The Gregory house- Present Day
Anna was pacing up and down the kitchen, pushing her fringe away from her face as she walked. Her mobile was in one hand and the house phone the other George just looked on. Lavinia had been missing for two days, she had done some stupid stuff but never gone missing.
They had been to Doctor Charlton's office and his home he was also gone, the thought that they were missing together didn't make Anna or George feel any better. What if something had happened? What if he had done something to her?
"Where is she George?" George didn't say anything it was the same question Anna had been throwing at him for the past two days. Because they suspected Lavinia was with Doctor Charlton they had held off calling the police for one more day, they had twelve hours, twelve hours and George had promised he would let Anna call the authorities.
The front door swung open it wasn't Lavinia but Andy and Sam they ran to their mother and then to their father. "What's happened?" Said Andy "Where is she?" Said Sam. Anna spun round, looking at George her eyes begging him, pleading with him to allow her to call the police.
"Twelve hours," he said.
Marxby Manor- 1915
It had been difficult of Lady Fay, first Jimmy left then Dolly followed him. She didn't begrudge her sister going, she was proud of her for it, she would have followed her if she could but Fay was only fourteen, nowhere near old enough to volunteer to be a VAD or to do anything useful. She longed to be in France with her sister, as close to Jimmy as she could get, instead she was stuck at the Manor with Percy, Sarah and her mother.
Everyday she missed Dolly more and more, the sound of her laugh, the way they would talk together, tell each other anything the way they were bonded, even at such a young age Fay knew she could never have that with anyone else, it was unique what she shared with Jimmy and Dolly.
The morning light seemed to swim of over Marxby Manor Fay thought the sun seemed to be mocking her, how dare it be such a bright and sunny day when Jimmy and Dolly were so far away.
Fay gazed out the window with such sadness in her eyes, she knew she was feeling sorry for herself but Fay decided feeling sad and lonely for one morning really wasn't the worst crime in the world.
As she wiped away her tears and decided to pull herself together Fay heard foot steps behind her she turned her head and saw Percy sauntering down the stairs.
Percy walked with a swing in her hips and a smirk on her face "aww," she laughed cruelly.
"What's the matter Little Bit?"
"Don't call me that," said Fay turning towards Percy.
"Why? Because I'm not Jimmy, the white knight or your beloved Dolly, loved by you perhaps but what wasted love that is," Percy was still laughing, she was like an ebony goddess with her black eyes and silky black hair, sent only to hurt her little sister.
"Why say these things Percy, what be so cruel?" Fay tried to push the tears back into her eyes.
Percy laughed again at her little sister.
"I'm not cruel little sister, I tell you only what is real, only the truth. Dolly she is an evil thing, not loving the man who puts her before everything else in the world. Shaming him with that white feather, send him to war..."Percy trailed off her black eyes devilish and raging.
"I don't think that's how it was Percy..." Fay started.
"And what would you know of love?" Spat Percy.
Fay's eyes went glassy and cold as she looked at her sister standing on the stair case above her.
"Same as you I would imagine," said Fay and for the first time in their lives Percy wondered if there was more to her little sister than she had first imagined.
The Beach- Marxby Manor- Present Day
Charlie and Lavinia woke up on the beach, they didn't know what time it was but assumed it was early by the feel of the air and not yet completely awakened sky. Lavina was lying on top of Charlie and in that moment between waking and dreaming she knew, she knew she was with Charlie, her safe place, the safest place she new.
She knew she could feel his chest rising and falling beneath her and she could feel the wet sand under their bodies and the crackle of the breaking waves but it was more than that the place between awake and dreaming was coated with something else, a warning, a calling she couldn't tell which.
She wanted to open her eyes, open her eyes and become part if the world again but she couldn't, not till she heard what they had to say, these people living on the cusp of her dreams.
"Follow the Sunflowers," cried a woman's voice desperate, longing to be heard. But Lavinia didn't want to hear so she snapped open her eyes and became part of the world once more.
As she woke Charlie's eyes were just beginning to flutter, he smiled at her it was a sad smile she knew that but she also knew she wasn't going to walk into the sea again what would be the point, there was no going back, there was no going home not really.
As Charlie sat up he brushed her hair with his fingers and smiled.
"Shall we go back?" He said
Lavinia didn't reply instead she leaned towards him took off his glasses and kissed him.
His eyes shot opened in surprise "Lavinia, what are you doing?"
"Living," she replied.
