The Yellow Car Part 14

Authors Note: This is the first draft and is raw at the moment - when I have completed all Parts I will start the editing process. (All critiques welcome)

"Will!" I cried

"What do you think you are doing?" I place both hands on his chest and push him away.

Will didn't have time to reply, not that he needed to, he gazed at me guiltily but it was all too much.

I dived off the boat, into the lake creating a small splash a long branch from the weeping willow smacked me in the face but I ignored it.

I swam back towards my siblings and Penny all the while I could feel William's eyes following me through the water. Oh God, stupid girl, I chastised myself as the cold water ran over my skin. I tried to mask what happened when I reached the others.

And I did, poorly but I masked it all the same with a smile and shrug.

"What? I just fancied a swim." I said ringing out my dress, my hair dripping.

As they all looked up at me.

"And Will?" Said Jimmy who sat on the bank with his book, Sarah was lying next to him and rolled over when she heard my voice.

"Didn't want to get wet," I said.

"Really?" Percy scoffed and raised her eyebrows she lay next to Sarah whose eyes were closed in the bright early afternoon sunshine.

"Yes, really!" I said although slightly too high pitched and slightly too sarcastic.

Will finally made his way back to the main part of the lake and for the first few minutes avoided looking at me at all. I was sat on the edge of the lake with my book of poetry and eventually Will came and sat next to me.

"Look, I'm sorry," he said.

"No, don't be," I said I couldn't help but fidget.

Will's eyes shot away from his hands and landed on my gaze.

"I don't want you to be sorry but I'm marrying Lord Nial I... made a commitment," I said.

"Well, I just hope he doesn't turn you sour because you are just the sweetest thing." Said Will who, as he spoke let his hand brush mine, I let him, and I couldn't help but like it, the feeling of his skin brushing my own.

"Hey Lav, do you want breakfast or you going to spend all day hauled up in your room?" Shouted Sam from the bottom of the stairs.

Sam's voice broke Lavinia's concentration she put down her pen quickly and folded her letter to Charlie into her back pocket.

"Alright I coming" she shouted back.

Lavinia flew down the stairs, the best thing or one of the best things about Sam and Andy being home was Sam's cooking. His speciality was breakfast. When she reached the kitchen Sam had, as she had expected got to work on pancakes she pulled up a chair and smiled at him.

"You have your uses," said Lavinia.

"So true" laughed Andy.

George and Anna had gone out leaving the triplets alone in the house, Andy was fussing because Sam had decimated Anna's beloved kitchen and while they were arguing over who was actually going to clean up the mess. Lavinia was deciding how she could escape the house without her brother and sister following.

"You made the mess you can bloody well clean it up," said Andy.

"Princess"

"Prat"

"Can you to shut up your doing my head in," said Lavinia rubbing her face.

Andy smirked and Lavinia and shoveled a large fork full of lemon and sugar covered pancakes into her mouth.

"So we were thinking..." started Sam all expressive hands and big eyes as usual.

"I'll stop you right there Samuel I have to go and see the therapist so I can't do anything, not this morning." Of course, this was a lie no one needs that much therapy.

Sam and Andy looked slightly disappointed but they weren't going to argue she had just given them what they wanted she was coming to Chichester.

"But you're coming to visit us?" Said Andy

"Yes! I said didn't I?"Lavinia reached across the table and started dishing up her pancakes.

"Yeah but you said you were going to Uni and that never happened so forgive me if I believe it when I see it," said Sam.

"Fair enough," said Lavinia with a mouthful of pancakes , she was a fast mover when it came to food.

"Can you please shut your mouth when you eat," said Sam pulling a face,

Lavinia opened her mouth and showed him the contents, Sam cringed, Andy laughed, Lavinia was smug.

"Should we ask why you changed your mind?" Said Andy

"No, you probably shouldn't" said Lavinia realising that even she wasn't sure what the answer to that question was.

In all the time that Sam and Andy had been arguing, Lavinia had finished and formulated a plan of escape. She did not have an appointment with Charlie today but then she thought when did she ever have appointments, she just rocked up and he chipped in. Lavinia took one last bite of her pancakes and began heading towards the door.

