Chapter 3

We'd been driving in silence for the last thirty minutes, nothing seemed to catch our eyes. The only thing I could hear was the honking horns, and Gene's faint breathing. It was only eight. I had no idea what we would be doing until the end of the night. "Back at the music store..." I started.

"What about it?"

"Did that mean something to you?"

"How so?"

"I mean... did you feel different? Like... good?"

"Yeah... I... I like the way your hands fit perfectly into mine..." His face was turning bright red as he struggled to figure out the right words.

"Why'd you pick Love's Joy? Does it have a special significance to you?"

"Not really... I just like that piece... did you like playing it with me?"

"I... I loved everything about it!" I sputtered out. I could feel the tension rising as he pulled into a parking lot.

"Well, I heard this place was supposed to be good." He changed the subject, climbing out of the car. I sighed and followed him. We walked into a pub. Ordering (food) and waters. Our waiter set us down at a table for two in the corner.

"I'm still starving," I groaned, taking a sip of water and leaning on my hand.

"Why's that?" He asked, leaning on his hand as well.

"I haven't eaten since... well two days ago, if you don't include two hours ago." I played with the straw in my cup, spinning it in circle while Gene started at me with wide eyes.

"Why didn't you eat anything!?" My eyes trailed from the cup to his surprised face.

"I was nervous. I have a system, I don't eat two days before I perform, just so I don't throw up on the stage, then I go and eat as much as I want." I shrugged.

"Well in that case we might as well get another plate." A smile came across his face and he ordered another plate of food. "Anyways, what's there to be nervous about? You're an amazing violinist. I'm sure even if you did mess up a few notes, no one would care."

"Thanks... do you think you'd like to accompany me in my next performance?"

"On the drums? That doesn't sound too classical." He joked.

"I meant on the piano. I know I have Davis to be my accompanist, but I want to try and shake things up a bit, if you don't mind?" He looked nervous.

"I-I don't know (Y/N)... I've never actually... performed." He adjusted his collar and took a drink of water.

"Please, Gene? You had several songs memorized! Including Love's Joy! If you can play a piece as complicated as Love's Joy then you must love playing! Gene, I'll do anything!"

"Will you go on another date with me?" My face flushed a crimson and looked down, nodding. "Then I'll try it. Did you have a piece in mind?"

"Love's Joy, It's so beautiful. I know how to play it on my violin and you know how to play it on the piano." I was going to add something like, and because I love you, but I held back from that.

"Alright. How about after dinner we head back to my apartment. I have a piano there we can practice and if we don't like it we can change it."

"Thank you!" I smiled, looking at him. I grabbed him by the shoulders and hugged him over the table.

The rest of dinner was quite awkward, not much chatter, but when we got back to the apartment complex I grabbed my violin, and shot up the stairs with Gene right behind me. Neither of us could wait to try this out. He unlocked his door and lead me into the messy living room. "The piano is in the extra room." He lead me into a room on the far right of the apartment and there it was, a grand piano, dust covered it along with a couple stacks of sheet music.

"When was the last time you played?" His eyes trailed to the window, frowning.

"When my parents were alive." A small gasp escaped my lips and I set my case down and slowly put my arms around him, he didn't seem too startled, but didn't hug back. I understood why, and it didn't bother me in the slightest.

"Can I ask you another question?"

"I guess," he mumbled. I looked at the floor, slightly embarrassed.

"There's two parts to the song Love's Joy, the other part is Love's Sorrow... today why did you pick Love's Joy?" I could hear his heartbeat quicken and he cleared his throat.

"Because my heart felt joyful for the first time in forever." Those few words made my heart flutter and he moved my arms. "Shall we begin then?"

"I-I... yes." I took my violin out and began tuning as Gene prepared his piano. Once we were ready he counted us down, and we began playing, it was quite easy, and I immediately tried to spice it up. I sped up the tune and drew out the notes more. Gene looked over at me confused and a grin sprawled across my face. "Keep up, Gene!"

He began to play faster as well and soon we were battling to see who could play faster, yet more beautiful, while staying on track. We came to the end of the song and I set down my violin, sweat dripped down the side of my face. Gene stood up and walked over to me and pressed me against the wall. "What is this supposed to mean?" I asked, finding it hard to breath.

"(Y/N), I don't know why I found it so hard earlier to say this to you..."

"Is that your way of saying you love me?" A smirk came across his face as he whipped the sweat off the side of his face. I whipped my own sweat, breathing heavily his warm breath hit my face in a beautiful, calming way.

"No, this is," he pressed his lips to mine, and placed his hands on either side of me, I found my fingers curled in his hair, already wanting more. We pulled away, panting once more. "Does that mean the second date is a definite?"

"For sure." I nodded and he kissed me again, his warm lips on mine, the salty sweat from both of us was pleasant. Most would be disgusted, but I loved every, minute of this.
