14. Horcrux
Remus' POV
He woke up with her face just above his, her brown eyes staring at his and her bubblegum pink hair making his nose tickle.
"Remus! Remus!" she said slapping his cheek not so softly. Tonks seemed worried.
He opened his eyes widely and felt her breathing on his face. It was weird having her so close to him but somehow, and admitting that embarrassed him, he liked it. His green eyes still staring at her brown eyes, he couldn't move. He didn't know what to say.
"Trust me, this is not the weirdest way I've woken up." those were the first words that came out of his mouth, he wasn't thinking clearly.
A small smile flashed shyly her worried face. He smiled too but then remember: she was worried. There was nothing she could be worried but if she was hurt. The werewolf stood up pushing Tonks away. She was just sitting on the floor. He breathed fast and heavily, his heart beating so fast it could explode, as he searched for traces of blood.
"Wha-what was that?" she said even more nervous.
"Are you okay?!" he replied exalted.
"Yes, why wouldn't I be okay?" Tonks stood up slowly next to Remus.
"I-I don't know. I thought you were hurt"
"Why would I be hurt?" she said approaching more to Remus.
"I don't know... I thought...." his head still on the moment when he was just a few inches away from Tonks. "Just... forget about it."
"Okay..." she bit her lip. "Actually, I was going to tell you... that I know..."
"Know about what?"
"The lantern's an horcrux."
***
It took her a while to explain him everything. It was really weird, what she was saying but... it sounded so believable. How didn't he think of something like that before? Maybe because he didn't know much about that. Maybe because in those moments of his life he didn't think of that option. Maybe he was too distracted by being with her to think of other options more than what the books offered them...
They both apparated to Grimmauld Place. As soon as they reached the house Tonks ran towards the door. Sirius opened it from the inside after Tonks knocked.
"Heeeeey!" Sirius said smirking evilly. "How was the night?"
"There's no time for this." Tonks said coldly. "We need to get in the house."
"Are you okay? What's going on?"
"There really is no time for answers. Please, let us in. Now."
She said everything strongly and coldly, like if she was really sure of what she was doing.
Sirius finally gave up and let us. Tonks entered the house without looking back to see if Remus was still following her. But before the werewolf could enter the house, Sirius grabbed his arm.
"What's happening to her?" he asked apparently preoccupied. "She had never been this... hyper"
"I don't know," Remus answered firmly. "but I'll find out."
***
Sirius went upstairs to feed Buckbeak, Remus followed Tonks to the kitchen. She had left a trace of broken objects, he heard her tripping over everything.
"Close the door." what used to be Tonks' sweet voice, because now it was just serious and maybe even mad, said.
He closed the door behind him and turned around to find himself surrounded by a huge mess. In just a few seconds Tonks had managed to turn a nearly acceptable kitchen into a disorganized place to make potions.
"What are you doing?!" he shouted at her because the witch was running around the long table taking small bottles that contained weird stuff from the shelves and taking them to the table.
"Do you know what's an horcrux?" she said fast as she ran passed him to take a tiny blue bottle from a high place.
"Err... a part of somebody's body transformed into-"
"A part of somebody's soul that is saved in a thing or person or animal" she interrupted and ordered all the tiny bottles on the middle of the table. "and do you know how it's destroyed?"
"I'm not sure," he said looking at her mixing everything in the cauldron she had put on the old table. "I think by doing something to it-"
"By destroying it in a way it can no longer... Recover? Something like that!" she took her wand out of her boot and started stirring the potion with a wooden spoon.
"How do you know all that about horcruxes?" he inquired approaching to her.
"I-I don't know... I just suddenly knew it" she started to cast some strange spell on the potion, it turned yellow.
"Then how do you know you're right?"
For a second she stopped doing what she was doing and looked straight to him, straight to his eyes. Her eyes were brown as always but... Remus would swear he saw a flash of green in them.
"I just know I'm right," she said seriously. "Trust me."
Remus sighed, not taking his eyes from her. Bot only because he really liked when she stared at him but to make sure that flash of green he saw was real. He nodded. He wasn't sure if he was trusting her because he believed her or because her was scared that that new Tonks with flashing green and brown eyes would get angry or because he just loved her. But he thought that it was actually because he had no other idea of what the lantern could be.
After a while of more stirring, which Remus helped with, and more small bottles breaking Tonks was finally satisfied with her potion.
"You still haven't told me what's that for" he said glancing at the black substance inside the cauldron.
"It's the most powerful and dangerous potion of all time," she took a strange spoon and started filling to the top a bottle with it. "It needs precision and lot's of time."
"Then how did you do it so quickly?"
"Just a bunch of dark spells, nothing to worry about." Tonks didn't seem to worry about anything, she just continued doing what she was doing.
"Dark spells?! Since when you know about that?" Remus tried to make Tonks look at him. He put his hands on her shoulders preventing her from continuing filling the bottle.
"I never knew about them, Remus." she said calmly looking at him. For those few seconds they were staring at each other, just for those second, he didn't see green in her eyes. "But if they help me destroy the lantern... then I don't care."
Remus sighed.
"Okay."

The basement, a depressing place with only one source of light. A fluorescent green lantern. Tonks approached to it with the bottle in her hand. She looked at the lantern, thinking a few seconds pf what to do. Then she lifted the bottle to drop some of the potion on the lantern.
"Are you sure of what you're doing?"
"No." she answered as the black liquid fell slowly to the lantern.
