Author Note: The Girl Who Fell Out of the Ocean is a first draft and is still raw, I hope you enjoy.
Bluebell House- Present Day
Charlie awoke with a cloud surrounding him, he kept thinking about the cold he had felt the evening before and the face of the girl, the ghostly girl ran through his mind like a whisper on the wind.
He shook his head as if he was shaking her from his mind and in that moment when he was stood bleary-eyed at the foot of his bed he really did believe that he would never think of her again, that she was nothing more than his imagination.
May was pottering in the kitchen, they only had one more day at Bluebell house before May had to get back to the kids and they really had to make a decision on whether or not this was going to be their new home. She had already started packing her small suitcase in her typical May whirl wind fashion, throwing things in unfolded that had found their way all over the small cottage.
As Charlie walked from the bedroom to the kitchen a jacket was flying across the room and hit him in the face. She hadn't even noticed Charlie walk into the room, now headless just a body and a yellow jacket for a head. He peeled the jacket away, revealing his sister who had now finally seen him, she frowned at him like he was an untidy thing that needed to be organised as well.
"How are you feeling March, after yesterday?" Said May.
Charlie shrugged.
"It was nothing, just a blip," said Charlie, he raised his big brown eyes at May, he'd always been a terrible liar, when he lied his eyebrows seemed to wriggle across his forehead like to rogue caterpillars reminding May of when they were children. She always knew when he had a problem or secret just by the state of his eyebrows.
She let him lie to her, if they moved here they would a family again, minus February of course, but they would be a family. And families they look out for one another, if March and May and the kids lived in this little house and smashed their lives together once more she would look out for him, and find out what nonsense was going on in that curious mind of his. So, she let him lie and just hoped she could somehow convince him that he belonged with his family when his life seemed to be pulling him so hard and so fast back to Manchester, back to that girl, Lavinia.
"If you say it's a blip then it's a blip," May smiled.
"I was thinking," Said Charlie.
May sighed and looked at him, why did he always look so guilty these days? May wondered.
"Dangerous," May smirked.
"Funny, not. Look, I was thinking of heading home today, ya no, I should be getting back to work, I've seen the cottage and I've said I'll think about it, what more is there really for me to do here, and we were only going to stay one more day...," Said Charlie while looking at the floor.
May let out a large breath, she knew it was coming, what else was he really going to say? Ever since they had arrived he had wanted to leave of course he wanted to go.
"Okay," said May.
"Okay?" Said Charlie.
"Yes, March, okay, you're not a prisoner, you can leave,"
Charlie was a bit taken back by this he would normally expect a bit more of a fight from May .
"Let's just have a cup of tea in the garden and we can both get going, I've packed at least," May smiled and nodded to her open suitcase.
In their limited time at the cottage Charlie and May had only ventured into the front garden the access was easier and the back garden required a key to two scary looking wooden gates which May had only found this morning. Seeing as they had made the decision to leave Bluebell house May thought this would be the perfect time for her Charlie to take a look at the mystery garden which had alluded them for the past couple of days. And part of her was worried that she wouldn't be back to see the garden or the cottage again so she wanted to make the most of her final hours.
May busied herself with the heavy antique key and the stiff door while Charlie carried the tea cups one in each hand. The sun was burning brightly and despite his willingness to leave, he was looking forward to moment with the sun on his face and sitting quietly with his sister.
May opened the two wooden doors to the garden they had a stiffness to them which meant she had to push hard also weeds had grown slightly over the doors which broke away as she pushed through, Charlie followed her tea cups in hands.
"Oh my god," said May gazing at the garden.
The garden, if you could really call it that at all, was a space at the back of the house that had been filled with great yellow sunflowers. Every patch, every space, was covered with sunflowers they grew tall and wild and freely. The previous tenant had had quite the obsession with the flower, but how were May and Charlie to know that?
When Charlie saw the great space of flowers looking back at him, almost screaming for him to follow them, he wanted to shout back at the great yellow beasts follow you where? Follow what?
Charlie turned and left the garden, suddenly he wasn't so excited to sit in the sun.
