▪︎ Chapter Five ▪︎

I sat down immediately, my face a deep shade of red and just then, Blake looked up at me. He smiled briefly and continued to focus on the ball, making the shade on my face get deeper. He sure had a pretty smile.

The match ended a draw and everyone was taking it lightly except Steve, of course, who was scowling so much. He walked up to Blake, poked him in the chest and whispered something to him. What was his problem?

Blake went over to his bag, took heavy gulps from his water bottle and proceeded to jog up the stairs to me.

"Hey, this isn't exactly an ideal place to read you know" Blake said as he sat beside me, an amused smile on his face.

"Yeah I know, but it was either the library or here and I wanted to study and not sleep" I replied and he chuckled "Never mind me, I didn't know you were on the basketball team"

"Well, I am" he replied.

"I won't ask if you're any good because I can see that you are" I replied "You're so good, you should be captain instead of jerkface". He laughed.

"Nah, I don't want such a responsibility" he shrugged "I've got so much on my plate as it is"

"Really? Like what?" I asked cocking an eyebrow.

"It's nothing" he replied waving me off.

"Modest much" I said rolling my eyes "Oh and what's with your brother? He's such a sore loser"

"Oh, he'll get over it" he said "and he's not my brother, he's my cousin"

"Oh. I'm sorry, my friend said you guys were related so I just assumed he was your brother"

"It's okay" he shrugged.

"Well that explains the vast difference in attitudes" I said rolling my eyes "he's such a jerk and you, you're anything but that. It's hard to believe you have the same blood running through you"

"Well...he's not that bad, he can be nice when he wants to be and you're giving me too much credit" he replied.

"You're being modest, again. Don't worry, you can gloat, I won't judge you" I said, making us both laugh.

"We should get going" he said, taking a look at his wrist watch. Some fancy leather I tell you. "This period is almost over and I have Mr. Donovan next period. Trust me, you do not want to be late to his class"

"Well, I have Mr. I-don't-know-who next but I'm sure he won't appreciate late coming either" I replied picking up my bag as he chuckled.

We stood up and he lead the way down the bleachers. The gym had emptied out now and we were one of the few people left.

"Of course, Blake's friends with the new girl" Steve said as we reached the door to the gym. He was standing just outside, talking to some friends and for some reason, he thought it necessary to acknowledge our appearance. "You're such a magnet for losers"

"Shut up Steve" Blake replied as we walked away. Serves him right.

Blake, being the gentleman he was, walked with me to my locker after which he said goodbye and left. Clover, who arrived just as he was leaving started to smile widely at me.

"What?" I asked confused.

"You guys make such a cute couple" she said squealing.

"Shut up Clo" I said, getting my books out of my locker.

"Awwwn, you look so cute when you blush" she teased again. I wasn't even blushing!

"Shut. Up." I repeated "Oh that reminds me, I saw Thomas Freeze earlier at the gym". And that, ladies and gentlemen, was all it took to turn the tables in my favour. Clover was in denial and she knew it!

The next day was Saturday and I couldn't wait for classes to be over. Saturdays were my best. I got to wake up at anytime I wanted and my mum doesn't go to the office, so we could have a little family time, you know, catch up on each other's new lives.

My prayers were answered as the last bell for the day rang and I ran out the school doors. I literally ran out the doors and lucky for me, my mom had arrived. I got into the car and texted Clover to tell her I had left school.

"Hi mom" I greeted her, placing a kiss on her cheek.

"Hi honey, how was school today?" she asked.

"Same old, same old" I replied as I spotted Blake come out of the school doors and he walked over to a sleek, black Mercedes on the other side of the parking lot. Whoa, there really are benefits of being a 'Harper Child'. Now I'm no car doctor, but I think that's the latest Mercedes Benz.

"Who's that?" my mum asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.

"What? Who?" I asked confused.

"The boy you were just staring at" she replied.

"Oh that's Blake, he's a..... well, I won't say friend but he's more than an acquaintance so.....semi-friend?" I explained making my mum laugh as she pulled out of the parking lot.

"Alright, I'm happy to know you're making friends or in this case, semi-friends" she replied making us both laugh.

"I have one friend though, her name's Clover" I said and went on to tell her about how I met Clover, Blake and even Steve and Cynthia. It really was a chatty ride home.

I groaned as I felt something or rather a little person climb onto me.

"Morning Dani, wake uppp" Tyler said as he tried to drag the duvet off of me "It's noon already"

"So what? Let me sleep some more Ty" I grumbled as I pushed him off gently.

"Wake up or I'll eat your share of mom's pancakes" he threatened. At the sound of that, I woke up. He may only be six, but he sure knew how to get me out of bed. The thought of missing my mom's award winning pancakes was horrifying.

My mom rarely cooked 'cause she was always tired after work but when she did, she went all out.

"Okay, okay, I'm up Tyler" I said sitting up "Now, excuse me while I freshen up"

"Alright" he said as he scurried out.

Sighing, I got up and walked over to my bathroom. I was so tempted to get back in bed but the perfect dream I was having was ruined and there was the breakfast thing.

I washed up and changed out of my PJs into a yellow tank top and short shorts. I skipped down the stairs to the kitchen and found my mum sitting by the kitchen island, a cup of coffee in hand.

"Good morning" I greeted as I went over to place a kiss on her cheek.

"Good morning honey, how was your night?" She asked.

"It was great, but it was cut short by Tyler" I grumbled as I sat on the stool next to her.

"Daniella, it's past noon now" she pointed out.

"And so what, mom? It's a Saturday" I whined "I was dreaming of Ryan Reynolds mom, freaking dead pool"

She chuckled, probably wondering who this Ryan Reynolds I spoke of was. Tsk, old people.

"Anyways, there's your lunch" she said pointing over to a tray covered with a napkin. I got down from the stool, walked over to the tray and opened it. There in the middle of the tray sat a delicious looking meal of pancakes, drowning in syrup, cinnamon and sausages.

"Oh la la. You're the best mum!" I said making her laugh at my excitement as I went back to the kitchen island, the tray in my hands. I helped myself to a glass of orange juice and dug in - breakfast wasn't really complete without orange juice now was it?

Twenty minutes later, I was done and was on the couch watching a spongebob marathon because Tyler refused to hand over the remote control and my phone was boring. At least it wasn't Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, now that was the worst.

I didn't have any assignments to do so when I was bored watching spongebob, I went up to my room to read a book. I had a little shelve of books right next to my closet, filled with my favourite books, so I chose one of them. I chose 'Percy Jackson: The Lightening Thief'. This was the third time I was reading it but it seemed to get more interesting everytime I re-read it.

I was halfway through Chapter 4 when my phone chimed. I looked at it to see I had a text from Clover.

'Call me when you see this' it said, so I called her.

"What's up, Clo?" I said as she picked the call.

"I'm boreeeed" she screeched through the phone making me remove my phone from my ear for a few seconds before putting it back.

"What the fuck Clo, why did you scream like that?" I asked "Do you want to burst my eardrums?"

"Sorry, I was just trying to get the intensity across to you" she apologized.

"You succeeded alright" I  replied, my hand on my ear.

"Yeah, so can I come over?" She asked.

"You wanna come over here?" I repeated "what makes you think here's any more interesting?"

"Trust me, right now, anywhere is better than here. My mum is out and I'm home alone" she replied.

"How about I come over?" I asked, not knowing how my mum would feel about an unexpected visitor.

"No, I wanna come over" she whined.

"Alright, alright, let me ask my mum" I replied.

"Okay, I'll be waiting" she replied as I cut the line.
