▪︎ Chapter One ▪︎

I stared annoyed and sullen at my 5th school in two years. I was pissed, pissed at my dad for getting involved with the mafia some years back. He was a journalist and yes, I know his job is to sniff out juicy news and stuff like that, but anyone should know better than to mess with the mafia, he's the reason I haven't had a permanent name and home for two years.

My name is Reina Fox, I think, I'm not even sure anymore because lately, I've been Summer Stone, Jane Hopper, Susan Phillips and now Daniella Robinson. Apparently, he got a hold of a drive containing important information, which if leaked, could be the end for them. Somehow, they found out he had it and now, they're hot on our tails.

We've had to move from one place to another three times, but when they caught up to us each time, my dad decided to split us up. He moved to an entirely different state from my mom, my younger brother, Tyler and I. This might push them off track a little in their mission to find us.

Now, here we are in New York while my dad was in Florida. He was also keeping tabs on the mafia group and hopefully, if they don't find us, this will be our last move and we can finally settle down. That seemed impossible but a girl could dream.

I hated the sudden changing of schools because I wasn't very good at making friends but Tyler on the other hand didn't seem to mind. He was only six so it was probably easy for him. Lucky for me, I was smart, so it didn't really affect my studies.

"Come on honey" my mom said noticing my sullen look "You know this is for our own good and don't worry, I have a good feeling we won't be found here"

"Yeah, you said that the last time too but here we are, in a different state and in yet another new school" I said, rolling my eyes.

"I know, I know, sorry about that" she replied sighing.

"It's okay, it's not your fault" I said.

"It isn't your dad's fault too you know" she replied, knowing what I was thinking.

"Yeah, whatever. Bye mom" I replied getting out of the car.

"Bye Dani, have a great first day" she replied calling me by my new fake name. I wonder if she also hates having to change her name.

"I'll try" I replied shutting the door and I watched her back out of the parking lot, not before sending me a million air kisses. Oh, I love my mom.

I turned to face the school's glass doors. Heaving a sigh, I walked up to it and pushed it in. There were not many people in the hallway, I guess I was a bit early. I started to search for the admin office but the school was so big, I think I got lost.

I was walking down some stairs when my two left feet hit each other and I started to fall, flailing my hands, already thinking of how death felt because unfortunately for me, there was no one in sight.

Suddenly, someone caught me, thereby interrupting my thought of the afterlife. Thank God, an angel. I really wasn’t ready to die yet. I mean, as embarrassing as it is, I haven’t had my first kiss.

“Um, are you okay?” the person said, steadying me on my feet.

“Yeah, yes, thank you” I replied turning around to see a boy “thanks”

“No problem, just be a bit careful” he said as he started to leave.

“Um, sorry,” I interrupted and he turned to face me “I’m actually new here and I was searching for the admin office.”

“Oh” he replied, a light smile on his lips. I’m guessing I was far away from the admin office then.

“Could you show me please?” I asked.

“Alright, follow me” he said continuing up the stairs, back to where I had come from.

I followed him, dragging behind his tall figure, all the way back to a door I had passed several minutes ago. Who would’ve thought the door of the admin office wouldn’t have a tag on front.

“Here” he said and started to leave again.

“Thanks” I called after him and he nodded, not looking back.

I knocked on the door and after a ‘come in’, I walked in to meet a woman in her mid-thirties.

“Hi, I’m Daniella Robinson. I’m here to collect my….” I started.

“Oh sure honey, have a seat” she interrupted. She probably didn’t like talkatives. Noted. She handed me my class schedule and a list of the other extra curricular activities I had to choose from. She gave me a circular brooch that had the school logo on it and that was it. I thanked her and left the office not before complimenting her hair to which she smiled widely.

I thought to put my brooch on but I didn't recall any of the few people I had seen wearing it, not even that boy from earlier so instead I put it in my backpack. Wearing it would only scream NEW GIRL COMING THROUGH and I wanted to blend in as much as possible.

I walked to my locker to put some books in and relieve my backpack of the weight. By now, the hallway was filling up with people, so I guess it would soon be time for my first period.....Chemistry. Yay! Not! I hated Chemistry and Biology  and a lot of other subjects except AP Physics and Maths. I was really good at them while I just tried for the others.

The door of the locker right next to mine slammed shut, snapping me out of my thoughts and I turned to see a girl staring at me through thin rimmed glasses. She continued to stare until I began to feel uncomfortable.

"Um..hi?" I said with a nervous smile.

"Hi" she replied waving with a lot more enthusiasm than needed "I'm Clover Greene and I haven't seen you around before now, so you must be new"

"Yeah, I'm Daniella....Daniella Robinson" I replied.

"Oh, nice name Daniella"

"Thanks" I said and resumed the  off-loading of my backpack.

"Have you been taken on a tour of the school yet?" She asked.

"No, not really. Was I supposed to?" I asked.

"Yeah, but not to worry. Lucky for you, I'm very familiar with this school" she said "I've been here since third grade"

"Oh, that's nice"

"I'd take you on one, if you don't mind" she offered.

"Sure, that would be great, thanks" I replied recalling my adventure earlier this morning.

"Okay, what do you have first period?" She asked as I closed my locker.

"Chemistry" I said looking at my schedule again.

"Great, me too!" she exclaimed "Come one, we'll go on that tour after Chemistry, there's a free period"

I looked down at my schedule and truly, there was a free period. I followed her to our Chemisty class and she talked a lot on the way there, shifting her tiny glasses up her nose every few minutes. I'm guessing she does that when she's excited. What? I'm an observant person. I don't talk much at first because I'd rather observe but once I'm done, you'd want to seal my mouth with a duct tape.

I noticed she was a bit hesitant to enter but after mustering some courage, she pushed open the door and walked in. The class was noisy as a regular teenage class should be. There were some teenagers huddled in groups, some had their head on their desks, probably sleeping, some scribbled on their desks and just one had his head facing the ceiling, earphones plugged in and eyes closed.

Clover and I walked straight to the back of the class and took two empty seats by the wall. I got out my books and put them on the table. I was a little bit of a neat freak, I loved my things to be arranged and if my pen was missing its cover, I couldn't use it. I looked to Clover to see she had slid down her chair so far, she was almost under the table. It was funny.

"Are you okay?" I asked, a smile tugging at my lips.

"Sure, I'm fine" she replied nervously. Why was she suddenly nervous? She wasn't like that with me. Just then, the teacher walked in and the people in groups dispersed. Everyone stopped what they were doing and even Clover sat up. I'm guessing the teacher's quite strict.

"Good morning class" the blonde man in his late thirties greeted "Today, we'll be learning about bonding in molecules"

He continued to talk about Chemistry stuff but stopped abruptly when he noticed me.

"Young lady" he said from the front of the class "You must be new"

I nodded.

"How come I wasn't informed?" he muttered to himself "Anyways, do you mind a quick introduction?"

Honestly, I mind. A lot. I didn't like talking in front of strangers neither did I like being the centre of attention but the tone he used made it clear that even though that was a question, he wasn't asking. So I stood up.

"Hi, I'm Daniella Robinson" I said  looking straight at the teacher, fully aware of the 34 heads that had all turned to look at me, including Clover's.

"Alright, welcome to Arlington High" the teacher said to me. I nodded and took my seat. The rest of the class dragged on after that and as soon as the teacher stepped out, Clover turned to me.

"Ready for your tour?" She asked seeming more excited than me.

"Yeah, just give me a sec" I said as I put all my stuff back in my bag and we left the class.
