Marxby Beach Present Day

Charlie looked as Lavinia and her red curls disappeared behind the corner of the cliff "Lavinia, wait!" he cried.

Why hadn't he kissed her?

What was it that stopped him?

As he lost sight of Lavinia he felt his feet chasing after, like he wasn't even in control anymore but it was his body making all the decisions now.

"Lavinia, slow down come back," he could see the back of her heels as she ran from him.

Suddenly she turned, he hadn't noticed it before, the white chiffon scarf she was wearing was blowing in the wind and seemed to engulf her.

"What is it Charlie, why can't you let me run off humiliated in peace?"

"Sorry," he rasped finally catching up to her.

The rain was pouring down onto them down Charlie couldn't see through his glasses and Lavinia was dripping, he just stood and watched as the rain down her fair, freckled skin knowing he should say something.

"The women in my life, they seem to die, my mother and  my sister June then Alice. Then there is you, this beautiful vibrant funny girl, you who brought me back to life,"Charlie smiled sadly.

Lavinia walked towards him and held him on the upper arms in reassurance.

"I don't understand the problem..." said Lavinia.

Charlie let out a desperate laugh.

"Don't you? Lavinia the closer we get to each other, the more I get this feeling, this aching pain in my chest telling me, no, stay away from her, she is only going to leave you in the end. That girl she can never really be yours."

Lavinia moved closer to him, they were both completely drench, Charlie's white shirt was completely see through and Lavinia scarf seemed to be wrapping around them both, floating on the vigorous wind.

"So?" Said Lavinia

Charlie frowned.

"Do you need to be the one who owns my heart? Do you need to the one who owns my soul? Or can you just love me, Charlie?" She said.

Charlie looked at her eyes full of tears and longing for him but not just him and he knew it. Somewhere in the back of his head where all our worst fears and secrets are kept Charlie kept hearing the same name over and over again.

Will.

Will.

Will.

Will.

Will.

Charlie ignored the voice and his jealous pang, he ignored the fact he would never own Lavinia's heart  instead, he just kissed her there on Marxby beach with the waves almost touching their feet.

He pulled her body towards him and felt her respond with her arms wrapped around his neck tightly and she moved her body close to him. Charlie couldn't help himself, he picked Lavinia up by her thighs and he let out a moan when her legs tightened around his waist and finally giving into temptation he carried her into the rough and raging waves.

"I love you," said Charlie as the waves carried out to sea.

"I know," Lavinia replied.

They delved further into the crashing waves Charlie stopped carrying Lavinia out to sea, he didn't need to, the waves were doing it for him. They were engulfed in the angry grey depths of the ocean it had taken them completely into its rise and fall.

Lavinia's arms and legs were wrapped around Charlie for a moment she thought she would think of nothing again, nothing but this moment with him in the waves nothing but her lips on his tanned, soft neck but then it happened she looked up. Lavinia looked up and suddenly she wasn't Charlie's Lavinia, the girl on the beach but she was herself again and it didn't matter that she was wrapped around Charlie and he was kissing her, loving her, it wasn't enough, it would never be enough. Lavinia looked up and saw Marxby Manor and the cliff that is rested upon, it was white and glorious but somehow foreboding.

The waves had carried them away from their original position on the beach and along slightly towards the other side of the cliff where there was no beach, no sad, only rocks and water that thrashed upon the cliff face.

Lavinia felt her arms let go of Charlie.

She hung from his hips in the water and just starred at the cliff and back at Charlie and out to the ocean.

"What is it?" Said Charlie. Seeing she had gone deathly pale.

The waves were getting out of control now; in fact, they made Charlie a strong swimmer a little nervous.

"Lavinia maybe we should go back to shaw," he said.

Lavinia wasn't listening she was just starring at The Manor and the cliff and then the water that surrounded that cliff face.

"Lavinia, Lavinia?" Charlie tried to shake her back to life but he didn't get a response instead, she separated her body from his and swam towards the cliff. Charlie tried to swim after her but the current was pushing him the other way.

Lavinia looked again at the Manor, the cliff and the rocky ocean and began to scream not any scream but a blood-curdling scream that ripped through Charlie's insides burning that sound to his memory.

She thrashed about in the water like she was trying to swim away but couldn't, instead she stayed in the same position opposite that cliff face, screaming and thrashing her body and turning a deathly pale white.

"Charlie..." Lavinia screamed.

Charlie didn't respond.

"Charlie, this is where I died, I can feel it, I can feel myself drowning. The air leaving my body, no hope, no fight left in me, no hope of rescue, why can't I remember how it happened? Charlie?

Charlie?"

Lavinia turned for an answer but Charlie was gone the waves had swallowed him whole.

"Charlie?" Lavinia span around in the grey water looking for something any sign of Charlie but there was nothing.

"Please don't do this to me, not here," she cried.

Lavinia was living the last moments of her life over and over again, the last breaths Dolly would ever take, were coming back to her, the last time she opened her eyes all she saw was the very depths of this ocean.

But how she got in the water, still remained a mystery, Lavinia blocked it out, pushed it somewhere far to the back of her brain has she plummeted her body under the water and searched for Charlie.

She saw nothing, nothing but murky grey until she didn't until she saw Charlie's hand floating in the ocean reaching out, begging to be pulled back to the surface but in the same way he was floating like a dead thing.

Lavinia swam with him, swam on her back and pulled his body through those angry waves and away from that cliff face. She pulled Charlie with every bit of strength in her, Lavinia heaved him onto the beach soaking wet and aching from the fight with his body and the waves.

He wasn't moving.

He wasn't breathing.

He was dead.
