at them.

"Okayy, if going to the hospital is such a bad idea, I'd get a first aid kit then" I said, trying to help him again, with Blake coming over as well but the jerk pushed our hands away and dragged himself over to the living room. I rolled my eyes and went to the kitchen to check for the first aid kit. I found one in one of the cupboards and went back to the living room to see him lying on the couch, trying not to fall unconscious. He was trying to talk to Blake about something but he was failing.

"Look, just get some sleep, when you wake up, you'd explain better" Blake said, cutting him off.

"Whatever" Steve replied, rolling his eyes. A jerk even in such a state, I thought as I went over to them.

"Where does it hurt?" I asked, kneeling next to the couch Steve was on.

"What do you think you're doing?" He asked, looking at me "I don't need you tending to my wounds, now leave me alone"

"Where does it hurt?" I repeated, ignoring him completely.

"Do you not understand what I just...owww" he started to say but yelled when I pressed on his torso, making Blake chuckle "What the fuck!"

"Yep, found it" I said as I started to raise his shirt up. I was on the Red Cross club back in middle school so I kinda knew what I was doing. I used to be so proud of it that I willingly wore my uniform every Wednesday which was club day. But now, I won't even be caught dead wearing that uniform.

"Hey stop -" he started to say but then he passed out. I guess I pressed too hard. Oops.

"Sure" I replied to his now mute figure. I rose the bottom of his shirt way up his stomach to see a large bruise forming on it "Oh my God, who could've done this?" I exclaimed.

"It's Steve, he probably just got into a fight with the wrong people" Blake replied, crouching beside me.

"Is that why you wanted to get rid of me?" I asked, remembering the conversation they had earlier.

"What? No, I didn't want to get rid of you" he defended.

"Oh really? I'm pretty sure that's what you were trying to do" I replied, applying ointment to a cotton swab.

"No it's not, it's just, Steve texted me that uh, he was in a bad state and didn't want anyone to see him like that" he replied.

"And by anyone, he meant me right?" I asked, dabbing on the wound.

"You know how big his ego is, that's probably why he didn't want you to see him hurt" he explained "Sorry about that"

"Alright, you're forgiven" I said, glancing at him. I wasn't really angry though. Steve was a jerkface.

I went on treating the wound as he watched in silence. Along the line, a lock of my hair fell onto my face, thereby causing a disturbance. My hands were occupied so I kept swinging my head backwards in an attempt to get it out of my face but to no avail.

Blake chuckled noticing my distress, but he helped me tuck the lock of hair behind my ear.

"Thanks" I said, flashing him a smile and then went back to what I was doing. It was a very large bruise, like as if he was hit multiple times, making the bruise spread. I really wonder what kind of shit he got himself into.

I felt Blake's eyes on me so I looked up to see he was staring at me, a faraway look in his eyes.

"What?" I chuckled nervously, snapping him out of his thoughts.

"It's nothing" he replied, his cheeks tinting a light shade of red as he quickly stood up "I'll go get some ice" and with that he was out of the room.

Was he blushing? I thought as a smile crept onto my face.

He came back some minutes later with a pack of ice, looking anywhere but me. I collected it from him and placed it on Steve's head. I wonder what was wrong with him.

He helped me raise Steve's body while I wrapped a bandage around his torso. I left his face alone, he could do that himself. What? I think I've done enough.

"You're such a softie" Blake said, catching my attention "You don't even like Steve" he practically just read my mind.

"True, but I'm doing this for the sake of humanity" I responded, standing up.

"Yeah right" he replied as I packed up the first aid kit and picked up my back pack.

"Shut up" I retorted as I made my way to the kitchen to return the first aid kit, Blake in tow "I'm off"

"Hold on, let me grab my keys" he said about to leave but I stopped him.

"No, you're not coming, who's going to watch Steve?" I asked.

"Steve might be hurt but he's not a child that needs watching" he countered.

"It doesn't matter Blake, goodnight" I said and walked out the door, ignoring his calls.

"This isn't safe Dani, don't be stubborn" he said, catching up to me on the driveway.

"I insist Blake" I replied, turning to face him.

"Alright then" he said, pulling out his phone. He started to tap on his phone screen and soon a call came in through mine. I checked and saw it was from him.

"Really?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Yes, now pick up and don't hang up until you get home" he said seriously.

"Fine mom" I replied, rolling my eyes. I then picked it up, even though I thought it was ridiculous.

"Bye Blake" I said into the phone and left.

He made sure I didn't hang up all the way back and we spoke about the most random of things, starting from things going on at school to why the sky was blue.

I was two blocks away from my house when I felt like I was being followed. I turned back to check and no one was there. I wasn't totally, completely scared though because I had a realistic looking toy gun in my bag and I was not afraid to use it.

That's right, Blake's gun from the other day had stayed in my bag and it would continue to cause there's no way I'm putting that in my room. If my mum ever found it, she would throw a fit even before she found out it was fake.

I speedwalked the rest of the way home and until I made Tyler speak to Blake over the phone to prove that I had gotten home, he didn't hang up.

I had changed into my pyjamas and was on my bed, scrolling through Instagram when a text from Blake, along with a video attachment came in.

Blaky: Goodnight 😈

I replied with a goodnight and went on to watch the video. As soon as I played the video, my mouth literally dropped to the bed. Oh my God. What the heck?!!
