▪︎ Chapter Twelve ▪︎

My fourth period passed by fast and soon I was sat at a table in the cafeteria, a tray of fries and ketchup in front of me and Clover blabbing away right next to me.

"Dani? Are you even listening to me?" She asked.

"No, Clo, I don't listen to friends who ditch me like you did" I replied. Petty? I know.

"Come on Dani, I didn't want to feel like a third wheel" she said.

"What 'wheel' do you think I felt like when Thomas came over, huh? And how dare you hide something as big as his British accent from me" I complained.

"What, I didn't think it mattered" she explained.

"Now that's just an excuse. Everybody knows that if a guy has a British accent, that detail matters!" I replied pointing at her.

"Okay, okay, I'm sorry. Forgive me?" She apologized.

"Pay for my lunch and I'll think about it" I replied, a sly smile on my face.

"Deal!" She said and continued with her lunch.

"So is he British?" I asked some seconds later.

"Nope, he lived in England since he was 3, but then he moved back to NY like a year ago, so I guess you can say he's a citizen now" she shrugged.

"Oh, okay" I replied and we proceeded to talk about random things.

Just when I thought the drama I'd had for that day was enough, Steve and two of his friends walked over to our table.

"Oh look, it's my brother's whore and her friendsie" he drawls in a menacing voice. Friendsie? Who even says that?

"What do you want Steve?" I asked bored.

"For you to never show your face at my house again, that's what" he replied.

"Then, you're in luck cause I'd be showing my face at your house next Tuesday" I informed him.

"Don't you dare come" he threatened.

"Why?" I asked pointedly "Is there anything you're hiding that my presence could threaten?"

At first he looked confused and then his eyes widened. "Damn that Blake" he muttered.

"See you next week!" I said, a smug smile on my face as he glared at me and stormed off.

"Whoa, he really must care about his secret so much, cause that actually shut him up and that's saying something because nobody shuts Steve up." Clover commented, an amused smile on her face.

"That serves him right. It's about time he's put in the naughty corner" I said, making her laugh.

Once again, the rest of the day went by fast and soon I was in my mom's car, but something wasn't right.

"Are you okay mom?" I asked, noticing she wasn't in a good mood.

"Yeah I'm fine, it's nothing honey" she replied, focusing on her driving. She didn't even ask how my day went now I was sure something was up.

"Mom, I know something is wrong. Tell me, what is it?" I asked, concerned now.

"Your dad called" she started and my heart dropped. This was really familiar. My dad called almost everytime but whenever his call put her in such a mood, I knew it won't be long before we had to leave again.

"They've found us haven't they?" I replied, my voice low.

"No, but your father said they're on the move so they probably have information or something" she replied "the split might delay them a little but they're not one to give up"

"Oh, okay" I replied and the rest of the ride home was quiet. She didn't even try to reassure me of anything but we both knew she was trying to reassure herself first.

I got home and went straight to my room. I had a lot of things going through my mind. I didn't want to move again, not when I was just settling in. The thought of it made me want to cry. I was a teenage girl with barely any social life because I had multiple profiles.

It was evening now and I was in the middle of wallowing in sadness when I received a text from Clover.

Clover: Hey Dani. Call me when you see this.

Typical Clover.

"Hey Dani" she said as soon as I picked the call.

"Hey, what's up?" I replied.

"I'm good" she replied "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. What is it?" I asked.

"Uh, you're obviously not fine. You don't sound like you at all. How about you rest and we'll talk about it tomorrow huh?" She replied.

"Honestly, I'm fine and there's nothing to talk - " I started to say.

"No, you're not! Bye!" She replied, cutting me off and hung up.

I was left staring at my phone as I was once again swallowed by my thoughts. I laid down on my bed and tried to distract myself but to no avail. The last thing I remember thinking of was a family sized pizza placed in the centre of my room, just for me, and then I was out like a bulb. Thinking of food solves everything.

Well temporarily, because the next day at school wasn't much better. I wasn't my usual self and I'm sure it was obvious because even Blake started to ask if i was fine. Clover kept ringing the 'Are you okay?' question in my ears and I kept replying the same way, 'Yes, Clo. I'm fine'.

