▪︎ Chapter Three ▪︎
I walked into my fourth period class with Clover, Maths. One of my favourite subjects. As soon as we got in, the once noisy class became quiet and all eyes were on us, I could feel it without even looking at them. I'm guessing the tale of the 'loser' who told Cynthia to shut it this morning had already spread like wildfire. Not caring, I walked straight to an empty chair by the window.
"Everyone is staring, Dani" Clover whispered, stating the obvious as she took the seat in front of me.
"I know" I shrugged "They'd stop sooner or later"
And they did stop staring seconds later like I said. The teacher seemed to be running late because we were thirty minutes into his period and he hadn't arrived. I plugged in my earphones and began to play Imagine Dragons at an earbleeding volume, but that's how I loved my music, earbleeding. I was well into my music when I felt a tap on my shoulder, making me look up.
"Oh shit" I muttered as I quickly tucked my earphone away because apparently, the teacher had arrived. I checked my watch to see it was already 45 minutes to the end of the class. I looked to my right to see the boy from yesterday morning, the one on the stairs.
"Oh hi, you're the guy from yesterday morning right?" I asked. He nodded.
"Thanks again" I said.
"No problem....again" he said, facing the front of the class and I chuckled lightly.
The teacher taught on sets and its properties and it was one long class. The boy seated to my right - I don't know his name yet but I spotted a little 'H' on the front of his notebook, so I've decided to call him that until I found out his name. Anyways, H was quiet throughout class, I mean seeing as the teacher arrived late, most people were barely paying attention as they chatted away. He probably doesn't talk much.
The recess bell finally rang and trust me, it was right on time. We were just about to venture into Venn Diagrams and I've heard that it's one nasty topic. I intended to ask H for his name at the end of the class but I forgot and when I remembered, he'd already left. I'd just ask Clover during lunch.
I didn't bring a lunch pack today, so Clover and I made our way over to the lunch line, bought our lunch and went over to the same table we sat at yesterday. It was empty and that was good because it was a nice spot and you could practically scan the whole café from there.
"Hey Clover, there was this guy that sat to my right during Maths, do you know him?" I asked some minutes into our lunch.
"Oh yeah, Blake Harper" she replied.
"Harper?" I asked "Is he related to Steve?"
"Yeah, rumour has it that they are, though they hardly speak to each other in school" she replied "He's a Harper child even though he doesn't act like one and trust me, being a Harper child is one big deal. His parents were one of those major shareholders I told you about earlier"
"Were?" I asked noticing her use of the past tense.
"Yeah, they died in a car crash some years back" she replied sympathetically "His family is still held in high esteem at our school though"
"Oh" was all I managed to say. And I thought I had been through shit. Even though I hated my dad at the moment, I couldn't imagine life without my parents.
"I'm guessing that's why he doesn't act like a 'Harper child' like you say"
"Probably, before his parents died, he wasn't much of an extrovert but at least he had lots of friends" she explained "now, he just walks around alone."
"That's tough" I replied.
"So does he have as much admirers as Steve?" I asked trying to lighten the atmosphere
"Yeah, but I think Steve's fan base is way bigger" she said "The girls at our school seem to be more interested in the thick headed jerk for some reason. He's crushed the heart of so many girls but I bet you, they'd go out with him over and over again"
"Why?" I asked, making a face "From what I saw yesterday, he's not even all that"
"Trust me, you could look like a potato but still get treated like a freaking Kardashian. As long as you're loaded."
"Just wow" I replied, laughing a little at her potato reference. We proceeded to talk about random stuff. We were racking ourselves up as we talked about some memes we recently saw when suddenly there was a loud bang on our table. The aggresive motion made my food spill on my shirt, leaving behind a large oil patch on front.
"Hey! What gives?!" I looked up to see the blonde bimbo from before, Cynthia and Stacy but this time, Steve and Peter were with them.
"Oops, did he soil your shirt?" Cynthia feigned surprise and laughed nasally "Do see it as a favour honey, I mean that shirt is so last century"
"You sick little - " I started but was rudely interrupted by Steve.
"Now, now, let's not get into a fight" he said taking a seat "You're new here, so you obviously don't know who she is or who we are, so I'd do the intro. We're the people you don't want to mess with. It's nice to meet your acquaintance."
"I don't give a rat's ass about who -"
"You should, because next time, we won't be so nice as to pardon you again" he cut me off rudely....again.
"I don't need your 'pardon'" I spat.
"You're welcome" he said with a fake smile. By now I was infuriated. So help me God, I would've hurt someone today, badly, but the soil on one of my favourite shirts was a more pressing issue. So instead I rolled my eyes and walked past them, out of the cafeteria and straight to the toilet.
I really hoped I could get the stain out. I was looking down at my shirt, my mind reeling with ways to get the stain out before recess was over, when I bumped into someone.
"Oh, I'm so sorry" I said immediately looking up to see Blake.
"It's fine" he replied.
"What happened?" He asked pointing at the stain on my shirt.
"Oh, some jerk name Steve spilled my food all over my shirt" I started to rant "And news flash, he didn't even apologise, instead, he said he 'pardoned' me for calling out that blondie when she bullied my friend. I mean who needs his 'pardon', he could shove it up his -"
I suddenly stopped, realising that I was talking to his brother!! Oh shit, how could I forget that. He's probably angry right now or maybe he thinks I'm talking of another Steve. I sure hope it's the latter. He doesn't look angry though so I think I'm safe.
"Um.... I didn't really mean he could shove....you know" I started to say but stopped when I noticed his amused expression and then he chuckled "You're not mad?"
"What for?" he shrugged "Steve's a douche bag"
"Good" I sighed smiling "cause I totally meant what I said"
"Yeah, a lot of people don't like him and also, a lot of people do like him" he chuckled.
"I'm definitely on the side of the former" I said "Well, I better start cleaning this up before it becomes tough to get out"
"Yeah, you should" he replied
"See you around" I said as I started to walk to the restroom.
"Yeah" I heard his faint reply.
I got to work on trying to remove the stain with water, but it wasn't coming off as expected and there wasn't any bottle of soap in sight. I went to bring out my phone to text Clover but I realized I left it at the lunch table. Ugh! I decided to wait a little, hoping Clover would come looking for me.
I stared at myself in the mirror. I looked like a freaking Kardashian. Note the sarcasm. My hair was up in a messy and sloppy bun and my previously sky blue t-shirt now had an oil patch the size of America on front.
I turned to the door as it opened, to see Clover come in with our bags.
"Clover, you're an angel!" I said immediately going to collect my bag "I hoped you'd come"
"Yeah, I know. I'm here now, so what's taking so long?" She asked a slight smile on her face.
"There's no soap around and water isn't having much of an effect on the oil patch" I complained.
"Oh that's true, the janitor always forgets to refill the soap in this toilet" she said, making me groan "Hold on, let me see if there's some in the janitor's closet."
"Okay thanks" I replied. She left and came back some minutes later, a bottle of soap in hand. She helped me get most of the stain out until it was barely visible. I'd have to move around with that for the rest of the day. We waited a little longer for it to dry, but had to leave when the bell rang.
"Thanks again, Clo" I said.
"For the umpteenth time Dani, you're welcome" she said rolling her eyes.
We went to our lockers, got our books out and headed for our next class. Well actually I headed for my next class. Clover had a free period so she went to the library instead.
