Chapter 16

Eileen placed a hand on my back as we walked into St. Mungo's. My heart was racing and I could hardly breath. She was alive this whole time and I had never known it.

Moony- no Remus had always told me she had died. That the night James and Lily Potter, my uncle and aunt, had perished, my mother died with them. But that wasn't the case. No she was alive and I hadn't been there for her.

I could only imagine the pain and suffering she must have went thru. I had left her to stay here alone, cooped up and probably going insane.

"Cassandra Potter." Eileen said after the nurse asked for a patient name.

"Ah, it's been awhile since Mrs Potter had visitors. Relationship?" The nurse asked softly.

"This is her daughter, Ebony." Eileen explained a small smile on her face.

"Ebony? Oh your mother will be trilled. Your name is actually the only one she says." The nurse said sending me a smile.

She led us to an, almost, empty room. It had a bed and one single desk, with a chair. Inside the room there was a woman inside, who was sitting on the bed staring out the window. She was slim and looked so pale. Her brown hair was extremely long and looked like it hadn't been brushed in months.

"She won't let us touch her, you see. She screams and has a fit. We have to sedate her to cut her hair. It's about that time again, I'm afraid." The nurse explained while I walked into the room.

I saw pictures on the desk and picked one up.

"Is this... me?"

"Your father drops them off. Sweet man, only one who has visited her in years. He comes almost everyday on her birthday and yours, brings her pictures of you and talks to her."

A single tear fell down my face, but I quickly whipped it away.

"I'll give you all some privacy." She said with a small smile.

The nurse quickly left the room, leaving the door cracked. I turned to look at my mother and finally got a good look at her.

She had bright brown eyes, that looked almost empty as she stared out the window. She was wearing a white gown and had a ring on her finger, which looked to have been there for years.

"Mum.... I don't know if you can hear me... but it's me. It's Ebony." I said as I walked towards her.

She stayed silent and I pulled the chair up to the side of her bed.

"You have no idea how happy I am to see you. I thought you were dead. I'm a second year at Hogwarts, I have a bunch of friends. My two best friends are Fred and George Weasley, you'd love them Mum. They are pranksters, dream of opening up their own joke shop." I said as tears streamed down my face.

I whipped my eyes and let out a small laugh.

"I live with the Weasley's now. Uncle... Remus, he left. Haven't seen him since last year let alone wrote to him. But that's okay, I'm happy. I met my grandmother, Eileen. She's dad's Mum, haven't met dad yet but... I can dream... I miss you Mum and... I really need you, I really just want to be home with you." I said as I stared at her.

Nothing, no reaction or movement. I stood up and whipped my eyes. I turned to leave but was stopped.

"I... killed them." She whispered making me turn around.

"What?"

"I killed... them."

"She's talking about your aunt and uncle. Your father said she was there that night outside the house holding onto you. The whole time she kept saying she killed them." Eileen said sadly.

"No, Mum you didn't kill them. That was you know who. He killed them, he took them from Harry."

"Harry...." She whispered as her eyes went wide.

"Harry is alive, just like I am mum. We go to school together. He's my best friend. I've been told he looks just like his mum and dad. I'll have to bring him to visit you someday." I said as I gently moved my hand to hers.

When she didn't move or react I gently touched her hand. I half expected her to freak out, but it felt like she had relaxed. I felt her hand turn and she gently squeezed my finger. I smiled softly and squeezed her hand back.

When we left I felt exhausted. I hadn't really got a chance to rest since I arrived, having instantly went to the hospital with Eileen.

"That's the first time she has let anyone touch her, including your father." Eileen said softly.

"Do you... do you think she will get better?" I asked sadly.

"We can only hope." She said rubbing my back.

Eileen's house was small and cozy. It was full of books and ingredients.

"Wow this is amazing." I whispered as I looked around.

"Yes, I moved here nearly five years ago. After my husband passed away, dreadful man. I'm glad you don't know him." She said softly.

"You didn't like him?"

"I loved him, but after we got married he changed into a horrible person. And it only got worse when we had Severus."

"Severus?" I asked making her freeze up.

"Pretend I didn't say that name." She said as she quickly fixed a blanket on her couch.

I walked up to her and she let out a groan and closed her eyes, so that she wouldn't have to look at me.

"Gran.... Is that his name? Severus?"

She let out a sigh and looked at a picture flipped down. She walked up to it and picked it back up, staring at it.

"Yes, that is your father's name. And if you are as smart as I know you are, I believe you can piece together the pieces." She said sadly.

"Severus.... Severus Snape... is... is professor Snape my father?" I asked in shock.
