I sat by the over-sized windows of the cafeteria, watching as tiny specks of snow drizzled from the clouded sky.
No one at Celvire could let go of the fact that Wren's locker was still smeared in neon green spray paint. And no one could get over the messy letters written over it. Myself included.
Apparently the janitor had been working all night to erase the graffiti, but after realizing that the paint wouldn't come off period, had simply stuck a rectangular piece of flimsy brown cardboard over top of it with duct-tape. Even so, that didn't stop the buzz around the school.
Despite the longing of seeing Wren again in good health, a small part of me couldn't help but hope that she wouldn't show up...not yet at least.
"Heyyy Vince."
My head shot to the side, snapping me out of my daze.
Jason sat by my side, a cheerful grin spread wide across his lips.
No one has ever voluntarily chosen to sit beside me other than Wren, so this was another first.
Instinctively my eyes darted around me. Not a single person paid us any attention, which ultimately, was a good thing.
"Jason...," I said cautiously in greeting. He causally slid his lunch tray on to the surface of the table, swinging his long legs over the bench in the process. "You're joining me for lunch...?"
Nonchalantly, he began eating away at the food topping the paper plate sitting over his lunch tray, scooping spoonfuls of stir-fried rice into his mouth. But, not before tying his blonde dreadlocks back into a stubby ponytail with a jet black hair-tie.
"Usually I would be sitting with Georgia but she's still pissed from yesterday."
I could sense a hint of glumness in his voice, to which he quickly covered up with a hollow laugh.
I flicked my gaze over to my fingers, which were resting awkwardly in a half-folded position over the lunch table.
"I'm going to assume she's waiting for an apology of some sort."
"You betcha."
Gradually, his motions seemed to grow more aggressive as he went from casually eating lunch to full-on demolishing it. The corners of his lips tugged into a passive-aggressive smile as he suddenly slumped forwards, the grip on his plastic spoon growing limp.
"Damn, that girl is killing me right now," he murmured under his breath, letting his spoon fall from his grip all together. It landed against the plastic lunch tray with a slight bounce, emitting a light thunk. "You have no idea."
For a few moments, I stayed silent, unsure as to either leave him to his own thoughts or to make an attempt at comforting him and asking what the details of the problem were.
Finally after further thought, I surprisingly chose the latter.
"So," I said awkwardly, "Why don't you just talk to her, clear things up and that sort of thing...?"
My suggestion came out more as a question than a piece of advice really.
Slowly, Jason lifted his head, his dark brown eyes landing straight on to mine to engage into a nearly lethal stare.
"Dude, she's Georgia Romone. It ain't that easy."
He let out a long sigh, letting his shoulders rise and fall heavily.
"Is it that hard to 'un-friend' somebody?" I asked cautiously, quirking a brow.
Jason nearly mimicked my expression, raising an eyebrow as he shot me a look of disbelief.
"Bro, Romone has things on me and I have things on her. It's nearly impossible to break off a friendship that's lasted for this long."
I nodded my head, showcasing my understanding.
"Plus," he added, his voice coated with an underlying sense of melancholy, "she was always there through the thin, and I don't plan on repaying her by turning my back to her when she needs someone right now. She just needs some time to cool off...that's all."
Almost immediately the thought of Georgia's almost breakdown a couple days ago sprung into my mind as I replayed Jason's words from that day over and over again.
"If it weren't for me, the secrets between you and Wren would've been out by now."
Jason and Georgia knew something of Wren and it was still killing me knowing that I didn't know a thing.
But before I could ask anything about it, Jason quickly gobbled up the remainder of his lunch, leaving without a word.