Marxby Manor- September 1st 1918
After Papa's gathering a few of his friends stayed on at the manor, not many just a select few, it was Fay's 18th birthday on the 3rd and Papa's guests were staying on for the celebrations. This included the General and Thomas which pleased Fay immensely, although she thought she was hiding it ever so well, even from me.
After the gathering Niall's and my relationship took an even darker turn, the beatings got worse and I took them if only to keep him away from Violet. He spent most of his free time with Percy, they hid it from the family well but Percy made sure I saw them, that I knew what they were doing. She was that delusional that she thought I was spending my days lusting over the man who beat me in the twilight hours, no, I was doing everything in my power to get myself and Violet away from him.
But I knew I was going to need a backup plan, a safe guard, something in place, not if I didn't get out but if I couldn't. I had to think of Violet and that's why on the 1st of September 1918 after midnight I went to see Thomas Trevelyan, a seventeen-year-old boy who I hoped was in love with my little sister. He was my backup plan, my back up back up plan. The plan I would turn to if all else failed.
"Do you know who I am?" I said as soon as Thomas opened his bedroom door.
"Yes My Lady but you know you shouldn't be here, you ought to think of your reputation,"
I pushed the door and Thomas out of the way and sat on the stool next to Thomas' desk.
"Can I be frank with you Thomas?"
"I wish you would My Lady,"
Thomas was wearing red pin striped pyjamas, he didn't look any older than fifteen in this state of dress, it made what I was about to say to him all the harder I just had to keep reminding myself that he was seventeen.
"Do you love my sister?"
"Yes My Lady,"
I nodded.
"I think my husband is going to kill me, Thomas,"
Thomas' eyes shot opened widely and with interest.
"If this happens I am putting plans in place for my daughter. If I am murdered Fay is to take my daughter and run because she will not be safe, not from my husband and not from my father. I am telling you this because I believed you love Fay and want to marry her."
"I'm sure things aren't all that bad My Lady, I'm sure Lord Niall would never, would never...," Thomas trailed off.
I said nothing and just stared at Thomas.
"But yes you are right, I would marry Fay in a heartbeat,"
I nodded.
"So, if and I am sure that is a very big if, but if something happens to me would you take Fay and Violet and run?"
It was all metaphorical to Thomas of course, it was never going to happen, not really, but the idea of running away with Fay, the idea of it, it was all he had ever dreamed of, of being with her, really being with her. Without rules and convention and her father's plans for her standing in their way, chewed on the thought for a moment, let it sit on his tongue before speaking.
"My Lady, if any of what you're saying comes to pass and I doubt that it will, I will run with Fay and Violet," he stood very tall and looked into her deep brown eyes and said "I swear to you," he really meant it I knew that. It was all I wanted, a fail safe, a plan hanging in the air if something was to happen....
I stood from my stool and approached Thomas and dropped a bag in his lap, he gazed at me stunned.
"It contains, money, and fake I.D's for you and Fay also a fake marriage certificate, I'm sure you would marry in the end, but if it came down to it, you and Fay would need that especially if you were travelling with a young child, in the bottom of the bag is two wedding rings, that's the clinking you hear," I said.
Thomas didn't say anything he just nodded.
"I hope I don't need to say this Thomas but I'm going to say it all the same, you can not tell anyone about this conversation, no one but Fay can know,"
"Yes My Lady, of course, but may I just say that all seems very extreme, "
I made my way to the leave the room and turned to Thomas before leaving.
"Yes, it is all very extreme and as you can imagine I hope that none of what I am afraid of comes to pass but, I will not be taking any chance's not with my child's life," I said.
Thomas looked at me for a moment and for the first time I saw the kind, strong man he would become.
"You're not taking any chances with Fay's life either," said Thomas with a smile.
"Some things, Mr Trevelyan are worth fighting for,"
Thomas smiled at me as if he knew how special Fay and I were to each other, I opened the door about to walk through it when Thomas caught me "My Lady call me Tom, everyone calls me Tom,"
"The so shall I," I smiled.
That would be the first and last time that Tom and I would ever speak.
