▪︎ Chapter Eight ▪︎
The next day after school, my mum had come to pick me up. As soon as we got home, I went up to my room and changed into something more casual, didn't want to be looking all dressed up just for a group study.
I went back to the living room to see my mum having a sandwich as she put her suit jacket back on, which she had removed when we got home.
"Daniella, I have to go back to the office now, some important work just came up. Marie took Tyler to the park so they should be back soon" she said as soon as she noticed me.
"Oh, when will you be back?" I asked
"I don't know hon, that depends. If I'm not back by 10pm, you guys just head to bed, don't wait up" she said.
"Alright, um, I'll be going over to a friend's place today" I informed her.
"Whose? Clover's?" She asked
"No, Blake" I replied.
"Oh, so our semi-friend has moved up the ladder to being friends huh?" She teased.
"It's just group study mum" I said rolling my eyes "besides, we're a group of three"
"Sure" she replied sarcastically and then added "just to be clear, I don't believe it's 'just group study' like you say, I'm being sarcastic"
"Yes, mum, I think I understand how sarcasm works" I said laughing "anyways, he lives over at that estate just down the road"
"Greenfield?" She asked and I nodded "So our semi-friend turned friend's parents are quite rich then"
"Bye mom, you're going to be late" I said getting tired of her teasing. She can get a little too carried away sometimes.
"Alright, alright" she said laughing, seemingly satisfied with the teasing "Come on, let me drop you off"
"No thanks, I'm supposed to be there by 5 and it's only just 3:45" I said looking at the clock above the television. "You can go, I'll walk"
"Alright then, be careful and be back by 10" she said grabbing her keys as she stuffed the remainder of her sandwich into her mouth.
"I'll probably be back before then" I shrugged.
"Okay, bye honey" she said opening the door.
"Bye mom" I replied sinking into the couch. Great. Now I was home alone. I hated being home alone. I grabbed a granola bar from the refrigerator and started to watch a movie showing on Mnet. It was about a girl named Nancy. She could see and commune with the dead.
40 minutes of horror later, the door opened and in burst Tyler.
"I'm home" he screamed as he entered.
"Hey Ty, how was the park?" I called making him notice me from behind the couch.
"Dani!" He exclaimed coming over to climb on the couch, or rather on me.
"Hey big guy, you seem happy" I said ruffling his hair.
"Yeah, at the park, I met two of my friends, Samuel and Samantha. They're twins and we played a lot and Samuel also brought his G.I Joe, same as mine and - " he was rambling.
"Okay, okay, I get it, you had a nice time" I replied laughing and getting off the couch. It was a little after 4, so I had to get going. "Good evening Marie"
"Evening dear, how are you?" She replied entering the kitchen, probably to start on dinner.
"Fine, thank you. I'm heading out now. I presume Mom already told you I was going over to a friend's house?"
"Yes dear" she replied.
"Okay then" I ran up the stairs, put on my sneakers, picked up my backpack, which I already set up earlier. I had some notes and a geography textbook in there. I brushed my hair which was going in every direction, thanks to me sliding down the couch during that horror movie.
"Bye Ty" I waved at Tyler as I made my way to the door.
"Where are you going?" He asked peeling his eyes off the yellow sponge on the TV and turning to face me.
"I have to meet up with some friends to study. I'll be back soon alright?"
"Okay bye" he said waving his tiny hands at me and turning back to the TV.
I stepped out into the chilly air and started my walk to Greenfield estate. I brought out my phone and looked at the address Blake sent me again. I had never been in that estate before and this address wasn't exactly explanatory so I decided to call Blake once I got there so he'd give me clearer directions or something. I'd rather not get lost in a secluded estate with houses bigger than the mall, besides, right now, my mind was everywhere thanks to scary Nancy.
I got to the entrance to the estate, a huge black gate, some minutes later and I met a middle aged man in a uniform.
"Hi, I'm here to see someone" I said.
"Evening ma'am. Do you mind calling them up?" He replied.
"Okay" I said and I rang Blake up. Fancy people with their fancy rules. His phone rang twice with no answer. I looked at the time on my phone and it was already 4:50pm.
"What happened?" He asked.
"There was no answer" I replied, dialing his number again.
"Now, who are you gonna call?" He asked.
"Ghostbusters!" Is the reply that was right at the tip of my tongue but thankfully, Blake picked up before I could embarrass myself.
"Daniella?" his deep voice came through the phone.
"Hi Blake, uh I just arrived at your gate" I informed him.
"Alright hold on, let me call the security" he said and hung up.
Some minutes later, his call came in to the security house and after a few exchange of words, the security opened the gate for me. Way to make me feel like an outcast, greenfield. I thanked him and walked in.
Blake's call came in again and I picked it.
"You in?" He asked.
"Yeah" I replied.
"Sorry about that" he apologized.
"It's okay. Hey Blake, the address was not very clear to me because I've never been here before, so please give me directions?"
"Oh, I didn't know that. Hold on, I'll come get you"
"No, no, the directions would be just fine" I refused.
"Okay, if you say so. Uh, do you see a cream house with a brown roof to your left?" He asked.
"Do you mean the golden palace just inside the gate?" I asked as I stared at a huge mansion just to my left.
"Yeah, it's probably that" he replied laughing "Alright, walk down three more 'palaces' and take a turn to the right. The house is just down that road."
"Okay, I'm on my way" I said as I began to walk down. I got to the turning, looked down the road and there he was standing in front of yet another palace but this one was white and also had a white roof, like the White House or something. I then walked straight to him.
"Thanks" I said on getting there, "sorry I'm late"
"It's fine, come on" he said as he started to walk down the pavement.
"Wait, this isn't your house?" I asked confused.
"No, this is my house?" He said pointing to the house right next to the white one. I looked to the other one and my eyes almost popped out of their sockets. Figuratively, of course.
"Woah" I muttered unconsciously, as I followed him to the gate.
"What?" he chuckled.
"You know how I said the other house was a palace?" I asked.
"Yeah?"
"Now this, this is the size of a small kingdom" I said and he laughed.
"You tend to use the hyperbole a lot, Dani" he replied.
"No, I'm serious. I mean next to this, my house is like a hut, a cubicle" I said.
"I'm pretty sure I'd rather live in yours than in here. It's a bit empty and can be a bit too quiet sometimes." He shrugged.
"Says the one who lives in the small kingdom" I said, rolling my eyes. The driveway was filled with cars and I spotted his Mercedes, his Porsche and a few other unfamiliar cars.
He chuckled again as we reached the front door.
He opened the front door for me and I walked in.
"Thanks" I said, a smile dancing on my face. He nodded and led me into the hallway. I couldn't help but look around, my neck almost snapped.
The inside of the house was white and had paintings lining the walls of the hallway leading to the living room. It was beautiful.
We walked into the living room and surprise, surprise, there, on the massive couch sat Stacy.
