Chapter 20
My heart stopped as I walked into the Defense against the dark arts classroom. There was a tall wardrobe in the middle shaking violently. Lupin had us stand around it when we walked into his classroom.
"Intriguing, yes? Would anyone like to venture a guess as to what's inside?" Lupin asked calmly.
"That's a Boggart, that is." Seamus said making me shake.
I hated boggarts, mostly because they always scared me half to death. The thought of them being able to turn into the one thing we fear most, frightened me, because I don't know what I'm actually scared of.
I've never known, I mean I'm scared of a lot of things, but I don't know what my greatest fear is.
"Very good, Mr. Finnigan. Can anyone tell us what a Boggart looks like?
"No one knows." Hermione said from beside Ron.
"When'd she get here?" Ron asked in shock.
"Boggarts are shape-shifters. They take the shape of whatever a particular person fears most. That's what makes it so-"
"Terrifying, yes. Luckily, a very simple charm exists to repel a Boggart. Let's practice it now, shall we? Without wands, please... Riddikulus!"
"It's this class that's ridiculous." Draco mumbled from behind me.
I sent him a look and he held up his good hand. I turned back to Lupin and listened to him talk.
"Good. So much for the easy part. You see, the incantation alone is not enough. What really finishes a Boggart off is... laughter. You need to force it to assume a shape you find truly amusing. Neville, come up here, will you?"
Neville froze up and I gently pushed him forward. He shot me a look and I let out a groan. I followed behind him and stood a few steps back.
"What would you say is the thing that frightens you most?" Remus asked as Neville stared at the wardrobe.
Neville mumbled something and I rolled my eyes.
"Didn't catch that, Neville, sorry."
"Professor Snape." Neville whispered making everyone laugh.
I turned around and shot them a look, making them all shut up. I looked back at Neville who silently thanked me.
"Hmmm... yes. Neville, I believe you live with your grandmother?"
"Yes, but I don't want the Boggart to turn into her either." Neville said making me laugh a little.
"It won't. But I want you to picture her clothes, only her clothes, very clearly in your mind. Can you do that?"
Lupin opened the wardrobe and I watched as the boggart came out in the shape of Snape.
"Think, Neville. Think!" Remus said sternly.
"R-r-riddikulus!" Neville yelled.
In a flash Snape appeared wearing women clothing, which made us all laugh. I walked up to Neville and patted his back.
"You did great." I said cheerfully.
"Thanks." Neville mumbled as he smiled at me.
Lupin dropped the needle on a record player and music started to play.
"Ron! Forward!" He ordered pointing to Ron.
Ron stepped up and almost instantly Snape turned into a spider.
"Riddikulus!" Ron yelled.
Instantly the spider grew roller blades and fell to the ground. I let out a laugh and smiled as it continued. It soon landed on me and I took a step forward. But when it changed I instantly froze up. Lupin turned around and froze as well.
In front of me clear as day was my mother. She tilted her head and started to walk up to me. I raised my wand up and felt it start to shake. But before I could do the spell someone pulled me back and it changed into something else, or more less someone. It turned to Lucius Malfoy.
"Riddikulus!" Draco called, changing Malfoy's cloths into women's.
Draco pulled me to the back of the class and kept an arm around me. Harry soon went up and Lupin jumped in front of him. I couldn't see what happened, because I was staring at the ground.
When class was finished Draco led me to our dormitory. I instantly curled up on the couch and brought my legs to my chest.
"Want to talk about it?" He asked sitting beside me.
"I'm not scared of her... I'm scared of failing her. I'm scared that maybe if I wasn't born... she wouldn't be in a mental hospital." I said through tears.
"That's stupid, your mother would probably be dead without you. There is no way she would have let her brother and sister in law go if you weren't around. Your mother loved you so much that she left them to die just so that you could live. So if you weren't around, she'd be dead." He said staring down at me.
"I thought she was. Gran told me she was alive until last year." I explained.
"I'm sorry, must have been hard."
"It was, to make matters worse... Professor Snape is my father." I said with a groan.
