6. Moonlight lake

I knocked on the wooden door of the familiar wooden house. The flowers that were being watered by Granny Nan were in full bloom, giving the front of the house a rainbow of colors with the many flowers that were planted. The smell of nectar and pine mixed well giving the feeling of being at home. 'I wonder where she got the seeds to plant these flowers' I thought to myself as I had walked up the small stone walkway to the front of the house.

"Granny Nan!?" I slightly yelled out. Attempting to get her attention if she was somewhere else.

"Coming! Coming!" I heard from the other side of the doorway and soon the sound of the bolt unlocking sounded out. The door creaked open and the usual smile and greying blonde hair appeared, wearing the same white dress-like gown, white pearls, and red jacket. "Well look who decided to come for a visit?" She asked rhetorically then opened the door wider and held her arms out for a hug. I instantly wrapped my arms around her frail body into a tight hug.

BANG!

The sound of a door shutting loudly caught my attention as I jerked in surprise and turned my attention towards the inside of Granny Nan's house. Her living room only had a couple of wooden chairs, a metal furnace, wooden walls, and the carpeted floor. "What was that?" I mumbled in slight confusion. Granny Nan pulled back and turned to where I was looking. She stared for a couple of seconds before chuckling lightly.

"Probably just a tree or something. They tend to drop branches as if they were flies." She chuckled again. I stared at her weirdly before staring back at the backdoor. 'I could have sworn that it came from inside the house though.' I thought in confusion. A slap to my back brought me back from my trance making me turn back to the older woman. "Let's not think about that, how about you show me what you've brought today." She smiled kindly and I nodded, my smile returning.

"Okay."

~Time Skip~

It was currently nearing nighttime as I was helping Granny Nan with the dishes, the bright sun was currently receding through the trees and down the horizon, the birds that were chirping wildly earlier had died down to chirp only every other minute or two, the dishes clanking lightly against each other as I sat the still wet dishes onto a drying rack for them to dry.

"You know what we should do?" Granny Nan suddenly said, breaking the clam silence between the two of us. I glanced up to her as she finished the last dish and started drying her hands on a nearby towel.

"What?" I asked curiously. We had only hung around the house watering her flowers, playing board games, and talking about the village all day, so this caught my interest.

"There is this nearby lake that I found when I first came up here, it is the most beautiful lake in the entire forest, I like to call it 'Moonlight Lake'." She said starting her way towards the front door, pulling her red jacket from the rack. I followed her closely like a lost puppy, curiosity peaked as I grabbed my own red hood. "Let's go visit it, shall we?" She said opening the door and exiting to the cool evening air.

The wind was blowing gently making my hood and hair flutter slightly before calming down once more. The smell of pine and nectar was intoxicating. Looking over the treetops I could see the village I call home was lit up with lanterns and bustling with people who were probably just enjoying the nice evening. The usual forest that surrounded us wasn't as loud as the village below, but was bustling with it's own life as the daytime animals were retiring for the night, nocturnal animals were taking their place. Owls, raccoons, and opossums were coming out, making the forest rustle with life. The cicadas and crickets chirped to each other, giving the forest a tune to follow.

Granny Nan started walking down the steps of the porch, I stumbled to catch up slightly, as we walked passed her rainbow of flowers that were closing up for the night. I stared as we walked by the array of flowers and before I knew it we were in the depths of the forest already, the crunching of twigs and stray leaves filled up the silence that the cicadas and crickets couldn't fill.

Every so often rustling in the bushes were heard and the feeling of being watched returned, as it always did whenever I walked to and from Granny Nan's. Although I don't think she noticed it herself as she started to hum a mindless tune, her body swaying with the tune, it was calming, almost making the night seem like a normal walk in the park, even with the rustling. I followed after Granny Nan for what felt like a couple of hours, but it was most likely less than that, the calmness of our walk was pure bliss and soon we entered a clearing where the trees parted lightly until it created a large circle.

"We're here." Granny Nan said taking a side-step to allow me to get a better view and once I saw the lake my eyes sparkled. The trees parted enough that it created an almost perfect oval around the large lake that sat in the center, the lake itself was a clear as day, there were little to no waves in the lake making it perfectly reflect the moon and stars, even somehow giving the sky a light dusting of light blue making it seem as though it stole part of the sky itself.

"It's beautiful." I murmured lightly not taking my eyes off the stolen sky. Granny Nan chuckled lightly, but stayed silent. Probably to let me take the sight in, but it didn't last long.

"Come here for a second." She whispered into my ear before gently pulling me towards the water. I stumbled slightly, still staring at the water, before being able to follow. I watched as the shore came closer and closer until we were right on top of it. She stopped me and made me sit there.

I couldn't say anything, I couldn't take my eyes off the water, it was too beautiful. The mixture of sounds from the forest, the beautiful reflection of the water, it was as if I was apart of something from fiction. I kept staring at the reflection, my eyes wandering slightly, from counting the many stars, to watching the blue tint sway slightly from the waves, to the reflection of the boy with blond ears on the other side of the lake.

Wait...

I instantly looked up towards the other side of the lake, the dog-boy from before was sitting on the other side of the lake. The same ragged clothes from before were still on him, although a bit more beat up and dirty as there looked to be a couple of new square patches on his shirt, he was sitting cross-legged on the other side of the lake, staring at it as I had been doing until I spotted him.

"Granny-" I stopped short as I turned to find no one near me. I stood up instantly, confused as ever, 'She wouldn't just leave me alone, would she?' I thought to myself in confusion as I kept looking everywhere for the older woman. Even taking a couple of steps away from the shore to see if she was in the trees, but I couldn't spot here anywhere.

After rechecking for the 12th time I turned back towards to dog-boy, he wasn't staring at the lake anymore, he was staring at me, his blue eyes cutting through the dark night as the moons reflectioned light brightened the sharp orbs. I blinked in surprise as we stared at each other for what felt like an eternity.

Then out of nowhere...

he waved to me.