All that made me want to cry even more because I had two very good friends that I didn't want to leave behind. Not now, not ever.

"Dani, tell me what's going on, would you?" Clover whined as we sat at a table in the cafeteria during recess "I'm your bestie"

"There's nothing to tell, Clover, I'm fine"

"You sure? Cause you've been spacing out a lot today" she replied.

"Yes, I'm positive, now what were you saying?" I replied, swiftly changing the topic.

"Oh that, can you help me with something? I really need your help" she started.

"Anything. What is it?" I asked, happy she was off my back now.

"We're going to a party!" She announced.

"Except that" I retreated.

"Come on Dani, you know how you're my bestest friend in the whole world?" She started and I knew I was surely going to regret it.

"Yeah?" I asked cautiously.

"So earlier today, Thomas invited me to a party he's throwing this evening and I agreed without thinking. Now I'm nervous Dani, I've never been to a party. My life had suddenly turned from the girl bullied by the populars to the girl less bullied by the populars but is now invited to a party by one of the hottest boys in school?" She rushed out.

"Woah, slow down, tiger" I said holding her shoulders "You already accepted so you can't cancel"

"Exactly!" She replied "besides, I don't want to cancel so that's why I've decided you should come with me. I'm sure Thomas wouldn't mind"

"Nope, no way, parties aren't my thing?" I refused, shaking my head vigorously.

"Please Dani, this is like a dream come true for me" she pleaded "I get to go to a party with Thomas Freeze! Please, please, pretty please...."

Argh!!! She won't stop.

"No, Clover I can't, I don't really like parties, Thomas asked you so you have to go, but I don't" I tried again.

"No, you also have to because I need you there" she countered "Pretty pleaseeee,  my whole life depends on this and besides, it may be good for you. You've been moody all morning, maybe you just need something to help you relax a bit. Dani -"

"Okay fine, fine, just....stop...talking" I groaned.

"Yay! Thank you! You're the best!" She exclaimed, throwing her arms around me.

"Yeah, I know, now stop squeezing me, I can't breathe" I replied.

"Oh yeah, sorry" she said releasing me and pushing her glasses up her nose.

Minus the fact that I really didn't like parties, I was happy for her, she was really excited about this, probably her first time. Back in Las Vegas, my friends and I went to quite a few parties but I ended up leaving early, cause I always hated how it reeked of alcohol and sweat.

She started to ramble about something again but I didn't pay attention, instead I was thinking of how fragile she was and how much of a beating, I'd dispense on Freeze if it turned out he was only messing with her emotions. He was so going to get it from me.

The bell rang some minutes later and we left the cafeteria. We went to our lockers and went to our next class together. Lucky for me, the class didn't drag on and we were out as soon as the bell went.

After my last class for the day, I made my way to my locker to drop my books. I was in the middle of doing just that when Blake appeared in front of me.

"Hey, Robinson" he greeted, a smirk on his face. He had one hand in his pocket and the other secured his backpack on one shoulder.

"Harper" I acknowledged, mirroring his smirk.

"It's nice to see you're smiling again" he gestured at my face "I really thought something was wrong"

"I told you I was fine" I replied, rolling my eyes "just a little mood swing"

"Oh, it's that time of the month?" He asked shamelessly.

"What? No!" I replied, flustered as I felt my face turn red. I probably looked funny cause he started laughing.

"Shut up" I said as I slammed the door of my locker and started to walk away from that embarrassing situation. How could he even ask me that? Ugh!

"Come on Dani, it's not something to be ash-" he started, falling into step with me.

"Just shut up, Blake!" I groaned, trying to walk faster but it was no use, he caught up as soon as I passed him. Ugh, freaking long legs.

"Who would've thought something so little could make you nervous" he continued, still laughing. I wished I could punch him in the face but I couldn't even face him. Pathetic!

I walked right out the front doors and lucky for me, my mom had already come. I quickly went over to her car but not before glaring all so deadly at Blake one last time. But that only seemed to amuse him even more. Jerk.