Everything after that happened so fast that it felt like slow motion. As soon as the first drop fell on the lantern a grey smoke started coming out of it. Tonks took it, she held it for a few seconds and then threw it against the wall. The lantern hit the brick wall and crashed into millions of tiny pieces. None of the pieces was green, the lantern was completely destroyed.
Tonks stared at it with no expression on her face.
"It's done." she said not looking at him. "It's over. No more dreams, no more investigating, no more... seeing each other that often..."
Remus looked at her, she was right. All that time they had spent together, all that time they had fun seeing each other, all those days they saw each other out of the Order meetings and missions had only one purpose. And now they mission had been accomplished. Now there was no excuse for Remus to see Tonks without people discovering that he loved her. Now they would split and Remus would continue with his lonely life.
But he didn't want to. He couldn't go back to that life. There had to be something else, it couldn't be that easy to solve everything.
"Well..." Tonks turned to face Remus. "Remus..."
Tonks approached to him. They stared at each other for a few seconds, that for Remus were like a thousand years, saying nothing. That could have been the perfect moment to kiss her, to tell her everything. But he couldn't, he had to control his feelings... because of his little issue. But it was hard. His hand started moving up to Tonks' face when-
A fluorescent green flashed her eyes.
"Tonks, your eyes."
"What?" she said distracted.
"They turned green."
"Green? That's okay!" she replied calmly. "I'm a metamorphmagus, remember? Sometimes I can't control my powers."
"But it was the lantern's gree-"
"Remus, it's just a metamorphmagus thing" she said as she walked, still facing Remus, toward the stairs. "Nothing to worry about. See you in the next Order meeting!"
And she disappeared, leaving Remus alone.

Tonks' POV
That night I went to sleep feeling relieved. I was home in my own bedroom, laying on my own bed feeling like nothing bad could happen. I closed my eyes and thought about Remus, of how perfect he was. He was my next mission.
***
I found myself in a beautiful cabin. Yellow light entered the room by a window with a yellow curtain that had sunflowers printed on it. A small table with tea party supplies was in the middle of the room. I walked around the room, it was a kitchen. I knew that kitchen. It was from the time my father took my mother and I to his family's cabin. I was about seven.
I realized, and I was happy about it, that I was having one of those dreams that I could control.
I skipped around the table and left the room. The smell of wet grass filled my nose and lungs as I sat next to a tree.
Suddenly I heard a noise coming from behind a tree. I approached to it, I was really curious. A black shadow came from behind the tree, I saw her face.
"Missed me?" asked Walburga Black.
"No, actually I didn't miss you at all." I said hiding my fear as best as I could. "How is this-? I mean, how are you still-? I thought I had destroyed-"
"You thought that destroying the lantern you were killing me?" she answered laughing at me.
"Well... yea."
"You're just a dumb girl, that's why you thought that."
I frowned. Everything was really confusing. That voice inside my mind had-
"That voice inside you mind was me, I can hear your thoughts."
What?
"Remember that time... when you suddenly knew what was happening with the lantern... and you didn't even know where you got that idea." (Chapter 9)
"Yes..."
"Well that was me, telling you how the lantern worked."
"Then why didn't it work when you told me the lantern was an horcrux?"
"Oh! That time J was lying to you!" she said giggling.
"But if the first time you told me the truth... Why lying that time?"
"Because I wanted you to free me!"
What??
"Look, this is not a normal horcrux. This time there's a part of my mind and soul inside of it."
And what does that has to do with-?
"A part of my mind (and soul) was in that lantern and as you had more dreams and thoughts in that house I became more real and took over you."
Okay...
"But I couldn't completely exit the lantern so I needed you to destroy the lantern to free me, it was like a prison."
So...
"That's why I lied to you. I made you believe that when you destroyed the lantern you destroyed me... but... you set me free."
"Is that all?" I inquired. I wanted as much information as she was willing to give.
"Oh! And that time when your little werewolf heard your voice in the lantern was because a part of you was in it too."
"Why a part of me?"
"Because I chose you."
"Choose me? For what?"
"Look, I died long time ago. But I didn't want to so, before dying, I created this horcrux. The plan was to get into somebody's mind and live there until something happened to that person and I would take over her mind and control her body."
Did she just tell me her whole plan?
"So I chose you."
"Why me?"
"Because you were an innocent girl and you had special metamorphmagus powers and that could be useful when I took over you."
"So you're saying that..."
"I'm now living inside of your mind."
Wow.
"And I'll stay here until the very end." she finished happily.
"What did you mean by when something happens to you?"
"Like, for example, when you fell asleep. You are no longer conscious and I can control you."
"But you could get rid of me right now, kill me and take over me."
"I can't kill you, stupid girl"
Why?
"Because I'm living inside of you and... remember that dream where your little friend was burnt to death... and he actually got burnt in real life?" (Chapters 6 and 7)
"Yes..."
"If I hurt you here, in your dream, I may hurt your real body. And your body's what I need to take over. And I'm bot controlling a body without head." she finished with a laugh.
"And what if I kill you right now? Here."
"There are three reasons why you can't do that. First, you don't have any weapon right now."
I could suffocate you.
"Second, are you ready to kill somebody?"
You're not really here. I mean, you're already dead. This is just a part of you.
"And third because I control the dreams."
What?
"I'm inside your mind, I can hear your thoughts and I know what you are about to do. So I can wake you up before you kill me. That's why I'm not scared of telling you everything."
She winked.
Everything went black.