"So... I can leave you guys to sort this out then, great." She said gesturing towards the cooking mess with a wave of her hand and smiled.

Sam and Andy's mouths dropped open a little as she put on her red converse, slung on a grey hoody and strolled out the door.

"I think we just got duped," said Andy taking another delicate bite of her breakfast.

"Was that my hoody?" Said Sam frowning.

"Yes Sammy I believe it was," said Andy not looking up from her plate.

"Cow and we want her to come and live with us,  why exactly?" Laughed Sam.

Andy laughed and carried on eating.

As Lavinia walked along the road she realised she wasn't really sure where she was going, anywhere to escape the mess Sam had created in the kitchen. She also knew they would want to quiz her about Chichester again so she thought it was best to avoid them for now, it wasn't like she wasn't going, she just didn't want to talk about it.

She considered going to see Charlie again but thought she might just post her letter through his door and then head in the direction of the shops.

As she walked she felt her mind and body go hot, she couldn't think or feel anything and just for a moment she couldn't see either.

Lavinia froze terrified by the temporary darkness, but it didn't stay dark for long, she was quickly flooded by pictures that she couldn't quite grasp a hold of. She knew the pictures were memories of the inside Marxby Manor, she had to stop walking while the vision unfolded in front of her eyes.

Lavinia, or rather Dolly was looking at Lady Fay who looked eighteen maybe, then her, Lavinia's mind and body went hot and flashed again. Lavinia moved forward and found a lamp post to hold onto, she gripped it tightly wrapping her arms around it, almost hugging it but it balanced her and that's all that mattered.

As the second flash began somehow she knew it was the same day, she saw herself screaming at Lady Percy, they were standing in the door way of her old bedroom in Marxby Manor. Lavinia knew by the look of the house and the age of Fay and Percy that this day was years after she was married, towards the end of the war, she guessed that she had been about twenty-six when the argument had taken place.

"How could you have done this, after all I've done for you," screamed Lady Percy her eyes were blazing and hot with fire.

Dolly closed her bedroom door quickly and silently.

"After all you have done for me" whispered Dolly.

Lavinia played the words over and over on her mind but she could not place them in any real context she couldn't remember the day or what any of it even meant. She felt so stupid for forgetting something so significant as her own life, as she opened her eyes and the blackness faded she realised she was standing outside an off-licence still clung to a lamp post.

She didn't know what it was that made her go in and buy a bottle of vodka, but it was her struggles to place her memories and her isolation and loneliness that made her take the first sip.

"I want to go home," Lavinia said as she took another large swig from the bottle.

It was surprising how many people didn't care about a drunken teenager swigging from a vodka bottle walking up the high street alone, but the reality was nobody cared. So Lavinia managed to make it reasonably close to Charlie's office without any trouble. Originally she had no intention of going there but in her drunken haze, his building seemed more sensible (and close) than home. Then her phone rang. It was Charlie he wanted to talk about the letter.

The name Charlie appeared on her phone, she just about managed to answer.

"Yo Doctor C" said Lavinia she flailed about all long limbs and red hair.

"Err, hello Lavinia, are you alright?" Said Charlie, he immediately knew she was drunk, Doctor Franklyn referred to himself as Doctor F when he's drunk, Charlie cringed as their many drunken nights together flashed quickly through his mind.

"I'm good, I'm good Doctor C, what's up, what's going down?" Said Lavinia who actually moved down hitting the floor with a small thud.

"Lavinia are you drunk?" He knew the answer but thought it best to ask all the same.

"I imagine that is the case, yes." Said Lavinia

Charlie let out a large breath.

"Where are you?" Charlie rubbed his forehead slightly exasperated.

"Well I was supposed to be at your house, well not your house but you know, your rum palace but I seem to be elsewhere, yes that is where I am, I am elsewhere." Said Lavinia

"What do you see, describe to me what you can see," said Charlie.

"It's quite strange actually Charles I can see a big yellow vehicle of some description I don't know which. I don't like cars they frighten me so I try not to learn their names," Said Lavinia.

"Alright Lavinia I think I know where you are I'm coming to get you"

"I'm going to be sick," said Lavinia and then the line went dead.

"Hello? Lavinia, Lavinia? Oh shit." Charlie put down the phone.
